In the early afternoon of June 11, Gregg Cawlfield became the first person to call 911, with concerns about a small structure fire near Highway 83 and Shoup Road in Black Forest, Colorado.
That small structure fire would later turn into Colorado's most devastating forest fire in Colorado's history.
Due to record setting heat and high winds, the fire quickly spiraled out of control. By the next day, a 55 square-mile-wide evacuation zone was issued. On June 13, Sheriff Terry Maketa announced that nearly 360 homes were lost and 15,000 acres had burned. Two victims were found dead in their garage, assumed to have been attempting to escape the flames.
As of June 15, the County Sheriff's office reported that the fire was 55% contained and nearly 500 homes were destroyed in the flames. So far, it is reported it will cost around $3.5 million to repair the damages caused by the fire.
