베트남 남쪽 끝에 위치한 호치민시는 동남아시아에서 급부상하는 도시 중 하나에요. 아직도 많은 사람들은 사이공이라 부르는 호치민시는 베트남 최대의 도시이자 경제적 수도라 할 수 있죠.
호치민시는 밤이나 낮이나 활력이 넘치고 사업가적인 에너지가 느껴지는 곳입니다. 거의 100년 동안 식민 지배를 받았고 전쟁도 겪었지만, 지금은 예전에 적이었던 사람들까지도 따뜻한 미소로 반기는 도시가 되었지요. 스쿠터, 오토바이, 자동차 등이 끊임없이 지나가는 분주한 거리는 신기하면서도 젊은 열정이 느껴질 정도지요.

호치민시는 마치 미래가 와있지만 동시에 과거도 그리 멀지 않은 곳에 있다는 느낌이에요. 프랑스 식민지 시절에 지어진 넓은 대로에는 첨단 고층건물들이 들어서 있고, 자스민 향기가 나는 사원의 바로 옆에는 세련된 바가 자리하고 있지요.
호치민시 여행에서 방향 감각을 제대로 익히시려면 68층 건물인 비텍스코 파이낸셜 타워에 올라가 보세요. 사이공 스카이데크에서 더위도 식히고 360도 전망을 감상하실 수 있어요. 호치민시에는 9백만 명 이상이 살고 있습니다. 이곳의 역동적인 길거리 풍경도 이국적이지요. 호치민시는 여러 번호별 군으로 나뉘어 있는데요, 거의 모든 관광명소가 1군에 밀집되어 있습니다.
동코이 거리 지역에 가보세요. 20세기 초 베트남이 프랑스령일 때 뤼 카티나로 불리던 이곳은 당시 굉장히 세련되고 우아했다고 해요. 지금도 사이공 중앙우체국 등의 멋진 건물들이 많답니다. 우체국은 지금도 여전히 운영되고 있고요.
근처에는 호치민시 노트르담 성당과 오페라하우스도 있는데요, 지난 시절의 음악이 들릴 것만 같아요. 호텔 컨티넨탈 사이공과 같은 옛 프랑스식 호텔은 분주한 거리에서 벗어난 오아시스처럼 느껴져요.
호치민 시립박물관도 구경해 보세요. 지난 세월 동안 호치민시가 어떻게 변해왔는지 자세히 살펴보실 수 있어요. 또한 베트남 역사박물관에서도 베트남의 과거를 엿보실 수 있죠.
동코이 거리는 호치민시의 역사가 살아있는 곳이면서 또한 호치민시에서 일어나는 최근 경제 성장의 중심지 역할도 하고 있습니다. 식민지풍 건물에 자리한 수많은 매장에는 명품 브랜드가 즐비하고 새로 지어 매끈한 쇼핑센터에는 세련된 부티크와 커피숍이 있죠.
호치민시에서 가장 큰 시장인 벤탄 시장에 가시면 보다 전통적인 호치민시의 모습을 보실 수 있어요. 여기에는 없는 게 없지만 꼭 흥정을 하셔야 해요.
호치민시의 분주한 거리에서 맛있는 베트남 길거리 음식을 먹어보는 경험도 절대 놓치지 마세요. 쩔런은 호치민시의 활력을 느낄 수 있는 또 다른 곳이에요. 지금은 세계 최대 규모의 차이나타운 중 하나로 알려져 있지만, 사실 베트남 전쟁 시 번성하던 암시장으로 유명했답니다.
현지인들은 미국 전쟁이라 부르는 베트남 전쟁은 20세기에 가장 논란이 된 전쟁 중 하나였고 지금도 많은 사람들은 이 전쟁을 제대로 이해하기 위해 이곳을 찾아오고 있어요.
매년 50만여 명이 찾는 이곳의 전쟁 박물관은 전쟁의 참혹한 실상을 그대로 보여주고 있어요. 베트남 암흑 시기의 또 다른 상징인 통일궁에도 가보세요. 1975년 북부 베트남군의 탱크가 이곳의 문을 부수고 쳐들어왔을 때 세계 최초로 TV 방송되던 전쟁은 막을 내리게 되었지요. 마지막 대피 장소로 쓰였던 옥상에도 올라가보고 이 운명적인 날 이후 거의 그대로 보존되고 있는 통신실도 구경해 보세요.
무거운 역사 이야기는 잊고 이제 타오단 공원으로 가보세요. 시내 중심의 오아시스와 같은 곳이에요. 아니면 100년 역사를 자랑하는 호치민 동식물원에 가보세요. 싱그러운 초록이 만발한 빈꿔이 유원지도 차로 30분 정도의 거리에 있습니다. 이 유원지는 옛날에 메콩강 삼각주가 어땠는지 보여주기 위해 만들었다고 해요. 향내가 가득한 사원에 가시면 호치민시의 또 다른 에너지가 느껴져요.
베트남은 공식적으로 종교가 없는 국가지만 사실상 불교, 유교, 도교 등 오랜 종교가 많답니다. 옥황사에 가시면 도교에서 내세의 문지기로 여겨지는 옥황상제에게 기도하는 사람들을 보실 수 있어요. 해가 질 때쯤 되면 호치민시의 유명한 루프탑 바에서 활기 넘치는 도시의 풍경을 감상해 보세요. 시끄럽지만 정말 역동적이에요. 호치민시는 전쟁으로 더 많이 알려진 도시였지만 오늘날에는 21세기 아시아의 힘찬 맥박을 느낄 수 있는 곳이랍니다.
