Oregon State Capitol - Salem, Oregon - 2018
Housing the state legislature, governor's office, and secretaries of state and treasury, the Oregon State Capitol was built between 1936 and 1937. The current building is actually the third capitol building for the state of Oregon, the previous two both having been destroyed by fire. A large portion of the Art Deco building is made of marble and features a large cylindrical cupola, which caused some aesthetic controversy at the time of its debut, topped with a golden statue of an Oregon pioneer.

Some 100 gun rights activists rallied outside Salem's State Capitol building on Friday in solidarity with Ammon Bundy and other occupiers of the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge, who are currently on trial in Portland.

Edward Dickinson Baker Day at the Oregon State Capitol part 1 of 2.wmv
Today is a historic first ...the inaugural Edward Dickinson Baker Day in Oregon, a memorial to Oregon's Civil War hero and United States Senator who died over 150 years ago on the battlefield of Ball's Bluff while leading his troops into battle against the Confederate Army. Oregon is continuing to show its pride in the life, triumphs and tragedies of its pioneer statesman and soldier by memorializing him with this day, an honor bestowed upon Colonel Edward Dickinson Baker during the first year of the American Civil War Sesquicentennial.
Senator Baker loved Oregon so much, that during the first months of the Civil War, he turned down two offers of appointments to Generalships. If Senator Baker had accepted either of them, he would have had to resign from Congress, but Baker wanted to return to Oregon after the war, to continue to help the fledgling state to grow and prosper during the first years of statehood. Baker was the only sitting member of the United States Senate in history to die in battle.

Oregon State Capitol Building Tour September 2016
I've lived in Oregon for 37 years. I've finally gotten around to visiting Salem, Oregon's capital city. Of course no visit would be complete without checking out the Capitol building and its beautiful grounds.
The First Capitol completed construction in 1855. According to Wikipedia, the building caught on fire and was a total loss by the end of that year.
During those years Corvallis served as the Oregon government's seat of power and thus became the state's capital city for a time. By the time the second Capitol was constructed between 1873 and 1876 Salem was once again the capital city of Oregon.
Salem is not Oregon's most populated city. That distinction belongs to Portland. Most capital cities are in fact the most populated cities in their respective states. But there are a few exceptions.
Also the State Capitol is among one of the newest in the country. It was built by 1938 after the second Capitol was also destroyed by a fire in 1935.
Oregon's history is far too complicated to discuss here. It is relavant to note that the Senate Chamber was darkened in honor of Senator Alan Bates who died suddenly on August 6th. He represented The City of Medford since The year 2000.
I was humbled by the beauty and grace of the Capitol. Its a shame many people take it for granted. Thousands of protesters gather on the front steps of the Captiol to complain about what's bothering them whether it be a reaction to gun control laws, gay marriage, or transgendered bathrooms. I was surprised by how tranquil the Capitol was. It reminded me of a cemetery. I have had my share of issues with the government over the years but seeing the Capitol with my own eyes reaffirmed my love, admiration and respect for not only the sate of Oregon. but for the entire United States.
