Hawaii Vacation 2015, Episode 2: Sharks with one Ocean Diving
Had an incredible experience with One Ocean Diving swimming with sharks in their natural state (translation: no cage!) on Oahu's North Shore. I first heard about this team through Clark Little's social media accounts and I somehow convinced Rochelle to check it out with me. This group is highly knowledgeable and passionate about shark research and conservation. I highly recommend joining them on a pelagic research dive.

Shark Research on Oahu || One Ocean Research
Sofia Frappi is one of our current research interns visiting from Italy. When she first reached out to us about her Master's project, we were so stoked to help out in any way we could.
Sofy’s focus is testing the potential for Environmental DNA (eDNA), a new and precious tool for molecular biology, in Oahu’s waters--specifically with whale sharks. eDNA is a far less invasive way to collect DNA from the environment, something of which we definitely support, so we’re excited to learn more through our collaborative research.
Here is a little video of her briefly summarizing her project, as well as some of her own words about working with One Ocean Diving and Research. :)
Follow us on Instagram @OneOceanDiving and @OneOceanResearch & learn more about us at OneOceanDiving.com and HelpSaveSharks.org.
All underwater footage was taken on our cage-free shark pelagic snorkel program.

7/24/2013 SHARK CAGE DIVING NORTH SHORE OAHU, HAWAII NORTH SHORE SHARK ADVENTURES
This time on my annual summer trip to Hawaii I decided to go cage diving with sharks. We were brought out and taken to a cage that was located over a 400 ft. plus rift and approximately a mile or so out from the Northern Oahu shoreline. As you can see the water was crystal clear but it was somewhat daunting being in the water with sharks hovering over what seemed-like a blue endless abyss. Notice the sharks circling us. Not to worry, the company did a great job ensuring all of our safety and the staff was very friendly. Video was shot in HD using a GoPro widescreen camera. Shown are Galapagos sharks. You can find more information about them in the link below.

Freediving with World's Biggest Shark ~ Deep Blue
A diver’s extremely close visit with a giant great white shark went viral. Marine biologists say don’t copy her. A group of divers had a rare experience when they recently swam with the largest-known great white shark in waters off of Hawaii. What is believed to be the largest great white shark caught on film, nicknamed Deep Blue, has been spotted off the coast of Hawaii for the first time in years. The massive predator, which measures more than six metres long, was seen while devouring the carcass of a dead sperm whale and was even joined by a handful of brave divers.
Smaller tiger sharks left when the possibly pregnant great white came to dine on the dead whale on Tuesday, according to divers at the scene.
Deep Blue, who was later identified by marine biologists, is thought to have last been seen off the coast of Mexico in 2013. Diver Ocean Ramsey swims next to a female great white shark off the coast of Oahu, Hawaii on January 15, 2019.
Hawaii state officials issued a warning to recreational divers and snorkellers to stay out of the water near the dead sperm whale amid reports some people had climbed on to the carcass to take its teeth as souvenirs.
The Hawaii Department of Land and Natural Resources said in a statement on Wednesday that the decomposing whale carcass had drifted to about 13 kilometres south of Pearl Harbor after being towed 24 kilometres offshore days earlier.
Great white sharks are extremely rare in Hawaii and this individual may be one of the largest recorded.
The @OneOceanDiving research team study shark behavior and teach people how to avoid adverse interactions. Their research and work aims to help reduce shark-related fatalities and educate others on the importance of sharks.
The shark got her name from Discovery Channel diver Mauricio Hoyos Padilla who swam with her on a 2015 documentary and was filmed reaching his hands out of a metal cage to touch her fin.
Pictures taken this week by photographers Kimberly Jeffries and Mark Mohler show the divers in the water, completely dwarfed by the massive shark.
“Deep Blue, possibly the biggest White Shark identified, coming in at nearly 7 metres, was last spotted in Mexico,” Mr Mohler wrote on Facebook. “She decided to come on a Hawaii all-you-can-eat vacation.
“Notice all the chunks of whale and oil floating around.”
The Hawaii-based Ms Jeffries and the other divers were reportedly able to confirm the identity of Deep Blue thanks to a tag implanted on the animal when she appeared at another spot near Mexico two decades ago.
Well known conservationist Ocean Ramsey, another diver who got face-to-face with Deep Blue, said: “She was just this big beautiful gentle giant wanting to use our boat as a scratching post.
“We went out at sunrise, and she stayed with us pretty much throughout the day,” she told the Honolulu Star-Advertiser.
Hawaii waters are usually too warm for great whites compared with California’s Pacific coast, where they feed on sea lions and elephant seals, Ms Ramsey said. She estimated this shark was more than six metres long and 2.4 metres across.
The giant white might have headed to Hawaii because of hunger and a need for extra nutrients in pregnancy, Ms Ramsey added.
Deep Blue is believed to be among the largest great whites in the world and is thought to have roamed the ocean for up to five decades.

Hawaii Adventure Diving with Shark Friends on the North Shore
A nice little free dive with Capt Chris & some Sharky friends on the North Shore of Oahu, Haleiwa, Hawaii. Hawaii Adventure Diving
North Shore Oahu SCUBA Diving
So I was staying on the North Shore of Oahu, HI and I wanted to squeeze a dive in on a calmer looking day. After some research on Yelp and a few other sites I decided to go with Deep Ecology out of Haleiwa. They were very professional and well organized. I will be diving with them on my next trip to the Island.
The dives were pretty nice, but there was still a fair amount of surge so shooting video was very tough. I did the best I could to keep the shots steady. We saw a lot on these dives, and I tried to get some accurate names to most of the fish I got. If I got one or two wrong feel free to let me know ;)
I also cannot believe how many turtles there are on the North side of the Island. They seem to be everywhere, and on this dive they were even following us around. I had one try and crash into me twice.
Shot on May 20th, 2013. Water temp ~75 degrees.

Shark Diving Adventure in Hawaii
During our trip to Hawaii we decided to do something a little crazy. We went on an open ocean shark diving tour. (No cage) After much anticipation and some concern, the day finally arrived. Once we got in the water with these awesome creatures, there was no fear. Just a feeling of calm and peacefulness with these beautiful animals. There were about 5-6 Galapagos sharks and a sandbar shark that appeared towards the end. Such an amazing experience and one we hope to do again one day.
