Oulanka National Park (Finnish: Oulangan kansallispuisto) is a national park in the Northern 129 Ostrobothnia and Lapland regions of Finland, covering 270 square kilometres (104 sq mi). The park was established in 1956 and was expanded in 1982 and 1989. It borders the Paanajärvi National Park in Russia. The first inhabitants in the area were Sami people from Lapland who lived here until the end of the 17th century, which was when they had to give way to Finnish settlers. Although hunting, fishing and later farming was the primary occupation of the people who lived there, today the most notable activity in Oulanka is tourism. From the 1930s, the Finnish Tourist Association kept boats on the river and renovated the wooden cabins found across the park for accommodation purposes. These cabins can be used free of charge by any hikers in the area, given that they follow some basic guidelines and rules regarding the state of the cabins, the wood supply, and protecting the surrounding nature.[2]
From 2002, Oulanka was the first of the two Finnish national parks which became part of World Wide Fund for Nature's PAN Parks, the other one being the Southwestern Archipelago National Park. 128
Oulanka National Park is a unique and versatile combination of northern, southern and eastern nature. The landscape is made up of pine forests, river valleys with sandy banks and rapids, and in the north of vast mires. It has a unique river ecosystem and is an example of untouched and unlogged boreal forest, close to the arctic circle, which is protected by World Wide Fund for Nature from intensive reindeer herding. The area is rich in animal and plant species, even endangered ones. Near the visitor's center is the Oulanka Research Center, which is part of the Thule Institute and was established in 1966 to facilitate research in biological and geological sciences. The research center also offers its facilities to visiting tourists or hikers, during the less busy seasons.[3][4]
Along with the rugged geography and the varied microclimates, the location of the park is also one of the main reasons for the great variety of plants and trees, with more than 500 vascular plant species in the area. There is an overlap between northern and southern species in terms of their distribution, and numerous species in the east of Finland have their westernmost outposts here. Oulanka has a nutrient-rich soil, which makes it ideal for the rare and demanding flora that is found here. The Oulanka River Valley was a very important dispersal route for various species coming from eastern Finland, after the last Ice Age. In late summer, the park is abound with billberries and mushrooms, and wild orchids are one of the most popular flowers in the area.
Riverbeds and alluvial meadows are home to rare species of butterflies, and more than a hundred different bird species have their home in the park. Most meadows are managed in a traditional manner, and reindeer herding continues to thrive within the park, although it is restricted to people from Lapland. In the park there are also rare birds such as the Siberian jay and capercaillies, which are fond of the herb-rich forests in the park. Endangered species such as bear, lynx and wolverine also find their home in Oulanka, along with moose and other game.[2]
Hiking[edit]
Oulanka is one of the most popular national parks in Finland. The most well-known Finnish trekking route, Karhunkierros (80 km), is located in the national park, and is accessible all year round. Other routes include the Pieni Karhunkierros Trail (12 km), Keroharju Hiking Trail (17 km) and other smaller nature trails such as the Rytisuo Nature Trail (5 km), Hiidenlampi Nature Trail (5 km), and the Kiutaköngäs Day-trip Trail (8 km). There are various camping areas, designated fireplaces, wooden cabins and boats which are available to the public. There are also some winter trails, which include the Rytisuo Snowshoeing Trail (7.5 km) or the Oulanka Wilderness Trail, from Juuma to Kiutaköngäs (26 km) which can be also explored with skis, snowshoes or even snowmobiles. Solo Hiking In The Arctic Circle - Lapland Finland
Late summer in Pallas-Yllästunturi National Park Finland. I had time for 4 days but made it out in 3. I would consider the 55km quite easy, the trails were very well maintained and so were the huts.
You trek along the fells which 1.9 billion years ago were the Svecofennian mountains several kilometres high. The silence that occurs when there is no wind is amazing.
You can get to the Pallastunturi visitors centre by taxi from Jerisjarvi bus stop, it is best to call for that taxi in advance. I hitched a ride with another hiker so that was lucky for me. To get there you can fly from Helsinki to Rovaniemi or Kittila. You can take a taxi direct from Kittila, but as this was the low season I had to go to Rovaniemi. You require a boat ride from the end of the trail to Hetta, there are phone numbers posted at the end of the trail to hail the boat driver. It was 5 euros cash and luckily I ran into a nice group so I didn't have to call.
You can heat water in the cabins along the way so there is no need to bring stove fuel if you are flying in. I had no need for it. Surprisingly there is 3G internet throughout most of the trek.
The best part is having a nice sauna at Hannukuru it costs 7 euros. There is a men's hour as well as a women's hour so check the timetable.
I highly recommend going to eat a traditional Finnish meal at Hettan Majatalo after the long hike! Another spot to add to your trip on the bus ride back is Levi.

Ich war wieder on the road. Diesmal nicht in den Tropen, diesmal Europa, diesmal der hohe Norden. Skandinavien. Finnland. Sehr dünn besiedelt. Im Winter ewige Nächte. Im Sommer ewige Tage. Niemals wirklich warm. Tundra, Taiga, Moore und Seen soweit das Auge reicht.

Saana - the most popular mountain in Finland
One of Finland's best known fells, or barren and stony hills, is Saana, located in the small village of Kilpisjärvi. It is visited by tens of thousands of tourists each year, and about 25,000 of them climb to the top of Saana. It is an easy and fast hike, for the path leading to the top is only four kilometers long.
The route starting from the Kilpisjärvi hiking center is marked with signs. Depending on the season, the beginning may be somewhat damp, but the wooden boardwalks help keep the shoes dry.
From a distance, Saana’s landscape can look barren and lifeless, but there are many signposts along the route explaining the diversity of the northern nature. There are some very rare plant and insect species on the slopes, and therefore a part of the area is a protected as a nature reserve.
To help with the ascent, stairs are built on the route. Here are Finland's longest stairs: 745 steps, or just over two kilometers. However, these wooden stairs are already history; During the summer 2019, new stairs with the granite stones will be completed.
Saana's peak is over 1,000 meters above the sea level, so even in mid-summer there is snow and ice in the shadows. The weather can be windy and cold, so be sure to bring warm and windproof clothing with you.
The scenery rewards a persistent hiker. Big and small lakes along with rivers glow in blue and the landscape opens in every direction wide and uninhabited. On the horizon one can see the snow-capped mountains of Sweden and Norway. From the middle of May till the end of July, midnight sun illuminates around the clock, so basically one can climb to the top at any time. However, it is good to remember that even if the sun does not fall, the temperature will easily drop below freezing, as the average temperature in the hottest month of July is just under 11 degrees Celsius.
Around the area there are many different hiking trails. For example, the distance to the border of the three kingdoms is 11km, and the highest summit in Finland, Halti, is about 55 km away. There are also many waterfalls along the road leading to Norway, such as this Rovijoki waterfall, which is just under 30 km from Kilpisjärvi and is also worth a visit.

1. Blekinge.
Welcome to Blekinge! It's a little enchanting and beautiful destination with surprisingly close to all destinations. Did you know that the sun also shines a little more hours than other places in Sweden? Well, that makes your stay even better. 2. Jokkmokk.
Way up in the north of Sweden, above the Arctic Circle, you’ll find Jokkmokk, where Sweden’s indigenous Sami people have roamed the vast expanses of Lapland for centuries and where you’ll find the World Heritage site Laponia. Thousands upon thousands of trails make the area perfect for hiking, while the small town is known for its Winter Market, where you can shop for Sami handicrafts, or enjoy the local food and music. Also make sure to check out the Jokkmokk Alpine Garden, which is bursting with alpine plants.
3. Delsjön.
Delsjön consists of two coherent lakes, Stora Delsjön, and Lilla Delsjön, located in eastern Gothenburg, in the Delsjöområdet nature reserve. They serve as a reservoir for the city, receiving water from the Göta River. At the shore of Stora Delsjön, there is a popular beach. The Delsjö area is home to a nature reserve, big lakes, and stunning woodland. A very short trip from the city center, this is where you go to calm down in nature for a walk, swim or a canoe trip. The lake Stora Delsjön offers a big beach and you can also swim from rocks and bathing platforms. If you're sporty fellow hiking trails and jogging tracks starts from the Skatås fitness center.
4. Tree Hotel.
Living in a tree house is the dream of many a child but in Harads, Sweden you’ll find Tree Hotel, a grown-up version that will blow your childhood fantasies away. Inspired by the 2008 Swedish documentary The Tree Lover, the village of treehouses are suspended four to six meters in the air and each one is unique. From the reflective room to the UFO treehouse, most rooms sleep four to six people and are designed to not just reflect nature but to be fully integrated into it.
5. Kebnekaise.
Part of the Scandinavian Mountains, Kebnekaise is Sweden’s highest mountain, with two peaks. The southern one, which is glaciated, stands at 2 097.5 meters above sea level, while the northern peak, which is ice-free, is just a smidgen shorter, at 2 096.8 meters. The mountain is close to Kiruna and Kungsleden, the hiking trails that run between Abisko and Nikkaloukta. Due to some very inclement weather, a warmer weather visit is recommended and the glacier should be avoided for those who don’t have experience with mountain ice – fatal falls are not unheard of.
6. Kalmar Castle.
Kalmar Castle is found in the town of Kalmar in the ancient province of Småland, which has been inhabited for more than 800 years. Built over the course of more than a decade in the 13th century, the castle was rebuilt in its current design in the 16th century and is considered one of the most significant examples of northern European fortifications in the Renaissance. Archeologists have found traces of ancient burials from the Stone Age, some of which are on display in the castle.
7. Fulufjället National Park.
Fulufjället National Park is a virtually untouched nature area in the southern part of the mountain range. The mountain rises in the landscape as a plateau that has steep sides and is flat on top. No reindeer graze here, so the mountain heath is covered with a thick carpet of lichen. The Njupeskär waterfall is the highest in Sweden, cascading a total of 93 meters with a free fall of 70 meters. For thousands of years, the water has chiseled out a deep canyon. Most of the visitors come to see it. From the top of the falls, you have a fantastic view of the canyon and the landscape.
8. Luleå.
Luleå is the heart of northern Sweden with big city amenities and small-town neighborhood. A real winter wonderland with white expanses and a summery island city that tops the sun league tables year after year. Luleå combines the fascinating nature with culture, shopping, entertainment, good accommodation, and good service.

Nachdem wir unser Camp am Fluss Oulankajoki errichtet haben, sind wir neugierig. Wir haben große Lust den finnischen Dschungel um uns zu erforschen. Zwischen Fichten, Birken, Mooren, Wasserfällen und Seen begegnen wir Rentieren, Wintergoldhähnchen, Haselhühnern, Birkhühnern, Fischerleuten und zwei Elchen. Wir teilen die Feuerstelle mit einem australischen Pärchen. Mücken und Gnitzen machen uns in der kühlen Luft oft das Leben schwer - trotzdem, wir genießen das einfache Dasein: wandern oder Safari mit dem Auto, fotografieren, was vor die Linse kommt und die weite Ruhe der finnischen Taiga. Dazwischen dreht sich alles um das warme Lagerfeuer und das Essen darauf, ich lerne die Grenzen meiner Campingausrüstung kennen, Lektionen für später.

Hiking in Finland - Evo Nature Reserve documentary
If you are planning to go hiking in Finland, the Evo Nature Reserve and hiking area could be one of the very good options.
One of the largest continuous forest areas in Southern Finland is the Evo Nature Reserve and Hiking Area in the municipalities of Hämeenlinna and Padasjoki. Although the area is located quite close to large city centers, one can enjoy the clean nature and calming silence in a very diverse landscape.
In its current form, the hiking area was established in 1994, but Evo's history as a valuable nature destination started over a 160 years ago, when in 1856 the Russian Emperor's Senate signed to establish the Evo crown park to preserve this beautiful forest area.
Evo's terrain offers the hiker a beautiful forest scenery mingled with ridges and lakes. Water is a very visible element and so the paths are folding between the lakes and ponds, rivers, and streams.
For those interested in fishing, it’s good to know, that basic rod and line fishing is allowed for all free of charge in all the lakes and ponds in Finland, unless clearly marked otherwise. In Evo, most of them are free, but there are few lakes and ponds where salmon has been stocked and fishing in those waters require a separate permission to be purchased.
Because the area has such a long history, you can still see some traces of past lives of old timber jacks, like the old tar and charcoal making pits, or logging cabins. At the same time, you can observe the beaver dams, hear the whistle of a hazel grouse from the creek, or compare your own footprints to those of lynx. The forest is also a home to Siberian flying squirrel, which can be occasionally spotted.
Evo is a great place for a day trip or even a few days hike. There are trails and nature walks more than 70 kms in the area, clearly marked with good signposts, route markings and info boards explaining the area's flora and fauna. There are also unmarked paths in the area, so if you are want to practice orienteering skills, you should take along a map and a compass.
Alongside the walking trails there are many resting sites, where you can enjoy campfire along with the beautiful scenery. In addition to the resting and campfire sites, the Evo area also features many dry toilets, water tabs, wells and natural springs and outdoor cooking areas with ready-made fire wood, which make the nature experience more enjoyable and easier. As custom in all Finnish nature reserves and hiking areas, there are no trash bins in the forest, since every hiker is expected to carry their own rubbish away.
If you want to stay overnight in the middle of the nature, you can pitch your tent and jump into the sleeping bag in one of the many free tent sites or lean-to shelters in the area, or if you have room in your budget, you can rent a own private shelter or logging cabin. Or if you prefer isolating yourself completely from the rest of the world, you can rent an entire lake with its villas for only private use for fishing, sauna and other recreational activities.
There is a variety of services available in the Evo area. In addition to traditional fishing, mushroom and berry picking, you can experience for example Geocaching, rock climbing, snowshoeing, canoeing and horseback riding.
Little less than fifty square kilometers of the Evo nature reserve and hiking area is not very large nature destination in the Finnish scale. For example, compared to Finland's largest Lemmenjoki National Park, Evo is more 60 times smaller. On the other hand, everything depends on a viewpoint. In comparison, almost exactly the same sized area with Evo is the Kowloon suburban in the city of Hong Kong, and more than 2 million people live in there, although it is not even a proper residential area, but full of shopping centers and restaurants.
Of course, everyone can decide for themselves, but I’d rather go to forest in Evo!

- Bear (They avoid people, but local people say they have seen them)
POPULAR ROUTE
When you are in Kattila, popular place to go is Haukkalampi (it is a small lake/pond), there is also info point and water point (it is located side of the house in the Haukkalampi). (This route you can see on this video). From Haukkalampi you can easily get short cut to the closest bus stop/main road where you can take bus back to the civilization. There are many things to see and many routes to go in Nuuksio, enjoy!)
BE PREPARED
It is good to have something to eat and drink with you. Buy it before you go there! (There is no shop!)
(Maybe it is better to stay on the roads first or you may get lost?)
(If you want to go outside the routes you need to have a map and compass)
RESPECT THE NATURE
Keep the nature clean! Do not litter (do not trash). There are no trash bin. If you smoke cigarrettes take the rest with you, off the park. Everything you take with you there, you have to take also back with you. Thank you!
HOW TO GET THERE?
Nuuksio, National Park is located only about 40 km distance from the center of Helsinki, Finland.
First take train number (name) Y, U, L, or E from Helsinki Center (Railway Station) and go to the Espoo (Espoo Center, Espoon keskus) railway station (train travel time is about 30 min) and then take the bus number 245A it will take you to the Nuuksio. The last bus stop is right one and it is named Kattila (it is part of Nuuksio) (bus travel time is about 30 min). (Winter time the bus won't take you to the end (Kattila) because the road is so bad condition).
