OUR LADY OF SALVATION - FINAL VIDEO AVP
History of the Devotion to Our Lady of Salvation
Every year, during the month of August until September, devotees from all over the Bicol Region visit the shrine of the Lady of Salvation in Joroan. The last Saturday of August is traditionally reserved as a special day of veneration wherein pilgrims would walk in a procession for 9 km from the St. Lawrence Church of Tiwi to the Diocesan Shrine in Joroan.
The history regarding the statue of Our Lady of Salvation and the Marian devotion centered on it rely heavily on the written accounts, based on existing traditions, of the first parish priest of Joroan, Rev. Fr. Lamberto S. Fulay (1919–1935), in his booklet An Kasaysayan Kan Ladawan Ni Birhen de Salvacion. According to the written accounts of Fr. Fulay, it all began in the year 1770, when a certain haciendero named Don Silverio Arcilla assigned a tenant named Mariano Dacuba in one of his vast estates in Joroan (formerly known as Cagnipa). On a certain day, while Dacuba was clearing the hacienda, he chopped off a big Calpe tree. After several hours to his suprise He found out that the leaves did not wilt and maintained its life and freshness although already severed in the base for a period of time. He informed his landlord Don Arcilla about it and the latter consulted the Fria pastor of Buhi of what could be done with it. The friar pastor of Buhi urgently called a sculptor named Bagacumba to have an image carved from the Calpe trunk found by Don Arcilla's tenant. Three (3) Statues were produced out of the tree - Nuestra Señora de Salvacion (Our Lady of Salvation) now in Brgy. Joroan of Tiwi; San Antonio de Padua (St. Anthony of Padua), and Nuestra Señora de Soledad (Our Lady of Sorrows) — Both are now in Buhi, Camarines Sur specificaly in Brgy Poblacion and Brgy. Tambo. Before, Joroan was under the jurisdiction of Buhi during the Spanish colonial period. On August 25, 1776, the image of the Lady of Salvation was lent to Joroan with the condition that the residents construct a chapel at the center of the barrio. Consequently, a certain Sotera Cababag was assigned as the chapel's Hermana Mayor who will take care of the image.
THE 1853 AGREEMENT
The huge Calpi tree was found in Joroan, but the owner of the land, Don Arcilla, was a native of Buhi. Moreover, the Calpi trunk was given by Don Arcilla to the parsh priest of Buhi, who in turn commissioned a sculptor, who is also from Buhi, to carve the image of the Lady of Salvation from it. Thus, Buhi is the rightful owner of the image. However, on January 21, 1853, an agreement between Buhi and Joroan will permanently cement Joroan's claim to the image. Representing Buhi were its parish priest, Fray Antonio Guadalajara and its Gobernadorcillo, Mariano Buenaflor; while the barrio lieutenants of Joroan represented their people. In accordance with the agreement, Buhi will give up all its rights in the image if the people of Joroan made an offering of fifty pesos, and an additional twenty-five pesos for the bell.
BOUNDARY DISPUTES
During the late 19th Century, a territorial dispute arose between the provinces of Ambos Camarines and Albay. The case centred on issue of whether Joroan belonged to Buhi of Ambos Camarines, or to Tiwi of Albay. The argument of Captain Vera of Albay however, was based on Joroan’s proximity to Tiwi. Vera won the case thus, Joroan was annexed by Tiwi, Albay.
THE TYPHOON AND DISPUTES
In 1805, a strong typhoon hit the area where a small simple shrine was built to shelter the image. So they moved the image temporarily to Tiwi until such time that the place reconstructed completely. But the devotion to the Virgin were established in Tiwi. Conflict rises between to devotees, one Joroan and the other was the Tiwi devotees. In 1918, an assembly was conducted with the participation of the members. They agreed to turn Joroan into another parish and built a new shrine to a sixteen-hectare land. When the it was completely constructed in September 15, 1919. The image was finally returned to Joroan on November in the same year.
CORONATION
On December 8, 1975, Bishop Teotimo Pacis of the Diocese of Legazpi formally declared the Virgin Mary with the title of Our Lady of Salvation as the heavenly patroness of Albay. In 1976, the Diocese formally celebrated the Bicentennial Jubilee of its patroness. One of the projects during the Bicentennial was the completion of the shrine. The original design of the shrine was the handiwork of Juanito Pelea of Tiwi, but was later redesigned and finished under the supervision of Fidel Siappo of Legaspi City. After its completion, Bishop Pacis blessed the shrine on August 21, 1976. In August 25 of the that same year, as a culmination to the Bicentennial year, Archbishop Jaime Cardinal Sin of Manila crowned the Lady of Salvation while the shrine in Joroan was proclaimed as a Diocesan shrine.

a video for a virtual Flores de Mayo pilgrimage on:
Philippines: A Hard Knocked Life
The Philippines suffers from high youth joblessness, with 1.46 million young Filipinos unemployed in 2010. The MDG-F targeted disadvantaged youth in Masbate, Antique, Agusan del Sur, and Maguindanao -- provinces with high levels of poverty, migration pressure and school drop-out rates, where the Millennium Development Goals are least likely to be achieved. The programme worked on two fronts: improving policies on youth employment and migration, and increasing access to decent jobs for young men and women through public-private partnerships, more inclusive basic education, and life skills training and career guidance, including on safe migration, vocational training and entrepreneurship.

Philippines the Beautiful -- Pagbabalik by Asin
This is a story of a lovely Filipina from the Philippine countryside who has to go to school in Metro Manila. Unable to make both ends meet, she has no better option but to try the red light district. It helped her dream to go overseas for greener pasture within reach.
In no time, her U.S. tourist visa was approved and before she knew it, she had a job with a decent pay as a nursing aide and eventually earned immigrant status. Earning enough money abroad doesn't mean helping her family back in the Philippines of their financial needs is a sure thing. Modern lifestyle abroad made her spending lavishly that seems like a necessity, worse than her life in Metro-Manila. She even had a second job.
One day, she decided for a long visit to the Philippines with enough money on hand to try everything that she had never experienced earlier in her life. Unfortunately, she met a Manila hustler looking for a victim exactly just like her and she fell prey. Turning nights into days, she became an instant common figure of the malls, discos, bars and eventually became a nightmare of every parent, an addict to drugs.
Bad fortunes started trailing her and got closer to her side when calamities struck her hometown and devastated all of their properties. On top of that, her parents became sick and brothers became alcoholics to her disbelief. The parents' only wish to her is to pull herself up with wisdom and praise God despite all of their setbacks.
She needs more money now more than ever, the same thing that her boyfriend was also longing from her. Her guardian angel, as patient as ever, hinted her that God is always there to turn to. She passed by so many Churches, typical in many places in Manila yet she wouldn't go in. She paused many times and thought, I tried it before but it didn't help much. But who else should she turn to, her idiot boyfriends? She hit the crossroad and felt very confused and vulnerable. Would she go in or go the other way?
At some other point, she met a rich flamboyant Makati playboy. She opted for the easier way - with him and forgot all about the wisdom that her parents taught her. With her more sophisticated profile as a 'balikbayan,' or stateside, she blended very well in the jet set communities of Makati and Ortigas and she was enjoying the night life more than ever with a dream come true. The Makati playboy turned out to be the same as the hustler she first met but in better attire. She added another page to her life but with the same title. Her misery outweighs all the good times.
Feeling so humiliated and besieged, she left to say goodbye not just to him, not just to her circle of friends, but to the whole world. She passed by Baclaran Church and saw thousands of women walking with their knees to the tabernacle. With one last tear from her eyes and whatever energy still remained in her, she decided to try literally, the last thing in her priority list and there she went, towards the door of the miraculous Redemptorist Church of Baclaran. She can barely hear over the thousands of women in their tears asking for the intercession of the Blessed Mother to pray for their needs. She then followed the crowd, knelt, and started to move towards the image of Our Lady of Perpetual Help. She felt better about it and at the same time felt an urge in her to talk to Jesus Christ for forgiveness.
She rode a taxi to Quiapo Church and again saw thousands of Filipino faithful on their knees. But this time, she knelt, did it without hesitation and never felt as sorry for her sins, truly as ever in her whole life. Then she asked Jesus on the Crucifix if He can still forgive her. To her astonishment, she saw Jesus with a smile on His face so compelling, she felt like floating in the air. She took that positively and left the Church. On her way home, she passed by Manila Bay that happened to be on a sunset. She never appreciated that beauty so much in her whole life until that day, and she started praying to the Lord for guidance in her new beginning, for strength to regain the wisdom that her parents taught her.
Temptations and booby traps abound our society but it's our duty to protect the gift that God gave us. Life is not just full of miseries. It's filled with two opposing forces, good or bad and punishment or reward. It's up to us to know the difference and pick the right one, the path to wisdom that precedes a strong faith on God. St. Augustine reminds us that, We must pray as if everything depends on God and work as if everything depends on us.
