Oldenburg is a city in northwest Germany. The central Horst-Janssen-Museum displays works by the 20th-century artist, including lithographs and drawings. The State Museum for Nature and Man has exhibits exploring the region's natural history, plus an aquarium. Oldenburg Castle houses part of the State Museum for Art and Cultural History, which showcases regional artifacts and European paintings.
An former royal seat in Lower Saxony, Oldenburg has a legacy left by generations of counts, dukes and grand dukes. Studying Oldenburg’s aristocratic history can be tricky as the House of Oldenburg had German, Danish and Russian branches.
Just to illustrate, the future Russian Tsar Alexander II lived at Oldenburg’s Prinzepalais for a time in the 19th century. The tremendous art collections of the Grand Dukes of Oldenburg awaits you across three resplendent properties. Keep the palace garden and stunning opera house in mind, and catch up with Oldenburg’s past at engrossing museums and old landmarks like the “Lappan” belfry.
The tallest building in the city, the Lutheran St Lambert’s Church has five towers, the highest of which measures 86 metres above the western facade. The multitalented 20th-century artist Horst Janssen grew up in Oldenburg and lived here most of his life, becoming an honorary citizen in 1992. The dedicated museum opened in a purpose-built edifice in 2000 and gives you a timeline of his career and shows the many different mediums he used for his art: There are watercolours, posters, etchings, drawings and lithographies.
When the land Grand Duke of Oldenburg abdicated in 1919, the Duchy’s art collections and valuable ensembles of decorative arts were made available to the public. Oldenburg’s first art museum goes back 1867, making it one of the oldest purpose-built museum buildings in North Germany.
Dating to 1826, the Prinzepalais was the residence for the Russian princes Peter and Alexander. In 16 hectares, the grounds of Oldenburg Palace push out to the south of the city’s historical centre. The garden is in the English landscape style and in 2014 celebrated its 200th anniversary. With a deceptive, modern lobby next to the Horst-Janssen-Museum, Oldenburg’s municipal museum is actually an ensemble of three interconnected historic villas.
The tower is from the 1460s and was actually the bell-tower of a church and hospital that became defunct during the Reformation and were lost in the city fire in 1676. The Lappan meanwhile was secularised and became a habitable watchtower, while its current Baroque dome was added in 1709. All bus lines running through the centre of Oldenburg stop in front of this popular landmark, which now contains a travel agency.
The last Burgher house to be found in Oldenburg also came through the fire of 1676 undamaged. The Degodehaus is at Markt 24 a little way from the town hall, and is an early-16th-century residential house. In 3.7 hectares on Philosophenweg to the northwest of the city lies the botanical garden, maintained by the University of Oldenburg.
Landesmuseum für Natur und Mensch was born back in 1835 when Augustus, Grand Duke of Oldenburg purchased a compendium of insect and bird specimens. On the southern side of the Lambertikirche is the last remaining vestige of Oldenburg’s city defences. This powder magazine dates from the final expansion of the fortifications in the 1500s, and at first would have been used as a watchtower when it had a conical roof. This splendid Historicist theatre is a big institution in Oldenburg, employing 450 people and attracting 200,000 spectators each year.
On Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays there’s a fresh produce market at Markt between the town hall and the Lamberikirche. Minutes west of Oldenburg is a sophisticated resort on the south shore of the Zwischenahner Meer. This 550-hectare lake has been drawing holidaymakers for its water sports and healthy air since the mid-19th century.

Der Schweizer Choreograf und Ballettdirektor Martin Schläpfer ist hochgeehrt und mehrfach ausgezeichnet. Die Fachzeitschrift tanz kürte ihn 2010 zum „Choreografen des Jahres, seine Compagnie, das Ballett am Rhein Düsseldorf/Duisburg, gleich dreimal hintereinander in den Jahren 2013, 2014 und 2015 zur „Besten Kompanie. Bevor Martin Schläpfer 2009/10 die Düsseldorfer Compagnie übernahm, leitete er 10 Jahre lang das von ihm neuformierte ballettmainz und führte es in die erste Reihe der deutschen Ballettcompagnien. Gemeinsam mit seinem ehemaligen Tänzer, dem Chefchoreografen Antoine Jully, wird er exklusiv am Oldenburgischen Staatstheater einen Abend mit vier Balletten gestalten.
Der Franzose Antoine Jully tanzte an der Pariser Oper, dem Royal Ballet London und beim Ballet d’ Europe in Marseille, bevor er sich 2005 dem ballettmainz und Martin Schläpfer anschloss. Ihm folgte er von 2009 bis 2014 an das Ballett am Rhein. Choreografiert hat Antoine Jully bereits am Ballet d’Europe und auch äußerst erfolgreich in Düsseldorf. 2014/15 wurde er zum Oldenburger Chefchoreografen berufen.
Der Abend mit vier Balletten zeigt, was Martin Schläpfer und Antoine Jully neben ihrer biografisch-beruflichen Begegnung verbindet: das Interesse an der puren Bewegung, an Innovation und der Versuch, mit dem „Körper zu musizieren. Beide entwickeln ihre Arbeiten in den Proben mit und an den Tänzerinnen und Tänzern. Weitere gemeinsame Oldenburger Abende, auch Kreationen Martin Schläpfers mit der BallettCompagnie Oldenburg, sind für die kommenden Spielzeiten angedacht.
,Concertante‘ ist eine Kreation Jullys zur gleichnamigen Musik des bedeutenden ungarischen Komponisten György Kurtág (geb. 1926). György Kurtág gilt heute neben György Ligeti (1923 — 2006) als der bedeutendste ungarische Komponist nach 1945. Die Musik Kurtágs ist geprägt von einer Verdichtung musikalischer Texturen, seine Sprache ist spielerisch und assoziativ.
So wie eine Komposition mehr ist als zufälliges Geklimper, so ist eine geführte Konversation auch mehr als ein Smalltalk oder ein Geplapper. Beide folgen einer geheimen Dramaturgie und reagieren, nicht nur absichtsvoll, auf das Gegenüber. In ,Concertante‘ zeigt Antoine Jully, dass Tanz ein abstraktes Gespräch zwischen Körpern, Musik und Publikum sein kann.
Das Solo ,Ramifications‘ (Verästelungen), aus dem Jahre 2005, kreierte Martin Schläpfer für die Tänzerin Marlúcia do Amaral. Schläpfer erforscht zu György Ligetis gleichnamiger Komposition Bewegung und Raum zwischen gegensätzlichen Polen: klar und vage, stehend und bewegend, flach und tief, beschränkt und weit, hart und weich, dicht und durchlässig. Bekanntes erscheint als Fremdes, Entfremdetes — und umgekehrt. Tänzerin und Musik suchen einander und brechen gegeneinander aus.
Schläpfers Pas de deux ,Quartz‘ aus dem Jahre 2008 ist eine Rarität. Eine Tänzerin – in Gedanken versunken? Gebrochen? Verträumt schlendernd? In jedem Fall scheint sie völlig nach innen gewandt und sich selbst genügend. Tanzend entwirft sie ihre Welt, nimmt zunächst ihren Körper bewusst wahr, tastet ihre Gelenke ab. Mitten in diese Versunkenheit tritt ein Mann, und von Beginn an ist klar, dass sein Versuch, in diesen Kosmos einzudringen, scheitern wird. „Die dunkle Großstadt-Etüde der Vereinsamung endet mit einer Art Verpuppung, Mechanisierung der beiden Einzelgänger, schreibt Angela Reinhardt über das Ende der Choreografie zu Marianne Faithfulls namensgebendem Song ,City of Quartz‘.
Ein ähnliches Thema, das Zusammenleben von Menschen in der Urbanität, hat auch Antoine Jully für seine Kreation ,Begegnen ohne sich zu sehen‘ zu Carl Philipp Emanuel Bachs 1. und 2. Sinfonie gewählt.

Und alle sind sie gekommen zum alljährlichen Tag des Opfers: Der nervöse Märzhase und der verrückte Hutmacher, Dideldum und Dideldei, Humpty Dumpty und die mysteriöse Grinsekatze. Sie alle wollen an dem Spektakel teilhaben, bei dem jedes Jahr dem großen Jabberwocky ein Sünder geopfert wird, auf dass der große Jabberwocky die Wunderlande auf ein weiteres Jahr beschützen werde. Hierzu wie immer: Musik, Tanz und Gesang. Doch dieses Jahr läuft alles, wirklich alles anders ...
„Alice im Wunderland: L-S-Dreamland“ ist eine Mixtur aus Volksfest und Theater, Ritual und Sportevent – und vor allem ein großes, surreales Spektakel zu Land, zu Wasser und in der Luft. Präsentiert von den Müttern und Vätern der Erfolgsproduktionen „Dracula und „Titanic, eigens konzipiert für den Uferpalast am Theaterhafen.
Ganz gewiss kein Kinderstück, aber auf jeden Fall ein Stück, an dem auch Kinder ihren Spaß haben werden.

Hardmoves Superfinale 2016
Am Samstag, den 5. März, fand in der Schwimmoper in Wuppertal das Superfinale der Hardmoves 2016 statt. In die Schwimmhalle wurden auf Pontons 7 Meter hohe Boulderwände errichtet. Zusätzlich war in dem Becken ein Trampolin versenkt worden, um bei den Fällen aus der großen Höhe auf jeden Fall für die nötige Sicherheit zu sorgen. Die Stimmung unter den 750 Zuschauern war phantastisch.
