Public Librarians' Chat: Management and Supervision of Volunteers, 9/13/2018
During this webinar three presenters shared information and their personal experience with supporting volunteerism on a local and/or statewide level. Strategies for providing volunteers with guidance and motivation and the importance of regular affirmation were shared.
Katie Abbott, the Executive Director of Serve Alaska shared information about the role Serve Alaska plays in supporting volunteerism in Alaska, upcoming training opportunities for volunteer coordinators and how libraries and other organizations in Alaska are using AmeriCorps and VISTA volunteers to build capacity and expand the reach of services to underserved communities.
Jennifer Treadway, United Way of SE Alaska Board Member and a previous AmeriCorps volunteer shared her unique understanding of what organizations, such as libraries can do to provide volunteers with meaningful work and make them feel supported and valued.
Carla Lehn, author of From Library Volunteer to Library Advocate: Tapping into the Power of Community Engagement published in May 2018, talked about the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) grant Get Involved: Powered By Your Library, a four state project (Arizona, California, Idaho and Texas) focused on providing public libraries with volunteer resources, (a subscription to Volunteer Match and training) with the goal of increasing the use and retention of volunteers in public libraries.

The Sacramento Public Library Authority is governed by a Joint Exercise of Powers Agreement between the County of Sacramento and the Cities of Citrus Heights, Galt, Isleton, Elk Grove, Rancho Cordova, and Sacramento. The purpose of the Sacramento Public Library Authority is to provide public library services that provide open access to diverse resources and ideas that inspire learning, promote reading, and enhance community life to all citizens in our member jurisdictions.
The Sacramento Public Library Authority's governing board comprises representatives from each member jurisdiction based on population and includes all five members of the County Board of Supervisors, five council members from the City of Sacramento, two members from the City of Elk Grove, and one member from each city council for the Cities of Citrus Heights and Rancho Cordova. The Cities of Galt and Isleton are co-represented by a single council member currently from the City of Galt, with the City of Isleton serving as the alternate. The Library Director serves as the Authority's chief executive officer and as secretary of the governing board.

UZA -- We are United Zombies of America, a small family-owned and operated business and we just recently received our LLC, even though our initial grassroots organization broke ground in the spring of 2012. We are an organized, professional, performing group of actors. We enjoy being Zombies but we can and have done several other characters as well. We not only act, but we have done many other types of services while we work with and for others. A few of us have been doing this type of service and employment for many decades now. Our skills and experiences are varied to say the least. We are also more importantly a family friendly and appropriate for all ages group. We know that Families that SCARE together STAY together!
UZA is a professional acting group. Our family's initial, core group was trained by professionals from Universal Studios, Disney, Rocky Point's Haunted House, The Haunting Haunted House at Halloween Express, Thirteenth Floor, and House of Torment. Some of us have been trained by certain professionals with these groups and have even been trained on how to train others to perform. We have had theatrical training and we have acting backgrounds as well. We are NOT a Zombie Only Business. We Do Love Zombies, but we also Love old-time movie monsters, as well as gothic, sinister, horror characters, and most horror genre.
We have done the following things: acting in professional haunted houses for the past five years, comic cons, AZ Thespians 2013, Thrill The World Phoenix, AZ -- dancing to Michael Jackson's Thriller at the State Fair 2013, various character walks, music videos, commercials, movies -- including Cowboy Zombies just released on DVD 2014, promoting various businesses and cons, training, teaching, panels, various makeup for selves and others, DJ-ing events and dances, photography -- taking pictures and being in pictures, security, volunteering, and charity work as well as so very many other things.
So we do the following: makeup and special FX, acting and improvisation, training/classes/panels on various topics, promoting and advertising, movies/commercials/videos, comic cons, haunted houses, photography, costuming, art, security, social media, DJ-ing, parties and carnivals as well as all kinds of events, volunteering, and charity work. We are currently developing products to sell at our booth and online as well.

First Amendment Audit of the Cherry Point Refinery
This video is a first amendment audit originally filmed on Saturday January 4th 2020 in Bellingham Washington (about an hour north of Seattlle) with Emerson ICU. We went to the Cherry Point oil refinery, which is owned by British Petroleum, to see how they would react to journalists and if would respect our first amendment right to film in public.
We arrived on scene and within 2 minutes we had a security guard trying to bullshit us by telling us the easement was public property. I had a minor camera malfunction so to see this interaction jump over to Emerson IUC's page and be sure to tell him NewsNowSeattle sent you. Since they could not bully/bullshit us out of the area they decided to do constant drive bys and stationary surveillance.
We were there for just over 45 minutes and counted approximately 20 drive bys.

Geronimo one who yawns; June 16, 1829 -- February 17, 1909) was a prominent leader of the Bedonkohe Apache who fought against Mexico and the United States for their expansion into Apache tribal lands for several decades during the Apache Wars. Geronimo was the name given to him during a battle with Mexican soldiers. His Chiricahua name is often rendered as Goyathlay or Goyahkla in English.
After an attack by a company of Mexican soldiers killed his mother, wife and three children in 1858, Geronimo joined revenge attacks on the Mexicans. During his career as a war chief, he was notorious for consistently urging raids upon Mexican Provinces and their towns, and later against American locations across Arizona, New Mexico and western Texas.
In 1886 Geronimo surrendered to U.S. authorities after a lengthy pursuit. As a prisoner of war in old age he became a celebrity and appeared in fairs but was never allowed to return to the land of his birth. He later regretted his surrender and claimed the conditions he made had been ignored. Geronimo died in 1909 from complications of pneumonia at Fort Sill, Oklahoma.

ASU Libraries Hidden Treasures: The Alianza Hispano Americana Collection
In this episode Project Archivist Xaviera Flores meets with Chicano/a Research Collection Curator Nancy Godoy and introduces us to a very special collection that is available to the public for the first time: the Alianza Hispano Americana Records Collection.
Alianza Hispano Americana was established in 1894 and was the first Mexican American Mutual Aid organization. The main goal of this organization was to provide health and life insurance to the community, and its members also promoted civic virtues and acculturation and provided social activities. The Alianza Hispano Americana Records collection includes membership files, which have rich information for genealogical research, as well as some photographs and artifacts, which we see samples of in the video.
The Alianza Hispano Americana Records Collection is part of the Chicano/a Research Collection, the largest Mexican-American archival collection in the state of Arizona.
The project is funded by the Andrew W. Mellon foundation and administered by the Council on Library and Information Resources (CLIR)

What we do know is that before the passing of former President George H.W. Bush, he filed a 211-page document detailing funeral instructions for the U.S. Army Military District of Washington to follow.
Following his death, former President George H.W. Bush’s casket was first taken to Washington, D.C., where his body lay in state in the U.S. Capitol Rotunda, providing an opportunity for legislators and other government dignitaries, along with the public, to pay their respects.
According to his request, President George H.W. Bush wanted specific things for his funeral. His days as a pilot during World War II may be why he asked specifically for an aerial flyover of fighter jets by the U.S. Air Force in the missing man formation. The fly-bys will take place during his state funeral, as well as his final interment.
George H.W. Bush also provided instructions to forego the presidential fanfare and stated that he does not want Hail to the Chief: to be performed during his final interment at the George H.W. Bush Presidential Library and Museum in College Station, Texas.
