France: Day in Marseille exploring the old port and walking tour
Melynda's mother came over France on a visit and we spent the day in Marseille exploring the old port and taking a walking tour. I think one of the most amazing places was the Cathedral la Major. It was so vast inside and cool and calm on a hot windy day. Keep an eye out for Anders reaction to his first ride in a proper ferris wheel at 4:20 .

Marseille was the first stop in out Provence tour. We were surprised by the diversity of this place, the multi cultural vibes and the big big port. We also found Lokum, the original, exactly as we had in Istanbul, and meet three friendly sailors.

MSC Meraviglia Europe Cruise Review - Marseille
It's time for a visit to Marseille on our fantastic #MSCMeraviglia Mediterranean #Cruise. Yes, we are chilling in France. Our plans changed at the last minute! So, how'd it turn out?

Those of you who have been following along with the vlogs probably know that we booked a tour to visit Aix en Provence for this day. Well, we were informed that the excursion was cancelled. We tossed around the idea of taking to Aix the train ourselves, but in the end decided to just hop off the ship, take the MSC shuttle to the old port, and play it by ear. The vieux port has been the natural harbor of the city since antiquity and is now a hip place to hang out in #Marseille. We can see why it has become so popular. There's tons to do. One side of the street is lined with vendors selling truly unique goods. You'll get a good look at some of the things available in the video, and you just might get to see me buy something cool too. The other side of the street is pretty much back to back restaurants. All of which give off a cool I'm-in-France-chill vibe. It was really tough to decide where to eat, but we ultimately settled on a spot with good shade and a great view of the harbor. After lunch we wandered around chatting with vendors and taking in the sights. We were even lucky enough to catch a little of an awesome street performance. Catching the bus back to the #Meraviglia was super easy, and before long we were sitting in our favorite spot in the Yacht Club, the Topsail Lounge, enjoying the drink of the day, a lovely Lavender Margarita. Our evening plans included an amazing show by Cirque du Soleil, but my first commitment was fulfilling a promise to spend a little time with my son in his favorite spot on the Meraviglia.
There’s one more stop to come on this journey as we continue our European cruise to Genoa (Italy) so STAY TUNED! If you missed day 1 in Rome, day 2 in Palermo, day 3 in Malta, or our time in Barcelona be sure to check those videos out too.
DISCLOSURE: We were guests of MSC on this sailing, however our opinions are our own, and we were not paid or compensated in any other way by MSC during this voyage.

Marseille, France, walking tour
Marseille has the second-largest population in France, and strolling along this fine street makes it seem like you are in a smaller version of Paris. The sidewalks are wide, a tram runs down the middle, shops and cafés line both sides, scooters glide by, lots of people are out strolling, trees provide greenery, four-story buildings create a human scale, and you are gliding along slightly downhill.
Several side streets that are mostly for pedestrians and lined with more shops offer tempting detours, especially rues de Rome, d’Aubagne, Saint-Ferréol, and Paradis. You can easily walk up one for a few blocks, then cross over to the next and return to La Canabière, zigzagging your way along.
How could this get much better?
Yes. It gets even better when you reach the waterfront end of La Canebière at the vast marina, and with more major streets peeling off in various directions. This total walk from the train station to waterfront is only 1,000 meters, which takes 15 minutes at normal walking speed, but probably longer because you want to stop and detour along the way, adding another 15 minutes at least.
A pleasant and comfortable section of the waterfront is across the marina on the south side, with a series of broad avenues, plazas, pedestrian streets and many restaurants. Walk past the top of the port on Quai de la Fraternité to Cours J. Ballard and explore the four blocks leading from here along the waterfront to Place aux Huiles, with side lanes for pedestrians only. Running through the middle is a classic pedestrian street, Rue Saint-Saëns, leading to Place Thiars. The city’s largest outdoor plaza is one block inland with many outdoor restaurants, Cours Honoré d'Estienne d'Orves, in an open space that was created in the 1980s after community activists successfully pressured the government to demolish a huge multi-level parking lot and put the cars underground.
Aix en Provence France
You're going to find that the city of Aix-en-Provence in the south of France is one of the most delightful places you could ever visit as you’re about to discover out in this detailed movie.
We bring you on a detgailed walking tour of the large pedestrian zone with its charming historic buildings, many shops, cafés, restaurants and the very famous outdoor markets selling fresh produce, clothing, antiques and all kinds of stuff with lots of local characters to observe and interact with. This small city is the perfect size, big enough to keep you busy for several days and yet not too large that you're going to feel lost or frustrated that you can't see everything.
Aix is located in the heart of Provence, a region that has so many wonderful destinations from Avignon to Nice. And you will see that AIX is one place that you must not miss.
You could easily spend a few days here and travel out to visit other nearby destinations, or if you only have one day, it is certainly possible to see most of AIX as we’re going to show you in the movie.

Five Day Road Trip | South of France
We recently spent five days driving around the South of France, and whilst we would have LOVED more time - we were happy with what we got to see!
From the Lavender and Sunflower fields to the beaches of St Tropez and Nice, we absolutely loved the South of France!
It was also definitely an experience driving on the opposite side of the road to what we were used to!
Take a look and see what we got up to!
Enjoy xx
Travel Vlog #5 - Provence - France
The tremendous beauty of the Provence region in France during Lavender season is just insane.
Arles, Provence in the south of France
We are taking you to the beautiful city of Arles, in Provence in the south of France. Arles is most famous for its Roman amphitheater, still intact, and its connections with Van Gogh, who spent one of his final years here painting 200 canvases. Its real appeal, however, is found in the lovely pedestrian promenades, the historic landmarks, museums and tranquil plazas, all of which make Arles one of the most charming places in Europe.

There's a lot of these narrow streets in Arles, there is a small pedestrian zone, there's the various squares and the cafés around it, of course, and historic sites. And we will be showing you those highlights coming up right now as we take a walk through Arles.
The old town of Arles is comfortably small. It's about a square mile. So it's very easy to see the whole thing on foot. You might consider spending a couple of days here.
Or you could visit as a daytrip for example from Avignon which is just 20 miles away and only takes 20 minutes by train to get here. In this program we will show you how you can do everything in one day but certainly if you want to spend more time you decide for yourself. To help you plan your visit we will also present more detailed suggestions about how you could spend a night or two here and still find lots to do.
This is part of a series we’re presenting showing how Avignon makes a very good home base for visiting out to other destinations like Pont du Gard, and St Remy and Nimes along with Aix and Marseille, and especially Arles, the wonderful city of van Gogh and the ancient Romans, with narrow pedestrian lanes weaving throughout the center
The main attractions are the arena, the pedestrian zone and a historic museum. We will show you a good walking route on the map. Of course you can walk anywhere you want, it’s small enough, but this route will take you right through the center and then back to the train station, a route just over 2 miles, or about 3 kilometers, you can do in several hours. But you should also see the history museum while you're here, with its fine collection from the ancient Roman days, an easy detour. So let's assume you're coming in from Avignon on a day trip and you want to see everything.
Aix en Provence & Marseilles
Aix-en-Provence & Marseilles: We visit the Old Town pedestrian zone (Le Vieil Aix), the outdoor produce market, Cours Mirabeau; La Rotonde, Place des Cardeurs, Rue Gaston de Saporta, Cathédrale St-Sauveur, Mazarin district. The French consider Aix to be their favorite town. Then we continue with a quick look at Marseilles on the southern coast in Provence.
