BEAUTIFUL Otaru Snow Light Path Festival - Hokkaido, Japan
The Otaru Snow Light Path Festival was the highlight of my Hokkaido trip! Magical, enchanting and beautiful ice lamps along the canal in the snow.
The Snow Light Path Festival takes place at the start of February in Otaru, a town on the coast in Hokkaido, Japan. It's only 30 minutes from Sapporo by train, so you can easily go on a day trip from Sapporo. There are 3 sites: the town centre, Asarigawa Hot Springs and Tenguyama, which is up a mountain ropeway. We went to the town centre site, which has two main areas: along the canal with the warehouses and the Temiyasen former railway line. It starts at about 5:30pm as it gets dark, with illuminations until 9pm. There's an amazing variety of snow lamps and displays. It's so creative and magical! It lasts for 10 days and overlaps with the Sapporo Snow Festival, so you can visit them both in the same trip. In 2020, the Otaru snow light festival will be on 8-16 February 2020.

Summer in Sapporo | OTARY DAY TOUR | Otaru Canal and Music Box Museum
For Day 4, we visited the beautiful city #OTARU. It's known for the seafood, the #OtaruCanal, the glass shops and souvenir shops, the Music Box museum, and the colorful buildings with western influences. We went there from probably 10am till before it got dark, around 5pm. Technically spent the whole day there. We used trains for transpo and basically DIYed the tour. Everything is all walking distance from each other and their is a tourist center right at the Otaru Canal just in case google maps doesn't work. The day was very calm and refereshing. Otaru is definitely a must when you visit #Hokkaido.

Travel from Sapporo to Otaru
The port of Otaru developed around 150 years ago as the economic center of Hokkaido during the Meiji and Taisho periods (late 19th/early 20th century). It is now is one of Hokkaido’s leading tourist destinations. The canal and the bank buildings survive today just as they were during that historic period, giving the town its distinctive nostalgic and romantic feel. Take a walk along the canal and enjoy the atmosphere of a bygone era, or go browsing in Otaru’s glassware shops - the town is renowned for its glass products! Or else sample some of the unique fish and seafood dishes served in the restaurants around the port.

Biei Blue Pond, Hokkaido, Japan
Taken on 23 November 2018
From JR Asahikawa Station, take bus no. 39 to Shirogane Hot Spring at bus stop no. 8. No need to reserve tickets in advance. Just pay on the bus upon getting off.
Fare is 1070 yen if I remember it correctly, one way, getting off at the blue pond bus stop.
If you want to catch the return bus to Asahikawa or Biei, you must explore the pond in 30 minutes or less so that you would have time to walk back to the road to catch the bus (on the other side of the road). Otherwise, you would have to wait for more than 3 hours for the next bus. If you have your own car, then this won't be an issue.
I opted to explore the pond longer and instead of catching the return bus or waiting for 3 hours or so for the next one, I walked for about 40 minutes to check out the Shirahige falls in the Shirogane Hot Spring area where a few onsen hotels and tourist information center are located. Unfortunately, that day was a public holiday hence the information center was closed. It was cold and freezing since it was snowing. There is a hotel next to it where I sought warmth instead.
I took the return bus at the hot spring area to JR Asahikawa for 1180 or 1190 yen, I think.

We stayed one night in Miyabitei Hotel Noboribetsu proceeded with breakfast and drove to Usuzan ropeway to visit the national monument in Mount Usu. Then from there we planned for Otaru however we were lost and decided last minute to go to Mitsui Shopping outlet, spent some time and did a little bit of unplanned shopping there.
Next we drove to Otaru in heavy snow and reached there at night but most of the attractions were closed so we only get to see the Otaru canal and stroll around Otaru city.

Otaru 小樽市 - JAPAN in SUMMER + Melon ICE-CREAM & KITAKARO Japanese Street Food [Hokkaido Vlog]
***Japan With Me - Episode 8 (Stream at 1080p for BETTER-QUALITY video)*** Food in Hokkaido is probably the best all around, in my opinion. This is my second day in Hokkaido island! First stop, we have met up with my cousin's friends. They used to do courses together at the university. We all went to this AMAZING JAPANESE curry soup and ordered great dishes. Too bad, I couldn't film much cuz they were camera-shy! Hahaha. You can check out my Hokkaido food video montage. The link is down below. I put all the good food video there. Anyway, it took about 1 hour from Sapporo to Otaru station. From there, you can pretty walk around the area :) Best season to visit is winter! They have a lot of light shows and festival during that time. As you can see, it was raining hard when we got there. This is summer in Japan! Hahaha but it was lovely to feel with the nature. We went to the Otaru Canal and took some photos and then continued on to see all the glass work at the souvenirs store. Pro tips, go to the big ones they have more options and cost a bit less. Make sure to inspect your items first and package it well cuz those glasses are very fragile! Anyway, we went into this shop as my cousin's love for Japanese dessert - she got the famous frozen melon ice-cream. It was very pricey but completely worth the money. The guy made it from scratch and it tasted so lovely! 800 Yen or around $AUD 10. We were shopping for more food at the end. The snack and dessert shops at the end are so good! It's called Kitakaro. Thank you very much! Don't forget to check out my other food videos and travel vlog series :) Follow me on IG @tovnadavid Kpop reaction channel Have a good day!

Sapporo Day 2 - Sapporo Beer Museum and Otaru
Low quality travel guide takes place in Sapporo the city of snow and festivals.
1. Clock Tower
The Clock Tower (時計台, Tokeidai) is a symbol of Sapporo. The building was constructed during the early period of Sapporo's development in 1878 as a drill hall of the Sapporo Agricultural College. In 1881 a clock purchased from Boston was installed.
Today, the Clock Tower serves as a museum with displays about the building's history and Sapporo on the first floor. On the second floor are displays about the clock and a spacious ceremony hall that calls to mind the simple buildings of the colonial American Midwest.
2. Sapporo Beer Museum
Hokkaido is the birthplace of beer in Japan. Sapporo Beer, one of the oldest and most popular beer brands in the country, has been brewed in Sapporo since 1877.
The Sapporo Beer Museum (サッポロビール博物館, Sapporo Beer Hakubutsukan) was opened in 1987 in a former brewery from the Meiji Period. The museum introduces the history of beer in Japan and the process of beer making. After the exhibitions, beer tastings are available at a small fee. Alternatively, paid tours are held in Japanese that include a tasting session at the end.
3. Otaru
Otaru (小樽) is a small harbor city, about half an hour northwest of Sapporo by train. Its beautifully preserved canal area and interesting herring mansions make Otaru a pleasant day trip from Sapporo or a nice stop en route to or from Niseko or the Shakotan Peninsula.
From the early days of Hokkaido's colonization in the late 1800s, Otaru served as a major trade and fishing port. It was hence chosen as the terminal station of Hokkaido's first railway line that connected the port with nearby Sapporo. Many old warehouses and former office buildings by shipping and trade companies give Otaru's city center a special character reminiscent of past decades.
