Isle of Marken, the Netherlands
Marken used to be a small island community in the Dutch Zuyder Zee. In the old days the island was flooded regularly. The people of Marken armed themselves against the water by building their dwellings on stilts and on mounds, here called 'werfs'.
In 1932 the Afsluitdijk was completed and the Zuyder Zee became IJsselmeer, a freshwater lake.
Marken is a tourist attraction for its dark green painted houses on the dike, the traditional costumes, the old harbour and for Sijtje Boes, a lady-resident who started a business of selling souvenirs in the early 1900s. Her house is open for tours and is still a souvenir shop.
Unfortunately, Marken is no longer an island. Since 1957 it is connected to the mainland by means of a two kilometer long dike.

Marken 2013
The village of Marken was separated from the mainland after a storm surge in the 13th century. A centuries-long period of isolation followed for the community which made their money with fishing. The typical houses and the traditional costumes are reminiscent of the past. In the old days, the island was flooded quite regularly. For this reason, houses were built on stilts and on mounds. The dike, which was constructed in 1957, once more links the island to the mainland.
Marken. A picturesque former island in the Zuiderzee - Holland Holiday
Picturesque Marken,
former island in the Zuiderzee
Only 22 kilometers from Amsterdam you will find a very interesting peninsula … Marken.
Famous for the many wooden houses painted in traditional colours. Marken has its own traditional costumes. Many inhabitants still wear them. Because they love it, or for the tourists.
Watch Marken’s woode shoe factory.
Among the most famous traditional Dutch products are wooden shoes. Nowadays no one wears them, only during events in tourist places and by farmers.
In the past Marken was an island in the Zuiderzee which was open to the North Sea. Before they closed off the Zuiderzee in 1932 with a dam there were many destructive floodings.
That is why many houses were built on (artificial) mounds.
After the closing of the Zuiderzee the water surrounding Marken was renamed Markermeer, (in English) Marken’s lake.
In 1957 a dike to the mainland was built. So Marken became a peninsula.
Visitors can reach it by car now, but you have to leave your car in the parking area.
If you want to see all of the island in a short time we advise you to rent a bike over there.
It is also possible to visit Marken by boat. Ferries sail from Volendam to Marken frequently. The ferry moors in the cozy harbour of Marken.
The video shows you the distinctive lighthouse ‘Het Paard van Marken’, (in English) ‘The Horse of Marken’.
Marken is a very special place to visit.

Marken is a village in the Waterland and Zaan Region, North Holland, Netherlands on a peninsula in the IJsselmeer lake. It is known for its characteristic wooden houses and traditional costumes. It used to be an island in the former Zuiderzee, but is now connected to the mainland by a causeway.
This picturesque little village was originally situated on an island. Floods were regular and often disastrous. To protect their belongings and themselves from the water, the inhabitants created artificial dwelling hills on which they build their houses. As fishery became the main economic activity, the population grew rapidly. When the Afsluitdijk was finished in 1932 and the IJsselmeer lake created, access to the sea was blocked and fishery activities almost came to an end. When a dike between Marken and the mainland was built in 1957, Marken ceased to be an island. Nevertheless, the village still has the look and feel of a fishermen's town and an island. For over a century, it has drawn in visitors who wanted to have a glance at its traditional costumes and picturesque houses.

A picturesque (former, before 1957) Island with its characteristic black wooden houses with an elevated living built to sustain flooding.
Marken

Fishing Villages Full of Life and Nature… December 2018
Volendam And Marken (1955)
Volendam and Marken, Holland.
L/S of a village harbour. M/S of a man dressed in traditional costume walking along side of the harbour, passing the old boats. ...on the shores of what was once Holland's famous Zuider Zee, near Amsterdam, is one of the most colourful little villages in all the Netherlands - Volendam. - tells the voiceover.
M/S of two women wearing traditional costumes. They walk along an old boat. C/U shot of the face of an elderly man wearing traditional hat, smoking pipe. Cut to a young man on the deck of a boat repairing a fishing net.
It looks as if in Volendam the time has stopped centuries ago. Voiceover informs that the inhabitants of this village have not changed their lifestyles for centuries. And the images are there to confirm his claim: traditional costumes, hats, clogs, old boats, old houses. It is the ideal setting for a period play and, naturally, great tourist attraction.
Leaving Volendam should mean going back to the present time - but it depends what side one choses. C/U shot of a young couple (wearing modern clothes - tourists) on the boat. Man points at something, woman looks. L/S (eye-match) of a very colourful island. Less then a mile off shore is the island of Marken - one more place where history lives on as present. Houses and boats on this little island look the same as they did centuries ago - and people too!
C/U shot of the faces of a woman and a little girl. They are wearing traditional costumes, much more colourful then those of the people from Volendam. M/S of the people wearing traditional costumes and clogs. M/S of several children wearing traditional costumes. Succession of shots showing the untouched architecture of the past times. Lovely - apart from on a Saturday night.

Marken - Olanda
Marken è sicuramente un luogo molto caratteristico;

Marken, Marker Museum 2013
A row of eel-smoking houses in the Kerkbuurt area have been converted to the Marker Museum , which delves into Marken's history and includes the re-created interior of a fisherman’s home, with a wealth of personal odds and ends.
