Mark Jones has been a resident of Columbia since 2001. He chose Columbia as his home because of its unique combination of small town community atmosphere and big city culture and entertainment.
Mark serves on the Boone County Community Services Advisory Commission, which works with local organizations that train and retrain workers, help families learn how become financially independent and help seniors retain their quality of life. He has found his work on the Commission to be rewarding.
Before moving to Columbia full-time, Mark attended Central Methodist University in Fayette, Missouri. While living in Fayette, Mark came to see how important Columbia is as a hub for much of Mid-Missouri. Both the Columbia Mall and nearby shopping area and The District with its many locally owned shops and restaurants are destinations for visitors from surrounding towns. Those visitors bring much needed revenue to Columbia and its local small business owners.
Mark and his wife Sharon enjoy living in a city with a vibrant University culture. Attending Football and Basketball games or cultural events on campus add to the quality of life found in Columbia. With three main campuses in town as well as several satellite campuses from other institutions, higher education is a vital part of Columbia.
Mark is currently a staff member at the Missouri National Education Association, where he helps advocate that children and families deserve quality public schools. Prior to joining MNEA he owned his own consulting company helping business and non-profit clients. His wife Sharon, an attorney, own a home on the south side of Columbia.

MKT Segment 1
Part one of eight in my presentation on the MKT railroad.
The MKT trail is a popular hiking and biking trail in Columbia, Missouri. It starts at Flat Branch Park at 4th and Cherry, and continues, not only through 9 miles of the college town, but throughout the state of Missouri connecting with the larger Katy Trail (MKT Nature and Fitness Trail). The Katy Trail follows the Missouri River, traveling the same path as the railroad that was there for over ninety years before it was converted into a nature trail in the Rails-to-Trails movement.
The Missouri, Kansas, and Texas Railroad, shortened to the MKT and nicknamed the Katy Railroad, ran through Missouri, Kansas, and Oklahoma down to Texas. This development began after the Civil War when the potential of the Midwest was realized (Missouri, Kansas, and Texas Railway 1). John D. Rockefeller was one of the many to realize that railroads were going to become the official mode of agriculture transportation (Poole). In 1891, he signed a certificate for 100 shares in the MKT Railway, supporting the MKT in the race to connect the Indian Territory with the rest of the United States. Because of his participation, the MKT beat Union Pacific in the race (Scripophily.net).
Columbia was put on the MKT line for the resources the town offered. The creeks -- Hinkson, Perche, and Flat Branch -- lead to the Missouri River Valley (Christisen). Flat Branch Creek was a boon for Columbia residents and the area around the creek was Columbia's original settling spot. They abandoned Smithton, a town a half-mile west of the Columbia area, to get water from a well in the Flat Branch bottoms. In 1899 the MKT officially had a line in Columbia, bringing in passengers and supplies from St. Louis and Kansas City through McBaine. The main purpose of the railroad transportation was to bring coal to the university power plant on what is now Stewart Road, and passenger service (CBT Staff). The train brought in papers from Kansas City and St. Louis to go along with local city papers like The Missourian or The Columbia Daily Tribune (Hunt). The idea that passenger service would widen university admissions due to student transportation was a major contributing factor to resident support. Still, many objected to the placement of a railroad in the educational center that is Columbia, fearful that it would bring an undesirable element to the community. (Christisen).
Columbia residents may have had a point. Criminal activity seemed to go along with railroads. Jimmy Doyle, a retired conductor from Boonville, recalled the hobos he would see on the train when they stopped for water to power the steam engines. The professional hobos went south in the winter and came back north in the spring. (Bailey). Thomas Hart Benton painted Regionalism depictions of American life, particularly in the Midwest. One of his paintings titled City Slums shows the railroad passing through a Kansas City criminal slum neighborhood (Benton). My great-grandfather moved to Kansas City to work on the MKT in the fifties, leaving my great-grandmother and their children behind in Indiana. My grandfather was living on the streets in a slum like this. My grandma missed him so much that she packed up all the kids and took a train right to the depot without any money. My grandpa had to quit the railroad in order to find a better paying job to support the family. I always loved this story because it showed how romantic my family could be, at least before dysfunction set in later.
The most infamous criminal from Missouri, Jesse James, was the leader of the gang to stage the world's first robbery of a moving train in 1873 (Jesse James Historical Site). Benton depicted the outlaw and his gang performing this crime (Benton). The actor Brad Pitt starred as the outlaw Jesse James in The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford in 2007 (Internet Movie Database). Pitt was raised in Springfield, Missouri. He went to the University of Missouri, majoring in journalism with a focus in advertising, but left two credits short of graduating to move to California to try out acting (IMDb). Brad Pitt is one of the most famous attendees of MU and the mere rumor of his presence on campus, supposedly visiting his old school for an Oprah interview, whipped the student body into frenzy on February 17th, 2011. The criminal activity on the railroads in Columbia was average until the Spring of 1923 when a wrongful lynching occurred due to criminal activity on the MKT railroad tracks.

OREGON COUNTRY SEATTLE / PORTLAND / TACOMA OREGON TRAIL 1920s EDUCATIONAL FILM 57504
The ‘Oregon Country’ is a silent film presented by Eastman Classroom Films (:11), and was one of a series of educational shorts made by that company for classroom use in the 1920s. It opens with shots of automobiles driving through forests, a waterfall (:34) and leads into the trails to Oregon (:47). Footage is shown of travelers in wagons drawn by oxen on the trail. On a map, a trail is shown beginning in St. Louis through Kansas City, Omaha, and the Missouri River (1:10) and this is the Lewis and Clarke route of 1805. The crossing into the platte is shown (1:52) as men on horseback and driving carriages wade through a river (1:55). In a large group, the travelers are camped for the night (2:25) and then shown attacked by Native Americans (2:38).Carriages traverse through muddy and snowy terrain along the way (2:59). Cattle and sheep were able to graze on the great plains near the Rockies (3:21). Back on the map, the Wyoming oil fields and where to find gold, silver, copper and lead are pointed out (3:49). Also drawn attention to; the Columbia Plateau (4:11), Columbia and Snake Rivers (4:16), Shoshone Hills (4:34) and Arrow Rock Damn (4:42). This damn is shown in film (4:56), with water flowing through and then crop fields (5:02).The map directs viewers to the Blue Mountain Gap (5:18), and picture shows a bridge crossing over it (5:23). The Bitter Root Pass is depicted on the map (5:33) and on film (5:38) as well. A tractor works the dry farming fields (6:16). Both of the routes on the map collide at the Dalles (6:50) and after the lower Columbia River is pictured (6:53). Fish are jumping upstream and a fisherman catches some in the rapids (7:15). A train runs alongside the river (7:38) and the winding Columbia highway follows (7:52). In Hood River County (8:11) mountains ride in the background and a town is settled in the foreground (8:35). The city of Portland is next on the map (9:01) and in footage (9:05). Extravagant floats crammed with flowers ride through the city (9:27). Viewers are then taken to Astoria (9:40) with men fishing ashore using nets (9:59). Astoria had become a canning center for Columbia River salmon (10:17). The Puget Sound area appears on map (11:24) and followed by fruit orchards (11:30). Lumberjacks hack at massive redwoods on the Western slopes of the Cascades (12:50). Then from Tacoma (13:08) to Seattle (13:28), the film concludes on Seattle's landscapes (13:28).

Declassified US Army’s Secret Human Testing Experiments On The Citizens Of St Louis USA
Declassified documents show the US Army tested radioactive poisions in Secret Human Testing Experiments On The Citizens of St Louis USA.
The Manhattan-Rochester Coalition, research on the health effects of radioactive materials, and tests on vulnerable populations without consent in St. Louis, 1945--1970
by Martino-Taylor, Lisa, Ph.D., UNIVERSITY OF MISSOURI - COLUMBIA, 2011, 838 pages; 3515886
Click & Download Document:
Lisa Martino-Taylor is a sociologist whose life's work has been to uncover details of the Army's ultra-secret military experiments carried out in St. Louis and other cities during the 1950's and 60's.
The study was secretive for reason. They didn't have volunteers stepping up and saying yeah, I'll breathe zinc cadmium sulfide with radioactive particles, said Martino-Taylor.
Army archive pictures show how the tests were done in Corpus Christi, Texas in the 1960's. In Texas, planes were used to drop the chemical. But in St. Louis, the Army placed chemical sprayers on buildings and station wagons.
Documents confirmed that city officials were kept in the dark about the tests. The Cold War cover story was that the Army was testing smoke screens to protect cities from a Russian attack. The truth, according to Martino-Taylor was much more sinister.
It was pretty shocking. The level of duplicity and secrecy. Clearly they went to great lengths to deceive people, she said.
By making hundreds of Freedom of Information Act requests, she uncovered once-classified documents that confirm the spraying of zinc cadmium sulfide.
Martino-Taylor says the greatest concentration was centered on the Pruitt-Igoe housing complex, just northwest of downtown St. Louis in the Carr Square neighborhood. It was home to 10,000 low income people. An estimated 70 percent she says were children under the age of 12.
This was a violation of all medical ethics, all international codes, and the military's own policy at that time, said Martino-Taylor.
In 1994, then-Congressman Richard Gephardt (D-St. Louis), asked the Army to open its records and explain the St. Louis testing.
At the time Rep. Gephardt said, We want to make sure nothing went on that would harm anyone, and that all the fact are out on the table.
Documents released in the 90s showed the Army placed sprayers on a former Knights of Columbus building on Lindell and in Forest Park. The Army always insisted the chemical compound was safe. Martino-Taylor believes documents prove otherwise.
There is a lot of evidence that shows people in St. Louis and the city, in particular minority communities, were subjected to military testing that was connected to a larger radiological weapons testing project, she said.
For the first time, she links the St. Louis testing to a company called US Radium, a company notorious for lawsuits involving radioactive contamination of its workers.
US radium had this reputation where they had been found legally liable for producing a radioactive powdered paint that killed many young women who painted fluorescent watch tiles, said Martino-Taylor.
While the Army admits it added a florescent substance to the zinc cadmium compound, details of whether it was radioactive remains secret.
Documents uncovered to date indicate the Army never conducted follow-up studies to see whether the compound caused long term health issues.
In 1972, after years of crime, poverty, and decline, the government destroyed the Pruitt -Igoe housing complex.

LECTURE: Jeannie Kenmotsu, Ph.D. - September 5, 2019
Japanese Prints Abroad in Portland: The Mary Andrews Ladd Collection
Jeannie Kenmotsu, Ph.D., Japan Foundation Assistant Curator of Japanese Art, Portland Art Museum
Japanese woodblock prints were met with an enthusiastic audience abroad in the late-19th and early-20th centuries. In Europe and the United States, tens of thousands of prints were bought and sold, exhibitions and record-breaking auctions staged, and a new passion kindled for private collectors. Most of what we know about early American print collecting has been focused on the East Coast—donations that were the basis for the world-class museum collections in Boston, New York, and Chicago. Lesser-known but just as significant was the donation of the Mary Andrews Ladd collection of Japanese prints to the Portland Art Museum in 1932. Drawing on the Museum’s archives, period records, and the collection itself, this lecture explores this transformational gift of nearly 750 Edo-period (1603–1868) woodblock prints, and expand the story of early Japanese print collecting in the United States.
