I drove through North Carolina's Outer Banks. This is what I saw.
Did you know North Carolina's entire coast is made of islands?
In this video, I headed to the lower outer banks, made of barrier islands, south of Wilmington, North Carolina.
We visited Pleasure Island, home to Carolina Beach and Kure Beach. This island, as well as others along the North Carolina coast, was hit hard by many hurricanes in the last three years, including Hurricane Dorian, Hurricane Florence, and Hurricane Matthew.
Along the way, we saw beach homes which are used for summer homes as rentals, some of the shops and places to eat. There isn't a lot on this island - and perhaps 10,000 people live here.
This channel talks about America, different states, education, travel, geography and what it's like to live in different places in America.

Windy day on the Outer Banks of North Carolina
First time I have been to the beach all week. Just been too cold! But today I stopped at Epstein Street in Nags Head. It is windy so this is loud...sorry about that. We are expecting a nor'easter tomorrow.
NC Highway 12 Cape Hatteras National Seashore - Outer Banks, NC Part 4
Afternoon drive along one of America's most scenic highways... NC Route 12 along the Cape Hatteras National Seashore. This is Part 4 of a 9 part video. Enjoy a virtual driving tour from beach access just south of the Temporary Bridge toward Rodanthe, NC as well as the sights and beauty of Hatteras Island. This video was filmed on my Sony HD Handycam during my annual trip to the Outer Banks on May 31, 2013.
I do not own the music in my video. If the video goes silent, I apologize. YouTube has copyright problems where unless they're making money for the music in my video, I can't have it play on the car's radio in the background of my video. Anyway, enjoy the video. Thanks for watching!

In this part of the roadtrip, we discovered the Outer Banks. We stayed in the charming town of Manteo on Roanoke Island which is located in a somewhat central location of this area. From there we could discover the beaches, the swamps or Jockey's Ridge State Park with it's amazing Sahara-like sand dunes. This is also where the first flight took place by the Wright brothers at Kill Devil Hills. Read more of the Outer Banks:
This area was so remote, it even has it's own dialect:
This drive takes us out on the banks to Rodanthe where you can find Serendipity house from the Richard Gere movie 'Nights in Rodanthe'. It since had been moved to higher ground and restored and you can see a picture of it at the end of the video where I've included a few photos, or read this article with the story:

Residents who chose to ride out Hurricane Irene in the Outer Banks of North Carolina say so far the storm isn''t as bad as feared. (Aug. 27)
Michael Walton, Southern Shores N.C. Resident
So far it hadn''t been too bad, but this sand kicking off the beach is rough. I don''t mind the water as much as the sand kicking.
Stephan Monto, Kill Devil Hills, N.C. Resident
I guess we''re lucking out pretty good on the storm. It looks like this building is losing some siding, I got a little bit of water in my apartment but not bad.

Outer Banks, NC | 10K Road Trip Vlog Day 30
We spent two days exploring the Outer Banks of North Carolina. We've heard amazing things about the islands from friends and locals, so we had to check it out for ourselves. And it did not disappoint!
From the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse and Bodie Island Lighthouse to the beaches and beautiful sunrises and sunsets, this was an unforgettable experience!
We camped at the Oregon Inlet Campground which is a great location for a few reasons. First, it's close to town. Just a 10-minute drive to Nag's Head and all the restaurants and amenities there. Second, it's on the beach, but protected by dunes. You walk up over the dunes right onto the beach. And third, it's inexpensive. At the time of this video (June 2017), it was only $28/night. We recommend staying here. Check out availability here:
We recognize that our experience in OBX is different from usual. Most people rent a giant beach house with their family and spend a week doing family excursions like mini-golf and the high ropes course. We, however, do not have any family here and we are on a pretty tight budget, so we did all the free and inexpensive things like camping, hanging out on the beach, and visiting lighthouses.
Here are the timestamps for the things we did and places we went to visit in Outer Banks, NC:
0:46 - Setting up Camp at Oregon Inlet Campground and exploring the beach
2:23 - Bodie Island Lighthouse (and kites)
4:36 - Sunrise on the Outer Banks
5:16 - Stars and Milky Way pictures from the beach
5:32 - Exploring another beach
6:09 - Cape Hatteras Lighthouse (climbing to the top - Isa's scared of heights so tell her how awesome she is for going up to the top!)
9:42 - Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge
11:06 - Jennette's Pier and Aquarium
11:29 - Exploring another beach and saving a jellyfish
12:22 - Jockey's Ridge for sunset (absolute must-do!)
This is Day 30 and 31 of our 10,000 mile road trip across the US, but honestly our day count is getting a little fuzzy, so I'm just calling this Day 30 to keep it simple.

10 Minute Tourist: The Outer Banks of North Carolina
Take a trip to the Outer Banks to see Cape Hatteras, including the famous lighthouse. Also you'll visit Kitty Hawk, where the Wright Brothers launched the Age of Aviation, and Fort Raleigh, site of the Lost Colony. We finish with a trip through the beautiful Elizabethan Gardens.

Around the Outer Banks, NC
This is a video of my recent road trip to Nags Head, N.C. It includes the area sights, including Jockey Ridge State Park which is home to Kitty Hawk Kites, a hang gliding school. I took some ground launch hang gliding classes and actually landed on my feet a few times...but if you don't land on your feet, the dunes are a soft landing.

Storm Surge & Erosion in Outer Banks From Maria
(27 Sep 2017) Maria regained strength and became a hurricane again Wednesday, pushing water over both sides of North Carolina's Outer Banks and taking its time to slowly turn away from the U.S. Atlantic coast.
No injuries have been reported, but the surge of ocean water washed over eroded beaches, flooding properties and state Highway 12, the only road through the narrow barrier islands of Hatteras and Ocracoke.
No ferries were moving, cutting off access to Ocracoke, and with the highway flooded at high tide, any travel on Hatteras remains hazardous, Dare County Emergency Management Director Drew Pearson said in an email. He said the worst problems were on Hatteras Island, where more than 10,000 visitors left under an evacuation order, but hundreds of local residents were allowed to stay.
The National Hurricane Center said an Air Force Reserve reconnaissance aircraft measured Maria's top sustained winds at near 75 mph (120 kmh), with higher gusts. Its center was about 165 miles (265 kilometers) off Cape Hatteras at 11 a.m.
While Maria's most punishing hurricane-force winds remained offshore, tropical storm-force winds extended for as much as 230 miles (370 kilometers) from the center, churning up the surf on both sides of the islands. The hurricane's forward speed is just 6 mph (9 kph), so the storm was lingering before swinging out to sea.
On Hatteras, a fine rain fell Wednesday, with patches of blue sky occasionally showing through. Police set up a check point to block all traffic except for residents and reporters. As the winds picked up, waves crashed up to and beyond ocean-front homes between the communities of Rodanthe and Avon, where the water has washed under waterfront homes and onto side streets since Tuesday at high tide.
