Wŏnsan (Korean pronunciation: [wʌn.san]) is a port city and naval base located in Kangwŏn Province, North Korea, along the eastern side of the Korean Peninsula, on the Sea of Japan (East Sea) and the provincial capital. The port was opened by occupying Japanese forces in 1880. Before the 1950–1953 Korean War, it fell within the jurisdiction of the then South Hamgyŏng province, and during the war it was the location of the Blockade of Wŏnsan. The population of the city was estimated at 331,000 in 2000.[needs update] Notable people from Wŏnsan include Kim Ki Nam, diplomat and Secretary of the Korean Workers' Party. The city has several major factories.

Wonsan has also been known as Yonghunghang, Yuan shan in China, Genzan or Gensan in Japan, and Port Lazareva or Port Lazareff in Russia.
Geography[edit]
Wonsan, on the East Coast of North Korea, opposite Pyongyang
Wŏnsan's area is 269 square kilometres (104 sq mi). It is located in Kangwŏn Province, on the westernmost part of the Sea of Japan (East Sea of Korea) and the east end of the Korean peninsula's neck. Mt. Changdok (Changdok-san) and Mt. Nap'al (Nap'al-san) are located to the west of the city. More than 20 small islands flank Wŏnsan's immediate coastal area, including Hwangt'o Island and Ryŏ Island. Wŏnsan is considered an excellent natural port location. Kŭmgang-san mountain is located near Wŏnsan.

Wŏnsan serves as the administrative centre of Kangwŏn Province.

North Korea VS. South Korea (They're Totally Different!)
In 1945, Korea was divided into South Korea and North Korea. Despite the fact that communist North Korea and democratic South Korea are neighbors, the life in these 2 countries is totally different.
Photographer Ed Jones decided to capture it and show to the rest of the world. In the photos you can see that clothes, interiors, and environments are more modern in South Korea. But the soul of these people is definitely the same.

Wonsan

A new North Korean shopping experience
(1 Sep 2019) In North Korea there's a new shopping experience.
The Daesong Department Store reopened in April this year after two years of renovation work.
People really do go there and spend money, it's not just a showpiece. But as usual, it's difficult to understand how this way of shopping works within North Korea's developing economy and traditional socialist policies.
Sunday morning and shoppers start to fill up the supermarket on the ground floor of the Daesong Department Store.
For security, customers have to put their own bags in lockers or sealed them inside tamper-proof bags provided by the shop.
By around 11am it starts to get busy.
This is not a show put on for visiting foreigners.
Over the past few months since it reopened in April this year, repeated visits with and without cameras shows the crowds are similar.
Originally opened in the 1980s, this department store used to be dark and dingy, with few customers, local or foreign.
Then in 2017, it was closed for renovation, and reopened on 15 April this year - the anniversary of the birth of Kim Il Sung, who is still officially revered in North Korea as the founder of the nation.
It's now bright and popular. The supermarket offers lots of North Korean snacks and ingredients, and even a bakery with little ready-made pizzas, as well as more traditional Korean-style foods and sliced bread.
This is the third big department store to have a makeover in Pyongyang in the past few years.
The first was the Kwangbok Department Store, in another suburb, which was renovated with Chinese investment starting 2011.
Then the Station Department Store near Pyongyang's main railway terminus was renovated too.
Common to all three, is a new style of goods and service.
The food supermarket has a wider variety of goods which people actually want to buy, and they can buy these with the local currency, the North Korean Won.
The supermarket check-out a familiar sight in most countries is still a novelty in North Korea.
In most other stores shoppers first choose items at a counter, then they receive a slip from a salesperson, before going onto another counter to pay and finally returning to the original counter with the slip to pick up their items.
Strolling the aisles and filling your trolley before going to straight to the check-out is an alien experience for most North Koreans.
At the Daesong Department Store, customer Han Su Hyang says she appreciates this way of shopping.
At the Daesong Department Store, I feel that buying things and paying for them is very convenient. The customers can choose whatever they want, without having to get a slip, and directly pay and go, it's really easy, she says.
Venture upstairs and you'll discover pricier clothes, big screen TVs, toys and household goods, there are still quite a few shoppers here too.
But if you go one floor higher to the luxury goods section with its signs for Chanel and Rolex, there are very few people around.
At best, it's window shopping here.
The Deputy Manager of the Daesong Department Store says that they tried to overhaul the old shop to make it more relevant to the local customers.
The demand here is for food and everyday items, and people with money to buy.
The main objective of the old department store was to cater to foreigners. Now the new department store has become a big place for everybody to shop. We've tripled what we can do, including in the variety of products that we can offer, says Deputy Manager Pak Chol Jin.

Taedong River Competition

Youth and students in Pyongyang held a Taedong River crossing competition on Friday on the occasion of the 54th anniversary of the Day of Songun.
It brought together more than 1 100 boys and girls selected from universities and schools in districts and counties of the city.
After the kick-off ceremony was held on the bank of the River Taedong in front of Kim Il Sung Square, students of Changgwang Senior Secondary School and Songyo District Namsin Primary School made a demonstration crossing the river.
Then followed a river crossing competition.
School youth and children and citizens applauded the students crossing the river, displaying high swimming technique, strong willpower and team spirit.
Pyongyang University of Printing and Tongdaewon District place first in the competition.

True face of North Korean army revealed in smuggled photos
The true face of Kim Jong-un's army has been revealed in pictures smuggled out of North Korea showing ancient wood-powered trucks and exhausted soldiers asleep on the roadside.In the photos, taken by a tourist between Mount Kumgang and the port city of Wonsan on North Korea's east coast, Kim Jong-un's troops are seen laboring over broken trucks.One photo shows a female soldier on duty in high heels, while another shows at least 14 men crammed onto a vehicle that seats six.Some trucks even appear to be powered by wood gas generators – a technology not commonplace in Europe since the end of the Second World War.The photographer, who asked not to be identified, said the few soldiers he saw appeared unready for action – even at the South Korean border.'We didn't see many soldiers apart from what you see in my pictures,' he said. 'And no-one looked combat-ready.'At DMZ there were of course soldiers but those we saw were all 'guides' in one way or another.'North Korea is famously strict about photography and visitors often have their pictures deleted by their chaperons.However these pictures were taken on a camera with two memory card bays, meaning any photos deleted would be backed up.But the photographer did not need to worry – he says his guides were 'very liberal' and his cache of photos was not even inspected once.'I read a lot on the internet about the guides looking through your camera every day and even some times when you leave the country,' he recalled.'So I bought a camera with twin memory card bays, so even if I had to delete a picture I had one left.but my guides were very liberal and never inspected my photos. 'Experts say North Korea's army is significantly less capable than that of neighboring South Korea, but that Kim's forces are not to be underestimated.Malcolm Chalmers, who advised foreign secretaries Jack Straw and Margaret Beckett, said Northern troops could wage guerrilla warfare.He said: 'Fundamentally the North Korean conventional military capability is much weaker than that of South Korea and the US.'They have very little in the way of air power and air defense capabilities. They exist, but again, they're not very powerful.'But once they hide out in the cities and the countryside and wait to do damage for invading forces, I think it could create quite a lot of difficulty.'The photos were shot en-route to Mount Kumgang and the port city of Wonsan on North Korea's east coast, the city of Nampo on the west coast and in the capital Pyongyang.
