Uji The Tale of Genji City (1/3)
THIS IS THE FIRST PART OF THREE VIDEOS. Uji City [宇治市] is a city on the southern outskirts of the city of Kyoto, in Kyoto Prefecture, Japan.
Uji is located between the two ancient capitals of Nara and Kyoto. The city sits on the Uji River, which has its source in Lake Biwa. In the 4th century the son of Emperor Ōjin established a palace in Uji.
Uji is the source of Uji Tea, a very high quality Japanese tea. Shogun Ashikaga Yoshimitsu (1358--1408) promoted cultivation of green tea in the Uji area, and since that time Uji has been an important production and distribution centre of superior quality green tea (including Tsuen tea, served since 1160 and sold in what is the oldest tea shop in Japan, and possibly the world--the Tsuen tea shop).
The final chapters of the Tale of Genji are set in Uji, attracting visiting literature buffs from all over the world.
Uji has many Shinto shrines and Buddhist temples, such as the Ujigami Shrine, one of the sites listed as part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site Historic Monuments of Ancient Kyoto. The Byōdō-in (with its Amida Hall or Phoenix Hall) was built in 1053. Another famous temple is Mampuku-ji, the head temple of the Ōbaku Zen sect, built in Chinese Ming style in 1661. Also in the city is the Zen temple Kōshō-ji, constructed in 1648, with its famous Kotozaka entrance (framed with dense thickets of cherry, kerria, azalea, and maple trees, each of which dramatically changes colour with the seasons). Mimurodo-ji is famous for its abundance of purple hydrangeas, which can be viewed at night.
The city was founded on March 1, 1951. As of February 1, 2007, Uji has an estimated population of 192,921.Uji has an area of 67.55 km², giving it a density of 2,856 persons per km².
Historic Monuments of Ancient Nara / Tourist Destination Japan
Nara was the capital of Japan from 710 to 784. During this period the framework of national government was consolidated and Nara enjoyed great prosperity, emerging as the fountainhead of Japanese culture. The city's historic monuments – Buddhist temples, Shinto shrines and the excavated remains of the great Imperial Palace – provide a vivid picture of life in the Japanese capital in the 8th century, a period of profound political and cultural change.
The Historic Monuments of Ancient Nara bear exceptional witness to the evolution of Japanese architecture and art and vividly illustrate a critical period in the cultural and political development of Japan, when Nara functioned as its capital from 710 to 784. During this period, the framework of national government was consolidated and Nara enjoyed great prosperity, emerging as the fountainhead of Japanese culture.
The Cradle of Japanese Aviation: Tokorozawa Aviation Memorial Park and Museum
Being the home of what used to be Japan's first airfield, Tokorozawa can be considered the cradle of Japanese aviation. While the airfield does not exist anymore, the place is now home to Tokorozawa Aviation Memorial Park and Tokorozawa Aviation Museum. In this video, I show you what both of those are like.
Located less than an hour from central Tokyo and easily accessible by train, the Tokorozawa Aviation Memorial Park and museum are a great place to visit on a day trip.
The park has a lot of green spaces, as well as playsets, basketball courts, and other facilities, and so it's a great place to visit not only for aircraft enthusiasts but also for families and so on.
Similarly, the museum is a place worth visiting if you like aircraft, but also if you are just looking to escape the bustle of Tokyo and learn something new. Some of the aircraft you will be able to see on your visit include a NAMC YS-11, a Curtiss C-46, and a North American T-6.
Inside the museum, there are not only the actual aircraft, but also many interactive exhibits teaching the basics of flight as well as the history of aviation, and so it's a place that children will enjoy a lot too.
While most of the descriptions and other things are only in Japanese, some of them are bilingual. Regardless of that, though, you will have a great time no matter if you speak Japanese or not.
You can find details about the days the museum's open here:

Chikubushima and Nagahama - Shiga, Japan 2.1 - 6.13.16
This is my first video from my second trip to Shiga, Japan.
Some of my friends and I went to the Northeast side of Lake Biwa to visit Chikubu island (Chikubushima) and the City of Nagahama. Chikubushima is the second largest island in Lake Biwa and is home to many historical temples (the oldest is about 1,300 years old).
After we rode the Biwako-Kisen boat back to Nagahama, we visited the Kurokabe glass factory in Kurokabe square and got to create our own designs to sandblast onto glass. We also visited the Kaiyodo figure museum.
Thank you to Matsumoto-san for taking us on this trip and everyone who showed us around!

Beautiful Shiga, Japan- September, 08, 2019
At the Azuchi Castle Archaeological Museum in Shiga, Japan, my granddaughters, Jessica and Larissa, raved about the challenge of researching and answering 10 questions about the historical and socio-cultural exhibits at this museum. After answering correctly, they received, as a souvenir, a beautiful, white Jomon shell that is the name of the first culture in the Japanese archipelago. The granddaughters were happy to have the opportunity to take pictures of people who pretended to be samurai and ninjas. They also were astonished at the replica of the house where the feudal lord Oda Nobunaga lived. This feudal lord was a major figure in Japanese history in the Sengoku period by military conquests dominating almost all of Japan. With the conquest, Nobunaga accumulated great wealth and invested a great deal in art and culture. To elevate his prestige, he built grand and beautiful gardens and castles. Such true works of art. Azuchi Castle, on the edge of Lake Biwa, is considered the grandest castle in Japan, covered in gold and statues on the outside, and decorated with fixed canvas, sliding doors, walls and inside ceiling paintings by his subject Kano. Eitoku from the Kano Art School which Nobunaga sponsored. Certainly, my granddaughters remembered and learned about the Japanese history of this period by successfully accomplishing the cultural challenge. Another place, smelling of vegetation, called La Colina, caught the eye for architecture, rice crops and countless people there. Hunger tightened, and the stomach thanked with a different cuisine can contemplate the sparkling waters of Lake Biwa, as well as hear the birdsong. The afternoon was toasted with the ride at Himurehachimangu. Lovers of Japanese history will love to visit the Himure Temple (at the origin of the founding of the city) and the ruins of Hidetsugu Castle. The latter is reached by a cable car with a beautiful view of Nishinoko Lake. I have so much to thank God for another beautiful day of cultural tours here in Japan. - 08 September 2019

Room of Genji at Ishiyama-dera (石山寺) Temple, Shiga Prefecture, Japan
Room of Genji is located next the Main Worship Hall (Hondo) in Ishiyama-dera (石山寺) Temple, Shiga Prefecture, Japan.
It is said that Lady Murasaki Shikibu wrote the famous novel of the Heian Period The Tale of Genji (Genji Monogatari) in this room under the full moon light in August, 1004.
There are conflicting theories of where Lady Murasaki actually wrote this novel, one theory says that she wrote the novel at Rozanji Temple in Kyoto City, where her residence is located. However she might have spent a month at Room of Genji at Ishiyama-dera Temple and wrote parts of the Tale of Genji here.
The large temple garden behind the main Temple, has a statue of Lady Murasaki Shikibu, which is a great sight to watch.
Hope you enjoy this video.
Visions of Japan
It is with careful consideration that we have chosen Japan as our starting point for our Asia Expeditions. It is an awe-inspiring place: an archipelago of 6,500 mountainous islands spanning over 1,800 miles from north to south. Mount Fuji, Kyoto, Tokyo, Pokemon, Harajuku fashion, sumo, sushi, advanced electronics, maiko (known to us as geisha)—the images we have of Japan are many, but in truth there is far more to explore.
In the north, Hokkaido was, and sometimes still is, Japan's wild frontier, comparable to Alaska in many ways, with long winters and short, but beautiful, summers. In the south, Okinawa is a sub-tropical chain of islands, lush with greenery and lined with white sand beaches. In between, Tohoku is a beautiful, rustic land of stoic people living humbly as farmers and fishermen.
Hokuriku is the less-explored Central-Western area of Japan, known for its mountains, snow, sake, and villages of thatched roof houses. Kansai is the cultural heart of Japan, with the ancient twin capitals of Kyoto and Nara at its center—here you find 17 UNESCO World Heritage sites and hundreds of designated National Treasures”, vibrant cities like Osaka and Kobe, and smaller destinations chock full of surprises like Otsu and Koya-san. Further west, in the Chugoku region, are gems like the canal town of Kurashiki, the floating shrine of Itsukushima at Miyajima, and Hiroshima with its mark on modern history. Other destinations include the islands of Shikoku and Kyushu, steeped in history and rich in natural beauty. And, finally, there’s the metropolis of Tokyo—wonderfully overwhelming, incredibly complex, and the world's safest large city.
The photographic and cultural opportunities in Japan are immense, truly providing something for everyone. Our team guides you through the many nuances of this friendly country, teaching you the history, showing you both the hidden gems and must-see locations, and sharing with you to some of its very best restaurants.
Join us and experience the photographic expedition of a lifetime in the Land of the Rising Sun!

Life of Cats – Selections from the Hiraki Ukiyo-e Collection at Japan Society Gallery
Director of the Japan Society Gallery, Miwako Tezuka, gives us a preview of the gallery’s upcoming show “Life of Cats: Selections from the Hiraki Ukiyo-e Collection.” The show will be featuring over 130 works from one of the largest collections of Japanese wood block paintings, featuring the motif of cats. Besides highlighting some of the prints from the Hiraki Ukiyo-e collection, Tezuka also delves into the history of how cats found their way to Japan, why they are still revered there today and how they became popular art subjects.
