Pakleni Islands
The Pakleni or Paklinski islands are located off the southwest coast of the island of Hvar, opposite the entrance to the Hvar city harbor. The name is popularly translated as Hells' islands (pakleni: hellish), but it originally derives from paklina, an archaic word, from which pakleni too is derived, that means tar, and in this case refers to the pine resin once used to coat ships that was harvested on these islands.

20. Sailing Hvar and the Pakleni Islands | Sail Croatia | sailing around the world
This week we leave Scedro and sail towards the Pakleni Islands in Croatia, where we enjoy a peaceful and beautiful anchorage before heading to the buzzing Hvar town on the island of Hvar.
We are able to anchor just outside the town centre and re-stock Kawai with water, diesel and food before we get to enjoy our time in Hvar town. We visit the Spanish Castle, soak up the buzzing atmosphere and eat some pizza.
After spending a night in the Hvar anchorage we shelter from some strong winds in a calm anchorage just outside the main town. The winds improve and it's time to leave and we sail to the island of Brac to pick up Jase's parents.
About us:
Our names are Jason and Tracey and we traded our house, cars, business, job and security for freedom, adventure, travel and living simply amongst nature and the seas on our 45 foot Hanse 445 sailing boat, Kawai.
We don't know exactly where the winds will take us at this stage but over the next year we hope to sail to Turkey, Greece, Montenegro, Croatia, Italy, Spain, Morocco, Gibraltar, Canary Islands and then across the Atlantic Ocean.

Hvar & Pakleni Islands Croatia
A beautiful island of Hvar of south Dalmacia near to Split city. It is about 1 hour by boat and in this area is awesome diving. One of most popular places in Croatia with big history. I would like to share my experiences in this short film.
I did over 700 dives in this area and spend 3 season diving here to catch all interesting sea creature to show you what everything it's possible to see in Adriatic sea.

SUBSCRIBE: - Hvar, Croatia, a walking tour of the town. Vic Stefanu, vstefanu@yahoo.com. Hvar, a Croatian island in the Adriatic Sea, is best known as a summer resort. Highlights of the port town Hvar include its 13th-century walls, a hilltop fortress and a main square anchored by the Renaissance-era Hvar Cathedral. The island also features beaches such as Dubovica and inland lavender fields. Boat excursions serve the nearby Pakleni Islands, which have secluded beaches and coves.
Croatia is an Eastern European country with a long coastline on the Adriatic Sea. Encompassing more than a thousand islands, it's also crossed by the Dinaric Alps. Its inland capital, Zagreb, is distinguished by its medieval Gornji Grad (Upper Town) and diverse museums. The major coastal city Dubrovnik has massive 16th-century walls encircling an Old Town with Gothic and Renaissance buildings.

Hvar is the central Dalmatian city, rich in history and located on the island of Hvar. Location is considered to be the sunniest of the whole Adriatic and many described it as a fairytale town with its architecture, beautiful nature and mild climate.. It has always been the center of island tourism, with its centuries-old tradition.
As in the other places on the island - the best way to experience Hvar is to approach it from the sea, by a small boat that can enter even the hidden places. The place itself is a living monument whose walls are a must-see, so we suggest to visit the Hvar Fortress, the Cathedral, the theater (oldest in Europe), Franciscan Monastery, City Hall from the 15th century (as the only remnant of the former Governor's Palace), etc... Given that is on our routes we offer a longer stay in Hvar, upon request we will recommend a traditional Dalmatian fresh meal in a local tavern or a restaurant. In recent years, Hvar has become an unavoidable trendy jet set place, visited by many famous Hollywood and local stars and celebrities from politics and sports.

This is HVAR. Croatia's hilltop fortress town.
We visit the incredibly beautiful Croatian Island of Hvar- and explore Hvar Town. We spend the day walking around and exploring the streets and waterfront. We come across the Hvar Cathedral, or Cathedral of St. Stephen. We then make the long trek up to the Fortress of Hvar that looks over the entire town. We finish our day with locally made sandwiches while on the waterfront.

The city of Hvar is a unique fusion of luxurious Mediterranean nature, rich cultural and historical heritage, and mundane, tourist present.It is situated in picturesque nature, facing the southern, side of the world that has given it all Mediterranean attraction and cheerfulness; facing sea, that gave it splendid and repeatable history, Hvar is an inexhaustible treasury of the scenery, atmosphere and adventure.Its name derives from the Greek name for island and town, that stood where today Stari Grad (Hvar became an island’s centre in 13th century) stands - PHAROS.

St. Stephen’s Catedral: The Cathedral is dedicated to St. Stephen, a pope and martyr, the protector of the Diocese and the city of Hvar. The renaissance bell-tower of the Cathedral and Hvar’s other bell towers (St. Mark, Franciscan and the ruined one of St. Venerande) are considered to be the nicest ones in Dalmatia. Hvar’s Cathedral preserves many valuable items and paintings of famous painters like Stefano Celesti, Palma Junior and the Spanish painter Juan Boschettus, but the most renowned painting is definitely Madonna, an example of the proto-Venetian art and one of the oldest in Dalmatia originating back in 1220.
Hvarska Pjaca (Square of St. Stephen), Cathedral of St. Stephen and episcopal palace, Hvar. If you visit Hvar, all the streets will lead you to Hvarska pjaca (Hvar’s square), the centre of city’s public and social life and the largest square in Dalmatia. The eastern side of the square is surrounded by the Cathedral of St. Stephen that was built on the foundations of an early-Christian church from the 6th century and that acquired its present appearance in the 16th and 17thcentury.
Fortress in Hvar Town: Looming high above the town and lit with a golden glow at night, this medieval castle occupies the site of an ancient Illyrian settlement dating from before 500BC. The views looking down over Hvar and the Pakleni Islands are magnificent, and well worth the trudge up through the old-town streets. Once you clear the town walls it's a gently sloping meander up the tree-shaded hillside to the fortress – or you can drive to the very top.
