Nagasaki Japan - Tips For Travellers #233
In this episode Gary Bembridge of TipsForTravellers.com, provides a historical overview, need-to-know facts as well as inspiration, advice and tips for visiting Nagasaki in Japan.
Nagasaki is best known for being the last city that was subject to a nuclear bomb. It happened on 9 August 1945 during WWII when the Americans dropped it, destroying most of the city and killing and injuring over 100,000 people. What fewer people know is that Pucci's famous opera Madame Butterfly was set in the city.
There is more to the city than just memorials and reminders of that event. It is a city that welcomed, and had long links, with the West even when Japan followed an isolation policy. I found it to be a pretty, welcoming city that has gorgeous parks, historical buildings and great museums. The podcast explores all of this. Must-see and Must-Do covered in the podcast:
Atomic Bomb Museum. Nagasaki National Peace Memorial Hall. Atomic Bomb Hypocentre. Nagasaki Peace Park. One-legged Torii Gate. Mount Inasa Lookout. Glover Garden. Oura Catholic Church. Deijima. Kofukuji Temple. 25 Matyrs Memorial. Resources:

Why I Love Japan: Religious freedom / tolerance
The joy of traveling throughout Japan is viewing their religious tolerance. It appears the Japanese are not intolerant of religion as many in the USA have become. Seeing religious symbols on both public and private property seems to be normal in Japan, while currently being view with hostility in the USA.
United States Constitution, First Amendment, in reference to religious freedom:
Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof;......
Japanese Constitution, article 20 in reference to religious freedom:
Freedom of religion is guaranteed to all. No religious organization shall receive any privileges from the State, nor exercise any political authority.
No person shall be compelled to take part in any religious act, celebration, rite or practice.
The State and its organs shall refrain from religious education or any other religious activity.
The Torii is a symbol of Shinto in Japan. One can see the Torii all over Japan. On a road to a power plant in Japan the road traveled under a huge Torii obviously rooted on public lands both sides of the road. Now contrast that to the USA where grieving families leave roadside cross commemorating the spot where a loved-one was lost. Some states have outlawed such displays as not to offend non-believers and those who hallucinate separation of church and state into the United States Constitution.
With Japanese friends including a Buddhist Chief Priest visited Oura Roman Catholic Church in Nagasaki on Kyushu. The church dates back to the 1860's.
Also noted in this video: Meiji Chocolate and Pocky Chocolate, both Japanese products.

Tsushima Island, Japan
Tsushima (対馬)is an island in Nagasaki prefecture that's closer to Korea than mainland Japan. I lived there for a year as a part of the JET Program. There are 6 towns on the island: Kamitsushima, Kamiagata, Mine, Toyotama, Mitsushima, and Izuhara, and they all have lots of interesting places.
Leave a comment if you have any other questions about Tsushima, I will try my best to help!
Main places mentioned in this video:
Kamitsushima: Miuda Beach, Korean Viewpoint
Kamiagata: Tsushima Wildlife Conservation Center, Foreign Country Viewpoint
Mine: Kaijin shrine, Omi no sato
Toyotama: Watazumi Shrine, Mt. Eboshi Viewpoint
Mitsushima: Aso Bay Park, Manzeki Bridge
Izuhara: Shimizuyama Castle Ruins, Banshoin Temple

Secretary-General of the United Nations visits Nagasaki
H.E. Mr. António Guterres, Secretary-General of the United Nations, visited Nagasaki from August 8-9, 2018 to attend the Nagasaki Peace Ceremony.
Secretary-General Guterres met with atomic bomb survivors and intently viewed the materials related to atomic bombing at the Nagasaki Atomic Bomb Museum. At the Ceremony, the Secretary-General issued a message for peace.
Nagasaki, a city of peace, is also a popular sightseeing spot with a beautiful foreign-influenced cityscape and two World Heritage sites.

Hey What's up everyone! Sorry for the delay, I had this essentially finished for almost a week however the internet, uploading process and having the whole video appear on the channel seemed to be a small problem. Drop a Like, Comment, Subscribe for more!
This day was super fun, the peace memorial park, museum, dome, flame, was absolutely gorgeous and a humbling experience for sure. As well as being constantly maintained, there was just so much to see. I'm glad we got to see many of the main attractions in the area. Osaka Castle was cool too. The surrounding area and the exterior (as well as top floor) were definitely the main reasons to visit. The inside was a slight letdown since it has been so modernized, however it was still a great experience with the history of how and why the castle was built in the first place. There were alooootttttt of stairs which wasn't bad, just a heads up for anyone who wants to visit, get ready for leg day ;] there is also a small gift shop too where i picked up some shirts and other small trinkets. Lastly Dontonbori was awesome too. Pretty area, kind of reminded me of Italy a little bit, food was decently priced, super fresh and good. streets were super clean as well as the alleys! Hotel was the worst part no lie, super small rooms for 3 dudes but whatevs. Hope you guys enjoyed, thanks for watching and catch ya for day 5!

[The Incredible Japanese Prison Break]
Aomori, Japan. 1936. Prisoner Yoshie Shiratori had had enough.
He was forced to confess to a murder he did not commit, falsely imprisoned in Aomori Prison, beaten and tortured every night by prison guards, and, now worse, prosecutors were seeking the death penalty. In his mind, it was time to go; but Aomori Prison wasn’t the easiest to escape.
Regardless, Yoshie Shiratori had nothing to lose, and so at 5:30 am he made his move. He knew there would be a 15 minute gap in the patrol time as he had studied the guards’ routine for months; and when the coast was clear, he pulled out a metal wire (which he had smuggled in from the bathhouse) and started to pick the lock. (This was originally the metal support ring that was wrapped around the bathing buckets inmates used to wash themselves).
His hands were stiff from the wintry cold, but after a few minutes of picking, he had success, and his cell door swung open. But he wasn’t out of the woods yet, because there were more locked doors ahead. He knew he only had a few minutes left before the guards would return, and so he wasted no time attempting to pick his way through the remaining security doors.
Now fortunately for him, he was able to make it out of the facility, but the bad news was that he was only halfway to freedom. You see, he was still well within the search perimeter, which meant at any moment the alarm could go off and he’d still be caught.
At 5:45am the guards returned, peering into his cell; and this is what they saw - Shiratori sound asleep in his futon bed. ...

This is the third day of our Kyushu trip. This video will take you to Yutoku Inari, the large shrine in Saga. We started from Saga station then stop at Hizen Kashima station after that we took the bus around 15 minutes then arrived. The bus fee is 320 yen per person per trip. Today is Monday so we saw only few people coming. But it was good, it was so peaceful. We climbed up to the top of mountain where is the highest point of this shrine. The view there was so nice plus the cold wind. It was worth to be there.
After thta we went to another small shrine near by. I mean it is in the same area of South east Saga. Because in summer the day is longer than winter so we have more time left. We go to Tara station then walked around 10 minutes. The way from station and The shrine there were nothing. So quiet, once we came to the Kaichu shrine we could see few people were taking photo. But I love there. I was so happy to be there. I got nice photos from this place a lot. We were there for only 45 minutes. It was too hot to be outside. We made our stop at supermarket near by before taking train go back to Hizen Kashima and then Saga.
Endangered Southern White Rhino Marking His Territory
RHINO HORN IS NOT MEDICINE
Rhinoceroses have poor eyesight so their pathways are marked with scent, this shows you how the scent is spread...
Basically the rhino has a midden/latrine site where he defacates, afterwards the rhino kicks the faeces with his back feet enabling him to leave the scent on the ground as he walks away.
The Southern White Rhino or Square-Lipped Rhino is endangered and numbers are dropping due to poaching. In 15 years the species may be extinct.

Rob The Ranger is a proudly South African Youtuber
The purpose of the Rob The Ranger Wildlife Videos YouTube channel is to show what it is like to experience seeing wild animals on an African safari. Nature Documentaries are often highly edited to tell a story, wildlife safaris are not, and the idea here is to show the wildlife sightings the way they were seen. Safari tours in Africa are generally suitable for all ages and this channel can be considered an educational channel about incredible nature, some scenes in the nature videos may be more graphic than people are used to but this is the reality of nature and is what you would see if you were present on such a safari in person. Safaris in Kenya, South Africa, or any other African country are an unrivalled experience for anyone with a passion for nature, wildlife photography, and travel. Hopefully the animal videos on this channel can provide a glimpse into what the nature experience is like and encourage more people to take a wildlife safari one day.

Keiko Ogura's Interview
Keiko Ogura is a hibakusha, an atomic bomb survivor. She was eight years old on August 6, 1945, when the US dropped the “Little Boy” atomic bomb on Hiroshima. She eventually married Kaoru Ogura, who served as director of the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum and passed away in 1979. After his death, she took up the mission to spread knowledge about the bombings and keep the survivors’ stories alive.
During the 2003 exhibition of the Enola Gay, she was the official interpreter for other hibakusha. Additionally, she established the Hiroshima Interpreters for Peace and published several books, including the Hiroshima Handbook, Hiroshima Peace Park Guide, Hip’s Hiroshima Guide and One Day in Hiroshima.
In this interview, Ogura recalls the events of August 6 and how her family survived the bombing. She also discusses the long-term physical and physiological impacts she and other hibakusha suffered, as well as the social stigma of being atomic bomb survivors.
