As Stephanie Ho reports from Beijing, one of China's most accomplished and successful artists uncovered the joy and sadness that have come with changes at every level of Chinese society, when he returned to his small hometown in the northeastern part of the country.

Full Frame Close Up: Xu Bing, Contemporary Chinese artist
Get a sneak peek at what we're working on for season 4 of Full Frame!
Renowned artist Xu Bing takes us inside his latest project, Dragonfly Eyes.
Language is not typically the channel of communication for visual artists trying to reach a broad audience. In fact, many strive for universal comprehension by negating language all together. Xu Bing is anything but typical.
The Chinese-born contemporary artist not only embraces words, but also likes to toy with the viewer’s understanding of language.
Xu Bing is known for his unique printmaking and calligraphy work. One of his most famous techniques is Square Word Calligraphy, where he molds English words into forms resembling Chinese characters. He first developed this technique after moving to the United States from China in the early 1990’s.
It’s not just the audience’s perceptions that Xu Bing likes to challenge. He also pushes his own artistic boundaries. In 2017, Xu Bing made his directorial debut with Dragonfly Eyes, a film composed entirely of surveillance footage from closed-circuit cameras all across China.
Full Frame caught up with this innovative artist to learn more about his sources of artistic inspiration and his current projects.

拙政園裡的中國畫家 The Chinese Brush Painter in The Humble Administrator’s Garden
Painter Chen Rudong started painting when he was 9 years old and had his first solo exhibition at 23. For over forty years he has been living in Suzhou and focusing on painting. He is a significant figure in the Wu School of Painting. He once had a studio in The Humble Administrator’s Garden where he painted and enjoyed the views all day long. That’s something many only dream about. But he fell seriously ill in his 30s, and that’s when he began to truly understand the spirit of Chinese brush painting, and ever since his painting became different.
