Bats at Old Tunnel State Park: Visit Fredericksburg TX
Hi , Daryl Whitworth here at the Bat Tunnel State Park just south of Fredericksburg, Texas. This old abandoned railroad tunnel is home to millions of Mexican free-tailed bats during the summer months.
The tunnel was originally constructed in 1913 as part of a railroad spur from San Antonio to Fredericksburg, Texas. It was abandoned in 1941 and the bats began to make it their summer home soon after that.
Some people refer to it as the Fredericksburg bat cave. But unlike other bat caves in the Texas Hill Country, the tunnel is open on both ends.
The bats return to the Texas Hill Country in late spring, typically around May and make their home in the tunnel until around October. They usually emerge about an hour or so before sunset, but that can vary by an hour or more each evening. It is always best to call ahead for the current emergence time.
The bat tunnel is located about 10 miles south of Fredericksburg on the Old San Antonio Road. There is a parking area and both upper and lower viewing decks.
The upper viewing deck is open nightly at no charge. The lower viewing area is open on Thursday through Sunday evenings for special educational presentations and the fee for the lower viewing area is $5 per person regardless of age. Seating is first come, first served and is limited to 70 visitors.
Many of the bats emerge from the south end of the tunnel and have to circle counter-clockwise to gain enough altitude to get above the trees that have grown up at the end of the cave. They then stream towards the river to get water before they leave on their nightly hunt.
One of the things I think is kind of neat is that you often will see hawks perched in the trees south of the tunnel. They are there to try to catch an evening meal for themselves.

Real life bat tornado! - Old Tunnel State Park in Fredricksburg, Tx
What an incredible experience!
We took a two hour drive to watch about 500 thousand bats emerging out of a tunnel that once used to be a railway. You felt the cool breeze as they made a bat-nado leaving the tunnel ready to hunt for some bugs to eat!!!

Fredericksburg Texas Bats 2
The Old Tunnel Wildlife Management Area is the smallest Wildlife Management Area in Texas, containing only 16.1 acres of land.
The abandoned railroad tunnel is home to up to three million Brazilian free-tailed bats (T. b. mexicana) and 3,000 Cave myotis (Myotis velifer) from April to October, more mammals than any other WMA.
From May to October, visitors come to watch the bats emerge from the tunnel each night, and nightly educational programs provide guests with a better understanding of the life history and ecology of bats. In July and August there are over three million Mexican Free-tailed bats (Tadarida brasiliensis) and 1,000-3,000 Cave Myotis (Myotis velifer) in Old Tunnel.
The Mexican Free-tailed bat is a medium-sized bat, weighing about 12-15 grams (12 paperclips). The title Mexican is added to their name because they migrate to Mexico in the winter months. Old Tunnel bats usually leave the tunnel in late October, and fly to Mexico. During this migration, they can fly at altitudes of 10,000 feet and speeds of 60 mph.
On summer nights, the Old Tunnel bats usually emerge within an hour before or after sunset. Most bats exit through the south end of the tunnel, spiraling in a counter-clockwise direction in order to gain altitude over nearby trees.

A Return Home
The official state fish, the Guadalupe Bass, has been restored to the South Llano River. Threatened by loss of habitat and hybridization with non-native, introduced Smallmouth Bass, the Guadalupe Bass was close to being wiped out. We’ll learn what happened and how biologists figured out how to restore the Texas native back to the South Llano River.
Goliad Illumination
Once a year, visitors to Goliad State Park & Historic Site can witness what is known as “The Illumination.” The Franciscan missionaries designed Mission Espiritu Santo so that on April 16th, the setting sun would shine through a window on the west end of the building, and illuminate the crucifix in the east end of the chapel.
Austin’s Warblers
In the heart of the hill country is the Balcones Canyonlands Preserve, and here you will find the endangered Golden-cheeked Warbler. Join some biologists as they monitor these unique birds during their nesting season.

National Museum of the Pacific War: Visit Fredericksburg TX
Originally named the Admiral Nimitz Museum and housed in the historic Nimitz Steamboat Hotel on Main Street in Fredericksburg, the National Museum of the Pacific War has grown into a six-acre campus with more than 50,000 square feet of exhibit space.
Today, the museum includes exhibits on the life and career of Fleet Admiral Chester W. Nimitz, who commanded U.S. and allied naval forces in the Pacific War, and who was born right here in Fredericksburg.
It also includes displays of Allied and Japanese aircraft, tanks, guns, other artifacts and, the most moving of all, the personal stories of our troops.
On scheduled weekends throughout the year, the Pacific Combat Zone is the site of a living history program. Re-enactors bring World War II to life by demonstrating the weapons and discussing the tactics and strategy that won the war.
The grounds also include a Memorial Courtyard, a Plaza of Presidents and a Japanese Garden of Peace.
All museum properties are accessible by wheelchair, and group tours and school groups are welcome. Tickets are good for 48 hours.
Come visit the only institution in the continental United States dedicated exclusively to telling the story of the Pacific Theater battles of World War II. The Wall Street Journal said, A museum of this quality—and importance—needs to be seen...

Enchanted Rock: Visit Fredericksburg TX
Hi, Daryl Whitworth here at one of my favorite places in the Texas Hill Country -- Enchanted Rock.
I used to come here as a kid 30 years ago and now I often bring my kids here to hike and enjoy this beautiful part of the Hill Country. This is one of the best places in Central Texas for hiking and rock climbing.
Enchanted Rock is a huge, pink granite dome, that covers over a square mile. It is the second largest granite outcropping (batholith-underground rock formation uncovered by erosion) in the United States.
The Enchanted Rock State Natural Area is located 18 miles north of Fredericksburg on Ranch Road 965.
It is known as Enchanted Rock because the Native Americans in the area believed it was haunted due the noises made by the granite; plus the rock will glisten in the moonlight.
Things to do:
• Hiking
• Technical Rock climbing
• Primitive Camping
• Geological study
• Bird and wildlife watching
• Star gazing (minimal light pollution)
Enchanted Rock is pet-friendly, but pets must be on a leash.
During peak seasons (March to June and October to December), the park may reach parking capacity, requiring the park to temporarily close on weekends (sometimes as early as 11 a.m.). The park will reopen when sufficient parking is available.
The park is open 7 days a week year-round from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m.
And admission is: $6 adults; children 12 and younger are admitted free.

FREDERICKSBURG, TEXAS- VLOG DAY 1
The last weekend of July, my grandmother, mother, cousin, 2nd cousin, and I drove down to Fredericksburg, Texas. Fredericksburg is an old German town with a bunch of cute shops, restaurants, and different activities to do.
When we arrived we stopped at Wheeler's, a German/American restaurant for lunch. Then we went to find the rental house we were staying at, Das Fritz House. Bed and breakfasts are very popular in this town. After that we went to some of the shops, Dooley's and The Christmas Store. We ended the night with dinner at an Italian restaurant, Pasta Bella.
A Historical Walk Through Fredericksburg, Texas
Fredericksburg is a very historic city located in the scenic Texas Hill Country. Known for its German heritage, it is a great travel destination from both Austin and San Antonio. Starting off at Marktplatz where the reconstruction of the Vereins Kirche is located, I take a walk along Main St (US 290) checking out the historic buildings in downtown from the former Nimitz Hotel to the Pioneer Museum. Unfortunately the Pioneer Museum was closed the day I went, but it is definitely worth admiring the beautiful buildings outdoors! I complete my stay in Fredericksburg by visiting the Der Stadt Friedhof cemetery.
