⁴ᴷ⁶⁰ Singapore Walking (Marina Bay Sands | Merlion | Padang)
Welcome back to another episode! In this video, we take a walking tour around iconic landmarks in Singapore. We start our journey from City Hall MRT Station, down towards the Padang, into Merlion park and its picturesque view of the Singapore Marina Bay Sands and ArtScience Museum before ending at the nearby luxurious Fullerton Bay Hotel.
It is a high likelihood that you have seen images of Singapore’s national icon, the mythical Merlion with the head of a lion and the body of a fish. The Merlion has two significant components; the body symbolizes Singapore's humble beginnings when it was called Temasek, meaning 'sea town' in Old Javanese. Its head represents Singapura, or ‘lion city’ in Malay, from which Singapore is derived from.
Today, you can glimpse this legendary icon at Merlion Park. Spouting water from its mouth, the Merlion statue stands tall at 8.6 metres and weighs 70 tonnes.
This icon is a ‘must-see’ for tourists visiting Singapore, similar to other significant landmarks around the world. It was unveiled on 15 September 1972 to welcome all visitors to Singapore, before being relocated in 2002, 120 metres away from the original position to where it stands in Merlion Park today, in front of Fullerton Hotel and overlooking Marina Bay. This is also the place for taking the Merlion Water selfie. The park also houses a smaller Merlion statue. Known as the ‘Merlion cub’, it stands at 2 metres tall and weighs three tonnes.
Interestingly on this Singapore Walking Tour, we also pass by the Padang, where Singapore is getting ready as a venue for their annual celebration of independence, better known as National Day around here. The Padang is already all decorated with the huge words Majulah Singapura on the former City Hall. Take a look at the preparations for #NDP19!
We then walk pass Victoria Concert Hall and Anderson Bridge, coming to Merlion Park where we have the iconic view of Singapore's Marina Bay Sands (aka Singapore Boat Hotel). Marina Bay Sands is owned by the Las Vegas Sands corporation and at its opening in 2010, it was billed as the world's most expensive standalone casino property at S$8 billion. Here, you can also catch a brief glimpse of the Singapore Flyer, which although bigger than the London Eye, is not really that much of an attraction, although there are great views of the Singapore city skyline.

History and engineering combine as NDP returns to the Padang
The National Day Parade is returning to its birthplace, the Padang. It is also the first time the parade will be held there since 2015. One of the first things that will strike spectators and viewers is the sheer presence of the stage, which measures 110 metres by 60 metres. Under the seating gallery, there are 11 stages to cater space for 1,000 performers at any point in time.

Padang, Singapore
The Padang is an open playing field located within the Downtown Core of the Central Area in Singapore. It was formerly known as the Padang Cricket Ground. The Padang is surrounded by several important landmarks, which include Saint Andrew's Cathedral, City Hall, the Old Supreme Court Building and the City Hall MRT Station.
Due to its prime location and historical significance, it has been used as a venue for a variety of events, including the National Day Parades in 2005 and in 2010 and in 2015 due to the first ever National Day Parade being held there in 1966, and just recently Singapore's Golden Jubilee Year in 2015. Since 1995, it has been planned that the NDP would be held there for every five years, the main venue for that major event is at Marina Bay Floating Stadium

I was invited to attend a food event with Chowzter.com in Singapore, and so my wife and I flew to Singapore. But before the events took place, we had a bit of free time, and I used the opportunity to do what is the best thing to do in Singapore: eat.
We were walking around the Chinatown area of Singapore, and I was trying to decide what to eat - not that there weren’t enough places to choose from - the problem was that there were too many decisions and too many delicious places to try, and I didn’t know which one to choose. As we were walking around the People’s Park Centre, which is kind of a tech mall, I caught sight of a restaurant called Warung Aneka Rasa – Muslim Nasi Padang, that was busy. Seeing the words Nasi Padang, which happens to be one of my favorite meals in the world, I chose to go there immediately for lunch.
Nasi Padang is a style of food from Padang on the island of Sumatra, in Indonesia. Sumatra happens to be very close to Singapore, and the entire Malay peninsula, so the food share some similarities with Malay cuisine, and there are also many people from Sumatra living in Singapore. Nasi Padang includes a plate of rice, topped with a variety of curries and dishes that are all prepared ahead of time, and ready to be ordered. To order, you just walk up to the front counter, get a plate of rice, and then tell them what dishes you want to add to the top of your rice. I got a plate of rice and added a big piece of chicken curry, plus some ikan bilis - fried anchovies and peanuts, and another dish of little fish fried with just a few stink beans - one of my favorite ingredients. Finally I also got a scoop of stir fried green beans or long beans, and then she added on a nice spoon of curry sauce over everything. Finally, a plate of Nasi Padang wouldn’t be complete without a nice spoon of sambal, or chili sauce on the side.
We got a table overlooking the road, with a nice Singapore breeze, and a nice friendly atmosphere. The restaurant was pretty crowded as it was right at the end of lunch, but we managed to find a seat. The Nasi Padang was not the best I’ve had so far, but it was very good, and since it had been a while since I had eaten Nasi Padang is was really good. I think Warung Aneka Rasa – Muslim Nasi Padang is an excellent restaurant to try Nasi Padang in Singapore when you are in the Chinatown area.

Excellent Nasi Padang at Geylang Serai Market Food Centre
Geylang Serai market and food centre is a great place to eat Nasi Padang and other Malay and Indonesian foods in Singapore. Get more details here:
Geylang Serai is a wet market and food hawker center that’s known in Singapore for having a high concentration of Malay and Indonesian food available, and I think most of the stalls are halal. You’ll find all sorts of different things to eat at the food court area, including biryani, a number of nasi Padang curry stalls, and many other dishes. I came to the hawker center specifically for the Nasi Padang, and I wanted to try a place called Sinar Pagi Nasi Padang.
Luckily when I arrived, the line to eat at Sinar Pagi Nasi Padang, wasn’t too long, so I jumped in line and I was soon ordering my plate of Nasi Padang. A meal of nasi Padang is originally from Padang in Sumatra, but since Singapore is so geographically close to Sumatra, the dishes from Padang area very popular and there are many Sumatrans living in Singapore. Sinar Pagi Nasi Padang is known for serving some of the finest Nasi Padang in the city, and so I was happy to eat there.
Before digging into my rice and curry, I started off with some satays from Alhambra satay. Unfortunately, the satays were way too sweet for me and sort of dried out.
But luckily, the Nasi Padang made up for the satays. I got some jackfruit curry, chili eggplant, and the main dish, beef rendang, a famous variety of curry made with coconut and lots of fragrant spices. Along with a variety of different sambal chili sauces, it was an incredibly plate of curry and rice, Padang style.
If you’re looking for excellent Indonesian food and Malay food in Singapore, Geylang Serai Market and Food Centre is a great place to be.
Address: #02-137, Geylang Serai Market & Food Centre
Open hours: 9 am – 10:30 pm daily, but closed two weeks on Monday and Thursday
Prices: It depends on how many dishes you take, but my plate was $7 SGD
How to get there: Take the MRT to Paya Lebar, and the food centre is just a 10 minute walk from there.
