Jackson City, Wyoming, United States
Jackson City Wyoming 2005, wild west
Jackson Hole was originally populated by Native American tribes including the Shoshoni, Crow, Blackfeet, Bannock, and Gros Ventre. John Colter entered Jackson Hole during the winter of 1807/1808 during the return journey of the Lewis & Clark expedition. The area became a prime area for trappers and many famous mountain men traveled through the area in the early 1800s. These mountain men are responsible for many of the names in the valley including Bridger, Jedediah Smith, and Sublette. David Jackson gave his name to the valley after a winter spent on the shores of Jackson Lake.
As part of the Hayden Expedition of 1871 and 1872, William Henry Jackson took the first photographs of the Teton Mountains and Yellowstone. His photographs, along with the sketches by Tom Moran, were important evidence to convince Congress to protect Yellowstone National Park. Yellowstone National Park became the first National Park in 1872. Grand Teton National Park was created in 1920 and greatly expanded in 1950 through the generous efforts of John D. Rockefeller, Jr., who purchased and then donated over 30,000 acres.
The Town of Jackson was named in 1894. Some of the early buildings remain and can be found throughout the area of the Town Square. The Town of Jackson elected the first all-woman city council in 1920.
The first ski rope tow was built at Teton Pass in 1937 and Snow King Resort was established in 1930. Teton County now boasts three excellent ski areas including Jackson Hole Mountain Resort in Teton Village, Grand Targhee Ski and Summer Resort located on the West slope of the Tetons, and Snow King Resort.
The Town of Jackson is the county seat of Teton County and the only incorporated municipality in the region. Less than 3% of land in Teton County is privately owned. 97% of the 2,697,000 acres in Teton County are federally or state owned/managed.
In 2009, the Town of Jackson was designated as a Preserve America Community. This designation recognizes that, as a community, we protect and celebrate our heritage, use historic assets for economic development and encourage people to experience and appreciate local historic resources.

The Women of Sheridan, Wyo. | Sonja Caywood
Sonja Caywood is an artist and painter from the small mountain town of Dayton, in Sheridan County. Her expressionist pieces are an ode to fleeting Americana, and a glimpse at life in Wyoming through the eyes of an artist who grew up living her version of frontier life.
Sheridan Travel & Tourism is celebrating Sonja, and all the Women of Sheridan, Wyo., with a special multimedia program that releases each month of 2019.
sheridanwyoming.org/the-women-of-sheridan-wyo/
December 10, 2019 marks the 150th anniversary of women’s suffrage in the Equality State, and we hope you will join us in celebrating the sesquicentennial of the landmark territorial legislative decision. In 1869, Wyoming passed the first law in United States history granting women the right to vote and the right to hold public office, a historic milestone that came more than 50 years before the ratification of the 19th amendment to the US Constitution.
The State of Wyoming and the Wyoming Office of Tourism will mark the anniversary with activities, events, retreats and must-visit historic destinations that commemorate the spirit of Wyoming as the first frontier for women. Throughout the year, Sheridan Travel & Tourism will pay tribute to the icons, outlaws, storytellers and mavericks who make Sheridan their home. Each month we will feature an artist, innovator, pioneer or personality with ties to Sheridan and roots in Wyoming. Our program includes a video series, essays, podcasts, stories and more. Join us in celebrating all the Women of Sheridan, Wyo., this year, every year, and every day.
You can explore the Wyoming Office of Tourism’s Year of Wyoming Women series by visiting travelwyoming.com. And follow along as Jackson artist Lindsay Linton Buk’s groundbreaking Women in Wyoming (womeninwyoming.com) series examines the pioneers of the modern west.

Buffalo Jackson Presents: A Paradigm Shift (Mount LeConte)
High atop Mount LeConte in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park stands LeConte Lodge, the highest guest lodge in the eastern United States. From March to November the lodge hosts thousands of guests within the backcountry of the national park. During the winter months only one man lives on the mountain, the caretaker.
For the past two winters, Seth Orme has been the caretaker of the lodge. He arrives near the end of November and comes down off the mountain middle of March - just over 100 days living in the woods.

Mountain Khakis Finds Soulshine In Tahoe
The Mountain Khakis posse headed to California to explore the beautiful mountain towns of Truckee and Tahoe. When we weren’t SUPing on Lake Tahoe, rippin’ down Tahoe Rim Trail or celebrating sunsets at Donner Lake you could find us falling in love with the down town Truckee scene. The Hilltop Lodge provided the perfect perch to scope out our next escapade. We left CA with 1 question. How soon can we get back to the coffee on Jibboom Street? Oh yeah…and we made this sweet video documenting the whole thing. Enjoy!
Wyoming Range
Following the crest of the Wyoming Range is the 75 mile Wyoming Range National Recreation Trail. More of a route then a trail one end is located in Hoback Canyon near Jackson Hole, the other end in Snider Basin near Big Piney. The trail is primitive and rugged and the area more wild than many designated wilderness areas.
In 1999 the Wyoming Range Legacy Act protected 1.2 million acres of the Wyoming and Salt River Ranges from energy and mineral development. Unfortunately, 75,000 acres of existing undeveloped energy leases remain in the heart of one of the largest non-wilderness roadless areas in the lower 48 states.
On August 20-22, 2010 Forrest McCarthy mountain biked the length of Wyoming Range Trail. Starting at the Bryan Flats in Hoback Canyon Forrest followed the Wyoming Range National Recreation Trail all the way to Snider Basin. On the southern end of the range he chose a higher route than the official trail and followed the crest of the range over Mount Coffin and Wyoming Peak.
