（Former Hokkaido Takushoku Bank Otaru Branch）
Nitori Art Museum (former Hokkaido Takushoku Bank Otaru Branch) - once the venue at which writer Takiji Kobayashi worked as a banker. The vaulted ceiling in the foyer that reaches up to the second floor is supported by 6 impressive ancient columns. The fourth floor displays Japanese paintings by Taikan Yokoyama, and Gyokudo Kawai, while the third floor displays Western art by Japanese artist Ryusei Kishida and other artists from around the world. On the second floor wooden sculptures by Koun Takamura and his disciple are displayed; the basement floor is an Art Nouveau Art Déco Glass gallery.

Japan Trip: Bank of Japan Museum learn about Japanese money Hokkaido 99
Sakaimachi Street (Sakaimachi Dōri) is an attractive, preserved merchant street in central Otaru. It lies near by city's canal area. During the development of Hokkaido in the late 1800s and early 1900s, Otaru flourished as a port city, and many trading and shipping companies constructed impressive Western style buildings in the city center to house their shops and offices.
Many of the buildings along Sakaimachi Street have since been converted into cafes, restaurants, souvenir shops and museums. There are a few glass workshops for tourists to enjoy a hands-on experience in creating the local Otaru Glass.
Bank of Japan Museum
The Otaru branch of the Bank of Japan was built 1912. Now It was converted into a museum in 2003. This museum features a number of creative displays about Japanese money and the branch's local history, including an old vault. Visitors can feel the weight of a hundred million yen here.

Closed: Mondays (or Tue if Mon is a national holiday), Dec 31 to Jan 5

Otaru - the town of crafts, fresh seafood, and history.
Elegant and delicious – Otaru!
Upon arriving to Otaru you won’t believe you’re actually in Japan. The reason for that is western architecture. Some of the main attractions in Otaru are herring mansions, Bank of Japan building and Otaru Canal preserved from the late 18th century, that might remind you of traditional cobblestone paved Europe.
All of this makes it the best town to take photos in Hokkaido!! Dress up in kimono and take the best shots your instagram followers would love!
In late 1800s Otaru was an important center of trade and fishery. Time goes by but Otaru doesn’t lose ground! Variety of seafood dishes, exceptional whiskey and sweets are the must try in this craftsmen town.
Among other rare for Japan attractions you can enjoy stained glass and music box museums.
You can’t miss Otaru Port, City Market, and a very atmospheric shopping street Sakaimachi-dori.

Summer in Sapporo | OTARY DAY TOUR | Otaru Canal and Music Box Museum
For Day 4, we visited the beautiful city #OTARU. It's known for the seafood, the #OtaruCanal, the glass shops and souvenir shops, the Music Box museum, and the colorful buildings with western influences. We went there from probably 10am till before it got dark, around 5pm. Technically spent the whole day there. We used trains for transpo and basically DIYed the tour. Everything is all walking distance from each other and their is a tourist center right at the Otaru Canal just in case google maps doesn't work. The day was very calm and refereshing. Otaru is definitely a must when you visit #Hokkaido.
