Mangetsuji Temple with famous Ukimido (Floating Temple) Hall, Katata Ward, Shiga Prefecture
Mangetsuji Temple is a zen temple located in Katata Ward of Shiga Prefecture (Kansai Region) in Japan. Mangetsuji Temple is known for the Ukimido Hall which is built on the shores of lake Biwa (Biwa-ko) on the water. When the water is full this hall seems like floating on the water.
Mangetsuji is a small temple but the gorgeous views of the Lake Biwa and it's surroundings makes it a very popular temple to visit in Shiga Prefecture. The Ukimido is said to house about 1000 Amida Buddha statues in a small space.
The beautiful views of Shiga Prefecture and Lake Biwa, were subject to eight paintings to the famous Ukiyo-e Painter of Japan, Hiroshige. These paintings are known as Eights Views of Omi. Omi being the ancient name for Shiga Prefecture. One of the paints features the Geese returning home on Lake Biwa with the Ukimido Hall in the background. It is a beautiful painting along with the other seven views of Omi.
Omi Jingu Shrine Yabusame Horseback Archery 近江神宮流鏑馬神事
Omi Shrine Yabusame Horseback Archery held in Otsu, Shiga Prefecture, Japan. It is a religious ceremony praying for peace and rich harvests. The mounted archers are from the Takeda School of Archery based in Kamakura, Kanagawa. It is held on the first Sunday in June. (During 1990-2014, it was held every Nov. 3.) This video was taken on Nov. 3, 2013.
Omi Jingu (Shrine) is a major Shinto shrine in Shiga Prefecture. Dedicated to Emperor Tenchi (626-672) who moved Japan's Imperial Capital from Asuka, Nara to Otsu in 667, in the area of Omi Shrine. The capital was moved back to Asuka 5 years later.

I spent the day at the beautiful Midera shrine complex in Otsu City, the capital of Shiga. It's a short train ride from Kyoto and Midera is worth it.

It is known as the sacred place of Karuta (playing card).

Biwako means Lake Biwa, which is Japan's largest lake ensconced in the middle of Shiga prefecture. Biwako Hall by the lake is probably Japan's best venue for opera performances. The view from the foyer is almost like that of Helsinki. Giuseppe Verdi's _Aida_ would be performed on this venue in less than three hours.

比叡山延暦寺の元里坊の一つ、旧竹林院に行ってきました。
2017年4月14日の訪問です。
I visited to the Kyu (Former) Chikurin-in on April 10, 2017.
Originally it was one of a Satobo of Mt. Hiei Enryakuji Temple.
Room of Genji at Ishiyama-dera （石山寺） Temple, Shiga Prefecture, Japan
Room of Genji is located next the Main Worship Hall (Hondo) in Ishiyama-dera （石山寺） Temple, Shiga Prefecture, Japan.
It is said that Lady Murasaki Shikibu wrote the famous novel of the Heian Period The Tale of Genji (Genji Monogatari) in this room under the full moon light in August, 1004.
There are conflicting theories of where Lady Murasaki actually wrote this novel, one theory says that she wrote the novel at Rozanji Temple in Kyoto City, where her residence is located. However she might have spent a month at Room of Genji at Ishiyama-dera Temple and wrote parts of the Tale of Genji here.
The large temple garden behind the main Temple, has a statue of Lady Murasaki Shikibu, which is a great sight to watch.

Jose's Japan Trip 2017 #13 - Tsuge, Otsu, Lake Biwa 柘植 大津 琵琶湖
In the next video for October 16, I leave Seki continuing to trace the route of the old Tokaido Road by train. After a quick stop in Tsuge to admire the trees and flowers outside the station building, I continue on towards Otsu and the edge of Lake Biwa (Biwako). I take the Keihan tram towards Hama-Otsu station (now called Biwako-Hamaotsu) and again brave the rainy elements on the short walk to the shoreline.
In the middle of this particular segment, I come across a statue of one of Japan's well known travelers and poets, Matsuo Basho... a fitting stop for this traveler.

The largest Japanese lake, Biwa-ko. Enryaku-ji Temple, the World Cultural Heritage, and national treasures are on the lakeshore.
The prefecture of Shiga is in the middle of Japan; Lake Biwa a.k.a Mother Lake , the largest lake in Japan, lies at its center. It is surrounded by Mt. Ibuki to the northeast, the Suzuka Mountain Range to the east, Mt. Hira-san and Mt. Hiei-zan to the west, and the Shigaraki Mountains lie to the south.
They have annual local mascots' festival called Hikone Gotochi Kyara Matsuri along the castle town of Hikone castle whose donjon is designated as a national treasure.
Also there are a number of precious heritage sites, including Hiei-zan Enryaku-ji Temple, designated as World Cultural Heritage, Hikone Castle designated as a national treasure, and many famous Buddhist images. Shiga is one of the richest areas in Japan for national treasures and important cultural properties.
You can also enjoy Shigaraki ware pottery, noted for statuettes of raccoon dogs, Otsu-e pictures with their vivid colors, and other traditional arts and crafts. Delicious food treats include traditional sushi, with fermented freshwater fish called Funa-zushi, which has been enjoyed since the 8th century; also try Omi beef to tempt your palate. Not to be missed is the Hikiyama-matsuri Festival where decorative floats parade through the city in spring.
