Osaka Travel Tips: 10 Things to Know Before You Go to Osaka
Things YOU need to know before you travel to Osaka Japan. Osaka is the third most populated city in Japan with 2.7M in the city and 19 Million in the region. Osaka is often overlooked for Tokyo and Kyoto, but Osaka has its own charm that makes it a wonderful destination for visitors. Osaka is a welcoming, exciting, and place that should really be on your travel radar!
Osaka is located on the main island of Honshu, roughly in the center of Japan. Osaka is a great place to base yourself when visiting Japan. In the centre of the Kansai region, landing at it’s international airport will place you within an hours local train journey to Kyoto, Nara and Kobe. Osaka is worth worth 3-5 days.
2- Food
Osaka is famous in Japan for their food. Its nickname is “the nation’s kitchen”.
Most well known: okonomiyaki, which is a dish made with meat, seafood, and noodles.
Takoyaki, delicious fried octopus balls that are sure to curve your hunger cravings at night.
Kushikatsu. Kushi refers to the bamboo skewers that the food is on and you can find meat, vegetable and even cheese varieties here. Don’t forget to dip your fried goods into the tonkatsu sauce (but strictly NO double dipping)
And of course Ramen!
Osaka is home to 200+ Michelin starred restaurants and Dontoburi is the epicentre of that.
Aside from the delicious food, Osaka is also well known for its high quality Sake, or Japanese rice wine. The sake is made from fresh water that comes from the Osaka mountains
3-Kita (Umeda) North District
One of 2 major districts in Osaka
Newly rebuilt JR Osaka station is the heart
Business and lots of Hotels
Grand Front Osaka is amazing
YenTenjimbashi-suji Shopping Street
This 2.6km covered shopping arcade is the longest in Osaka
Umeda Sky Building is one of the tallest and most impressive buildings in Osaka. It’s more like two buildings connected by a bridge at the top. There’s a great observation deck at the top called the Kuchu Teien (“Garden in the Sky”) Observatory.
HEP 5 Ferris Wheel - 500
4- Minami (Namba) South District
Osaka’s 2nd downtown
Neon lights, crazy signs
Japan's version of Times Square
Shinsaibashi and Namba
Dotombori Arcade runs parallel to the canal on the south side and it’s lined with some of Osaka’s most famous and largest restaurants, which compete for business with huge signs and giant mechanical crabs etc.
Midosuji (shopping street)
Osaka’s “main street,” Midosuji is a broad street All the major international luxury brands have outlets here
Hozenji Yokocho (traditional alley)
Two small blocks east of Midosuji and two small blocks south of the Dotombori Arcade, you’ll find one of the most beautiful streets in all of Osaka and it looks like it was magically transported from somewhere in Kyoto. Entering this street is like slipping 200 years back in time.
Doguyasuji Arcade (kitchen and cooking supply shopping arcade)
About five minutes’ walk southeast of Namba subway station (easily reached on foot from Dotombori
Amerika Mura (trendy district)
Amerika Mura (or “Amemura” to the locals)
5- Otaku Paradise
Den Den Town. Osaka’s answer to Akihabara and not far from Namba station, here you’ll find all the weird and wonderful Japanese toys and manga you’ve heard about on the internet. Watch your step or you could unintentionally fall into adult-only territory. (Or intentionally, if that’s what you’re after.)
Den-Den is the city’s electronics, camera, computer and pop culture shopping neighborhood. It’s about 10 minutes’ walk southwest of Namba Station, in Nippombashi, running roughly between Nippombashi and Ebisucho stations on the Sakaisuji subway line. Many of the shops here have someone on hand who can speak English, so don’t be afraid to ask for help when looking for something.

OSAKA TO KYOTO
Whilst in Osaka, we decided to spend a day in nearby Kyoto.
Kinkaku-ji (金閣寺, literally Temple of the Golden Pavilion), officially named Rokuon-ji (鹿苑寺, literally Deer Garden Temple), is a Zen Buddhist temple in Kyoto, Japan. It is one of the most popular buildings in Japan, attracting a large number of visitors annually. It is designated as a National Special Historic Site and a National Special Landscape, and it is one of 17 locations making up the Historic Monuments of Ancient Kyoto which are World Heritage Sites.

TIPS/ADVICES
›››We would recommend staying at an accommodation around Namba or DenDen Town. Both are central to where all the fun touristy things are! We stayed in DenDen Town and mostly everything was walking distance away.
›››Purchase an Osaka amazing pass! This pass is a definite bang for your buck and really allows you to see what the city of Osaka has to offer. This pass allows you free access to many attractions, discounts for certain things and unlimited access to the subway!!! It was amazing!
›››Arrive to attractions EARLY in the morning. A lot of attractions can get over-crowded during prime time. Jim and I woke up early everyday and really enjoyed the quiet, peacefulness of the attractions we visited. For example, Osaka Castle and Shitennoji can get really crowded.
FAQ's ›››
›››Q: Could you also please give me a list of where to eat in Osaka?
›››A: we highly recommend exploring the dotonbori area and let your nose do the guiding. Ichiran ramen is a must visit for sure but be sure to visit around 11-3pm as we found that there was not a very long wait at that time. We also found the Pablo Cafe right by the Glico Running Man sign was very delicious! We highly recommend the original flavor cheese tarts. Lesli is a huge fan of their soft serve ice cream for their unique light cheese flavored ice cream. Last recommendation is in the restaurant area in the basement of umeda station called Shabu Sai. It is an all you can eat for a very affordable price (2900yen). The beef was very soft and tender and they have an excellent selection of vegetables.

From Shin-Osaka, How to go to Tokuyama by Shinkansen train? Japan Info04 Moochan
Tokuyama station is located in Shunan city in Yamaguchi prefecture. Shunan’s (Tokuyama) industrial complex is very close to Tokuyama station. Petrochemical zones have been reinvented as tourist attractions due to their unique, otherworldly beauty. The ‘kojo yakei’ (夜景meaning ‘factory night view’) phenomenon kicked off several years ago. Visitors can enjoy the beauty after dark from the station.
How to get there by Shinkansen?
When visitors use direct shinkansen train, the one way journey will take about 100 minutes with a cost of from 11,560 yen. There are multiple connections for every hour. Shin-Osaka station and Tokuyama station are connected with each other by the JR Sanyo Shinkansen(山陽新幹線). Only some of Shinkansen trains top at Tokuyama station so visitors may have to transfer from Nozomi or Sakura to Kodama train at Hiroshima station.
Seat Classes
Generally, shinkansen trains in Japan offer seats in two classes, which are usually found in separate cars:
Ordinary Car
Just like the name suggests, ordinary seats are the regular seats found on all shinkansen trains. Even though the size and foot space of ordinary seats varies between train sets, ordinary seats on shinkansen generally offer a pleasant trips and generous amount of foot space.
Green Car
It is comparable to business class on airplanes. Green cars offer seats that are larger and more comfortable than ordinary seats and offer more foot space. Green Cars have a tendency to be less crowded than ordinary cars.
Japan Rail Pass
The Japan Rail Pass is valid on Sakura but not on Nozomi or Mizuho trains, The JR West Sanyo Pass and the JR Sanyo-Shikoku-Kyushu Rail Pass are valid on all trains. For further information click the link below and check our movie!

Tsutenkaku - 通天閣 - The observation tower in Sinsekai Osaka
Tsutenkaku Tower is considered as the heart and the soul of Osaka city. With the height of 103 metres and the age of over 100 years, the Tower is the heaven’s stairway that can taking you to the sky and meet the God of happiness Billiken.
Tsutenkaku was the tallest tower in Japan and even the tallest construction in the East Asia when opening in 1912 with the height of 64 metres. At that time, it was built following the desire of making a reproduction of Eiffel Tower in the foundation of Arch of Triumph. According to Fujisawa Nangaku- a Confucian scholar living in Early Meiji Period, the name Tsutenkaku meant “the Construction to Heaven”. In 1943, there was a fire in the Tower and it was torn down to provide steel for wars. After lots of upheavals due to fire and war, the Tower was rebuilt by architect Tachu Naito in 1956 as its present shape, becoming the resilient and flourishing symbol of Osaka and registered as a tangible cultural property of Japan in 2007.
From the very top of the Tower, visitors can get th 360-degree view with Ikoma mountain in the border with Nara and Rokko mountain of Kobe. The top of Tower was reopened as a golden observation platform to celebrate 100th anniversary of the original Tsutenkaku. Take your look clearer, you can see the overall picture of the city opening out from the Tower’s foot. It is not too high to feel breathtaking and warm enough for you to feel life’s taste. You can see clearly all activities, touch the smoke and listen to even some breath below. That is why they said that from here, you can touch the heart and the soul of Osaka. It is not so imposing but warm and honest.
Tsutenkaku Tower is famous for the statue Billiken. The small statue has a straight line on the head, plump cheeks and a complacent smile. Billiken has been loved as the God of luck and happiness and he will make all your wishes come true if you stroke slightly his feet. Actually, Billiken was born in the US in 1908 following the dream of the artist Florence Pretz and became a phenomenon all over the world. The present Billiken is the third generation with yellow hair.
There are many other interesting places in Tsutenkaku Tower. The Luna park diorama on the 3rd floor displays many diorama pictures and images of Luna park, Tsutenkaku Tower and Shinseika 100 years ago. Kinniku man- a favorite character in a Japanese anime is the theme of Kinniku Museum on the 2nd floor. There are many Kinniku man statues, masks and images.
The Tsutenkaku Theater in the basement has rakugo performances- a form of strorytelling, Manzai performances telling comic stories and local enka with famous ballad singers in the weekend.
On the top of Tower, the light can show tomorrow's weather forecast by combining different colors and even LED lightning around the Tower can have different colors in each seasons. Try to reach Tsutenkaku Tower at night, you can see how amazing it is.
Tsutenkaku Tower is surrounded by many shop and small restaurants with the specialities kushikatsu. These restaurants are decorated with many colors and has some styles of Osaka in World War II period. Take your time go around those shop and try food that makes Osaka unique.
