Concert choir sings song about atomic bombing of USA at Isaac's Cathedral in St. Petersburg
The concert choir of St. Petersburg, performing on February 23 at St. Isaac's Cathedral, sang a song about the atomic bombing of the United States. The song by Andrei Kozlovsky was written during the 1980s. The choir performed it after the main program, in which the choir performed songs by Vladimir Vysotsky, Alexandra Pakhmutova and others.
The song, which was originally written as a piece of satire to Soviet propaganda, sounds particularly ominous against the background of recent statements from Russian President Vladimir Putin about the targets for Russia's new missiles.
The lyrics of the song can be translated as follows:
On a submarine with an atomic engine on
and with a dozen bombs up to a hundred megatons
I crossed the Atlantic and call gunner Petrov
to take aim at the city of Washington!
The satirical song is about the atomic bombing of Washington, which Soviet soldiers were ready to do for just as little as three rubles. Many in Russia did not find the performance of such a song appropriate, especially in an Orthodox temple and suggested calling those responsible to criminal account for insulting the feelings of believers.

RUSSIA: ST PETERSBURG: ANTIQUES ARE BEING SMUGGLED OUT OF COUNTRY
Russian/Nat
Russia is being drained of her national treasures.
Antiques are flowing out of the country at an alarming rate.
Billions of dollars are lost and priceless treasures are disappearing, never to be seen again in Russia.
The smuggling of antiques has become the Russian underworld's third biggest business, second only to the arms and narcotics trade.
Every day hundreds of planes fly in and out of Russia, bringing thousands of visitors.
When they leave, most take a little bit of Russia with them. But while many tourists are satisfied with a few matrioshka dolls or a traditional Russian fur hat, many others take home souvenirs a lot more valuable.
Customs officials at Russia's international airports have stepped up efforts to crack down on antique smuggling but admit that they are fighting an uphill battle.
Yevgeny Fioctistov heads a special team working with the St Petersburg customs.
They have collected an impressive array of icons and other valuable antiques from foreigners but also from Russians who have taken advantage of their new travel freedoms to engage in what has become a multi-million dollar industry.
SOUNDBITE: (Russian)
In Russia, like in the rest of the world, theft of antiques and national artefacts is growing. Russian police and customs officials have determined that we are losing three trillion roubles (600 (m) million U-S dollars) every year in smuggling. And even these figures are rising.
SUPER CAPTION: Yevgeny Fioctistov, Chief of Criminal Investigations into Theft of Russian Antiques
Customs officials at St. Petersburg's Pulkovo airport say they've prevented more than 700 smuggling attempts a year, but that represents just the tip of the iceberg.
Individuals involved in the illegal activity range from foreign tourists, to Russian politicians, to high-level diplomats.
Recently one of Russia's most famous smuggling cases was brought to court. A leading Russian lawyer, Dmitry Yakubovsky, was caught red-handed in an attempt to smuggle precious manuscripts.
Ironically, Yakubovsky had been appointed by President Boris Yeltsin to look into government corruption.
His attempt to sell over 89 manuscripts would have brought him a payment of up to 250 (m) million dollars.
Sentenced to five years in a prison camp, Yakubovsky's case was a rare success in the battle to curtail smuggling. But the majority of smugglers go unnoticed.
SOUNDBITE: (Russian)
It's absolutely obvious that the theft of antiques in Russia has taken third place in the crime world. It is second only to arms and narcotics smuggling.
SUPER CAPTION: Yevgeny Fioctistov, Chief of Criminal Investigations into Theft of Russian Antiques
The famous Peter and Paul fortress houses the remains of the Russian Tsars. But it's also currently running an exhibit of recovered Russian artefacts.
Customs officials confiscated so many treasures in 1996 that they decided to exhibit their cache.
Relics from all eras of Russian history adorn the walls -- from antique jewellery to ancient Orthodox icons.
And the trade in Russian history continues. At this market in St. Petersburg traders are in a constant search for cheap antiques.
Russians buy at low, low prices from individuals desperate for cash. They then sell the goods to foreigners at a higher price or to middlemen who smuggle the goods out of the country.
At Pulkovo airport the usual stream of tourists and Russian travellers pass through customs checks.
Although some of the relics they are concealing will be discovered, most will go undetected.
Every day, with every plane, Russia is losing a little more of its national heritage.
