Asheville Ale Trail samples Oskar Blues Pinner IPA
The Asheville Ale Trail talks with Anne-Fitten Glenn of Oskar Blues Brewing in Brevard, North Carolina about their new release - the Pinner Throwback IPA. Drawing its name from the brewery’s counter-culture roots, PINNER IPA is billed as an easy drinking dry-hopped brew. Registering in at sessionable 4.9 percent ABV, PINNER will be the lowest alcohol content beer produced at Oskar Blues’ brewhouses. Dry-hopped with several different hops, including Mosaic, Citra, Eldorado, Azzaca, and a new experimental varietal, we’re told PINNER IPA will have”a tropical, stoned fruit aroma with hints of pine and smooth malt in the flavor”.

Impromptu Wedding at Oscar Blues Brewing Co., Brevard, NC
Filmed and edited by Jefferson Yount and crew. At Oscar Brews Brewing Co. I had a customer from Florida walk into Wag! A Unique Pet Boutique on Monday morning of Thanksgiving week. I chatted with about dog behavior, horses, etc. I gave her a referral to a trainer, animal communicator and a horse farm here. As she was leaving, I told her to call us if there was anything else we could help her with. She said, actually, do you know anyone who could marry my fiance and me today? They had gotten a marriage license here in Henderson County a month and a half ago and it was going to expire soon. Though they had made the trip back up here several times, they were never able to get married (national holidays, courthouse too busy, marriages only available on Wednesday and Friday, etc). So I called up my good friend Duke, of Duke Says Sold, and they planned to meet for the ceremony at Oscar Blues that evening. A local florist, Pam Headstrom of The Flower Market, offered to make a bouquet. When we arrived at Oscar Blues, there was a 16 person bluegrass jam session in progress. I wrangled the group into performing for the ceremony. When we went downstairs to set up, there were a group of folks with GoPro cameras who kindly agreed to film the entire thing, after they realized that I wasn't joking. It turned out that this group of people were professional video editors from Nashville, TN and they filmed and put together this great video, using only Iphones and GoPros. It was absolutely incredible and an experience that we all will not soon forget! Congratulations to the happy couple, Malinda and Lex!

Oskar Blues Builds Bike Ranch
The landscape of Dupont State Forest is full of amazing trails and jaw dropping waterfalls.
But at the former Shoal Falls Farm in Henderson County, some appreciate the beauty of something as simple as dirt.
The stunning soil is part of a work in progress. That's incredibly unique to have this much great clay, for building something like this, says Cashion Smith, co-owner of the Bike Farm that's part of a bigger project called the Oskar Blues Reeb Ranch.
The mountain dirt is the foundation of a destination expected to bring biking and beer together.
This clay is perfect, says Smith. It'll just harden and bake as it rains and the sun shines on it.
Brevard-based Oskar Blues bought this property with a grand vision about three months ago. Just to create a bike park, potentially a place to grow hops for our beers, and potentially have a place for cows that will consume our spent grain, says Oskar Blues Spokesperson Anne-Fitten Glenn. Putting people on bikes, selling smiles, adds Smith.
You may wonder how it's all tied together. Oskar Blues founder Dale Katechis has been biking in Western North Carolina for two decades, which is part of the reason he chose Brevard to build a second brewery. We have a mountain bike company Reeb cycles so this is the culmination of things we care about, Glenn says.
By merging passions, they hope to create something special. Put people on bikes, share a cold beer after a ride, and a swimming hole to jump in, Smiths says. You know it's an unparalleled experience.
Drawing visitors to an unlikely source of natural beauty, the dirt beneath their wheels.

Jeff Lenosky Trailboss - Oskar Blues Brewery Edition
Oskar Blues Permit Violations
Officials with Brevard are now faced with more than $9,000 in fines after North Carolina's Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) fined the city after violating the state issued permit for its waste water treatment plant.
City officials including Jay Johnston, Director of Engineering and Utilities for Brevard, say the problems lie with Oskar Blues Brewery that's not treating their waste water properly before it leaves the plant. We are responsible for our permit and our violations, says Johnston. North Carolina DENR and the city recognizes that the first and the most immediate way to get back into compliance is for Oskar Blues to pre-treat their wastewater.
News 13 reported on the issues involving Oskar Blues lack of waste water treatment at their Brevard Brewery last September. Johnston said the waste water that comes from the plant is hot and at times reaches 140-degrees. There are also other issues with the release that impacts Brevard's waste water facility which is unable to treat the concentration of water coming from the brewery into Brevard's treatment facility. The city had given Oskar Blues a grace period to put in proper infrastructure, but Johnston said that period ended June 2013
Reports obtained by News 13 show Brevard has violated permit restrictions 13 of the last 16 months. The reason we are violating at the plant is connected to the effluent we are receiving from the Oskar Blues facility, says Joe Moore, Brevard City Manager.
Moore says in recent days officials at the brewery have presented plans for their treatment plant. He says the brewery has done some things to try and deal with the water issues but that it's not getting the job done. News 13 contacted officials locally and in Colorado at Oskar Blues headquarters, but a local spokeswoman said the company has no comment.
A letter dated June 9, 2014 shows DENR has fined the city of Brevard $2,147 for waste water permit violations for September 2013 and October 2013. The city received another fine for $1600 for November 2014 and $3100 for January 2014 waste water plant violations.
The city cannot pass the fines onto the brewery because there are currently no permitting policies in place to demand the brewery pay the fines even if evidence from DENR shows the plant is at fault. The City of Brevard plans to now move forward with issuing a permit policy to the plant to operate and use city water. In that permit will be specific requirements that the plant must meet to show that Oskar Blues is working towards managing their waste water issues.
Johnston says the brewery lets out approximately 15,000 gallons a day of waste water from their plant that then goes to Brevard's treatment center. The water ultimately spills out into the Davidson river which feeds into the French Broad.
Jeff Menzel, with NCDENR says the following about the violations: The limitations of the permit are set up to protect the environment and health of the stream, The French Broad. It takes oxygen out of the water when there are these limit violations. That has the potential to threaten the aquatic system, including fish, if the violations are allowed to continue, en masse.
Ultimately the fines would have to be paid using taxpayer money. City officials are trying to negotiate with DENR to bring the fines down and instead have the funds go towards improvements at the waste water plant. Johnston says he expects the violations of the city's permit will continue for another twelve months until Oskar Blues gets the necessary infrastructure to manage the waste water they're releasing on a weekly basis.

Brevard to Borrow Millions to Update Wastewater%
BREVARD, N.C. -- A mountain town is borrowing millions to bring its wastewater treatment plant up to date.
Brevard was fined $9,000 just last fall for water quality violations. Oskar Blues Brewery has been a major test of the city's aging infrastructure.
The hefty loans secured from the EPA will help Brevard handle both this brewery and future growth.
Oskar Blues brings revenue, jobs and notoriety, but mayor Jimmy Harris says the brewery's benefits also present challenges to a small town.
So obviously if future growth is in Brevard's plans we need to do something about this, Mayor Harris said. So this loan was good news.
For the fifth time, the city is poised to take out a loan to fix water quality issues tied to Oskar Blues. For the more than year and a half, Brevard has repeatedly been found in violation of water standards at the waste-water treatment plant on Wilson Road.
The state fined the city for violating the plant's discharge permit. Mayor Harris says it's a zero interest $8.9 million loan from the federal government to rehabilitate the nearly 30-year-old waste water treatment facility.
Oskar Blues spokesperson Anne Fitten Glenn commented about the move by email to News 13 saying: it will benefit the community and support continued growth here.
Mayor Harris agrees, the financing is bigger than beer.
We wanna make sure we meet all regulatory goals as well as make room for growth do this will allow that, Mayor Harris said.
Harris says there's still a chance those fines from state will be reduced. City council must still vote on whether to accept the loan.
