Oregon City
A video postcard of Oregon City, Oregon. Oregon City was established at Willamette Falls on the Willamette River in 1829 by John McLoughlin for the Hudson's Bay Company, to utilize the power of the falls to operate a lumber mill. In 1844, Oregon City became the first incorporated city west of the Rocky Mountains, and was considered the final stop of the Oregon Trail. The Oregon City Bridge, designed by Conde B. McCullough, is a steel half-through arch structure constructed in 1922 (although it appears to be a concrete arch due to the gunite concrete coating over the steel arch members).

The Willamette Valley Flood of 1996 was part of a larger series of floods in the Pacific Northwest of the United States which took place between late January and mid-February, 1996. It was Oregon's largest flood event in terms of fatalities and monetary damage during the 1990s. The floods spread well beyond Oregon's Willamette Valley, extending west to the Oregon Coast and east toward the Cascade Mountains. Significant flood damage also affected the American states of Washington, Idaho (particularly the north of the state) and California. The floods were directly responsible for eight deaths in Oregon, as well as over US$500 million in property damage throughout the Pacific Northwest. Three thousand residents were displaced from their homes.[1]
An unusual confluence of weather events made the floods particularly severe. The winter season preceding the floods had produced abnormally high rainfall and relatively low snowfall. The heavy rains saturated the ground and raised river levels throughout January 1996. In late January, a heavy snowstorm padded snowpacks throughout the region. This was followed by a deep freeze that lasted for six to ten days. The new layer of snow was quickly melted by a warm subtropical jetstream which arrived on February 6. The jetstream brought along further rains. The combination of the additional rain, the saturated ground, and the melting snowpacks engorged dozens of streams and tributaries, which in turn flooded into the region's major rivers.[2]
Communities along the main stem include Springfield and Eugene in Lane County; Harrisburg in Linn County; Corvallis in Benton County; Albany in Linn and Benton counties; Salem in Marion County; Newberg in Yamhill County; Oregon City, West Linn, Milwaukie, and Lake Oswego in Clackamas County; and Portland in Multnomah and Washington counties.

Grants Pass, Oregon
The city of Grants Pass is located on the banks of the Rogue River in southern Oregon. The first Post Office was established in 1865 and the town was incorporated in 1887, a year after it had become the county seat.
Today the city and surrounding area boasts 35 thousand residents, where, as you quickly become aware.... it's all about the climate! Enjoy the journey.
The Rogue River is the centerpiece of Grants Pass. It draws thousands of tourists to it's Wild and Scenic whitewater every year.
The river also drew the first people to live in this valley, The Takelma. The Takelma and other indigenous groups lived along the river and flourished for thousand of years.
The discovery of gold spurred the first white settlement of the region in 1852.
Today the the city has transitioned from a timber based economy to more of a tourism and retail center.
In 1922, a group of local businessmen incorporated the Grants Pass Cavemen. Taking their name from the nearby Oregon Caves National Monument. This statue was erected in 1971 to honor the cavemen and the recently refurbished statue now greets visitors at the north end of town. Also here is an information center packed full of points of interest for a visit to Grants Pass and the surrounding area.
It really is all about the climate as Grants Pass enjoys a climate of short hot summers with mild seasons in between.
It is said the It's the Climate sign got its start before the turn of the century when business owners would advertise their offerings over the street with similar signs made of cloth. Today the lit sign proudly carries on the tradition.Just past the sign is historic G street. Some of the first buildings erected in Grants Pass are here.
For the history buff the Josephine County Historical Society is the place to visit. The House Museum is on the corner of 5th and J Streets and the Research Library is next door on the corner of 5th and K Streets, a few short blocks from the G Street Historical District.
Grants Pass is known for its parks. Some of which are just a few square feet across. Riverside Park is the largest in the city. The acres of lush grounds are a locals favorite. The park is located on the Rogue River near where the first ferries operated and also where the first bridge over the Rogue River was built in the late 1800's.
Opposite of the park is where the jetboats launch for the summer season of trips down the river. Grants Pass, Oregon, I hope you enjoyed the journey.... Until next time... I'm Scott Walter.
Oregon's Petrified Ghost Forest - Neskowin Oregon
A visit to Neskowin Oregon reveals and interesting site. During low tide the remains of a petrified forest becomes visible in a small cove on the beach. An amazing array of petrified stumps fill the cove. Once the tide returns there is no visible sign of what lies beneath the waves. Truely worth th stop if your passing through at low tide.

Homelessness in Salem Oregon
About a month ago the city of Salem Oregon decided to pass a no camping ordinance for the recent influx of homeless people camping on downtown sidewalks. This sort of fixed the problem but only applied to city/state/federally property. Now the homeless are occupying the sidewalks of local businesses and are most likely not going to move anytime soon. At this weeks Salem city council meeting the issue was brought up that this had negative repercussions for local businesses. Many of the homeless in our city are not only from out of town, they are from out of state aswell which makes it difficult to help them being as they've never paid into the Oregon tax system. We have had a greyhound bus full of homeless individuals sent to our small city from Atlanta Georgia last spring.
This is not a video criticizing any particular policy or politician, I am just releasing footage I took personally while driving in downtown Salem Oregon.
