Places to see in ( Strasbourg - France ) Palais de Rohan
The Palais Rohan in Strasbourg is the former residence of the prince-bishops and cardinals of the House of Rohan, an ancient French noble family originally from Brittany. It is a major architectural, historical, and cultural landmark in the city. It was built next to Strasbourg Cathedral in the 1730s, from designs by Robert de Cotte, and is considered a masterpiece of French Baroque architecture. Since its completion in 1742, the palace has hosted a number of French monarchs such as Louis XV, Marie Antoinette, Napoleon and Joséphine, and Charles X.
Reflecting the history of Strasbourg and of France, the palace has been owned successively by the nobility, the municipality, the monarchy, the state, the university, and the municipality again. Its architectural conception and its iconography were intended to indicate the return of Roman Catholicism to the city, which had been dominated by Protestantism for the previous two centuries. Thus the prelate's apartments face the cathedral, to the north, and many of the statues, reliefs and paintings reflect the Catholic dogma.
Since the end of the 19th century the palace has been home to three of Strasbourg's most important museums: the Archaeological Museum (Musée archéologique, basement), the Museum of Decorative Arts (Musée des arts décoratifs, ground floor) and the Museum of Fine Arts (Musée des beaux-arts, first and second floor). The municipal art gallery, Galerie Robert Heitz, in a lateral wing of the palace, is used for temporary exhibitions. The Palais Rohan has been listed since 1920 as a Monument historique by the French Ministry of Culture.
The apartments on the piano nobile today form a part of the Musée des arts décoratifs. The chambers of the prince-bishops and cardinals of the House of Rohan are divided into the grand appartement (display space, facing the river, or south) and petit appartement (living space, facing the inner court and the cathedral, or north), as in the Palace of Versailles.
The Musée des beaux-arts (Museum of Fine Arts), on the first and second floors of the palace, is the successor of the Musée de peinture et de sculpture (Museum of painting and sculpture), established in 1803 and entirely destroyed by Prussian artillery shelling and the subsequent violent fire during the night of 24–25 August 1870.
The Musée des arts décoratifs (Museum of Decorative arts) is on the ground floor. It was established in its current form in the years 1920–1924, when the collections of the Kunstgewerbe-Museum Hohenlohe, originally established in 1887, were relocated in the stables wing adjacent to the palace apartments.
The Musée archéologique (Archaeological Museum) is in the basement. The former archaeological collections of the city had been entirely destroyed, along with the municipal library, during the Siege of Strasbourg in 1870. A new collection was started in 1876 on behalf of the Society for the preservation of the historical monuments of Alsace (French: Société pour la conservation des Monuments historiques d'Alsace, German: Gesellschaft zur Erhaltung der geschichtlichen Denkmäler im Elsass).

Palais des Papes, gothic palace of Europe
This was the most fortified palace of the time since the pope left Rome to be more secure, and with 10-foot-thick walls, it was a symbol of power.
The Palace of the Popes was built stark and strong, before the popes knew how long they'd be staying. Due to its immense size, the Palais was also where the general organisation of the Church began to change.
Avignon residents, many of whom had come from Rome, spoke Italian for a century after the pope left, making the town a cultural oddity within France.

Strasbourg is the capital city of the Grand Est region, formerly Alsace, in northeastern France. It's also the formal seat of the European Parliament and sits near the German border, with culture and architecture blending German and French influences. Its Gothic Cathédrale Notre-Dame features daily shows from its astronomical clock and sweeping views of the Rhine River from partway up its 142m spire.
Strasbourg is the perfect overture to all that is idiosyncratic about Alsace – walking a fine tightrope between France and Germany and between a medieval past and a progressive future, it pulls off its act in inimitable Alsatian style. Tear your gaze away from that mesmerising Gothic cathedral for just a minute and you’ll be roaming the old town’s twisting alleys lined with crooked half-timbered houses à la Grimm; feasting in the cosiest of winstubs (Alsatian taverns) by the canals in Petite France; and marvelling at how a city that does Christmas markets and gingerbread so well can also be home to the glittering EU Quarter and France’s second-largest student population. But that’s Strasbourg for you: all the sweeter for its contradictions and cross-cultural quirks.
Strasbourg is located on the west bank of river Rhine, and has occupied a strategic position in the Upper Rhine Valley since prehistory. It was already settled from 1300 BC onwards, and developed into a Celtic market town named Argentorate. The Romans conquered the area around 12 BC, and renamed it to Argentoratum, and it developed into an important military base or castra, stationing the 8th Legion from 90 AD onwards.
Today, Strasbourg is the ninth largest city of France with nearly half a million inhabitants in a metropolitan area spanning across the river into the German city of Kehl, on the eastern bank of the Rhine. The city itself is the seat of the Council of Europe, the European Court of Human Rights, the European Ombudsman, the Eurocorps, the European Audiovisual Observatory and, most famously, the European Parliament[33], which also holds sessions in Brussels.
Strasbourg is a popular tourist destination primarily thanks to its beautifully preserved and pedestrian-friendly city centre, which can easily be explored on foot or by bicycle. Some areas however, especially around the cathedral, attract large tour groups, especially in Summer and during the Christmas holidays. They are better explored outside peak hours, in the evening or early morning. Alot to see such as :
Cathédrale Notre-Dame, Place de la Cathédrale
Église Saint-Thomas (St. Thomas Church)
Musée de l'Œuvre Notre-Dame
Palais Rohan
Musée des Beaux-Arts
Musée des Arts Décoratifs
Musée Archéologique
Musée Alsacien
Musée Historique
Musée d'Art Moderne et Contemporain
Musée Tomi Ungerer
Musée Zoologique
Maison Kammerzell
L'Opéra
Petite France is the name given to the small area between the rivers, just south of the Grande Île. It is home to some of Strasbourg's prettiest and most photogenic streets and buildings, with half timbered townhouses (maison a colombages) leaning out over the narrow cobbled streets. Petite France resembles Colmar (a city an hour south), with picturesque canal and half-timber houses.
Christmas markets can be found in many places, but the most important and beautiful are place Broglie and place de la Cathédrale, although they are crowded. They are the best places to drink hot wine (vin chaud) and to eat Christmas cookies (Brädeles).

A tour around Rohan Palace in Strasbourgh France
Examine historical artifacts and artworks in the museums of this 18th-century palace, which once hosted Louis XV and Marie Antoinette.
Rohan Palace is a grand residence with stately façades and an ornate interior. Once a royal abode, it now houses three fascinating museums as well as an additional gallery. Spend a day browsing the exhibits and galleries of the Museum of Fine Arts, the Archaeological Museum and the Museum of Decorative Arts.
Before entering, examine the building’s elaborate window-lined façade, which looks out over the River Ill. Behind it lies the Strasbourg Cathedral with a tall spire that can be seen from much of the Grande Île.
Walk through the large archway and enter the main building to see its majestic halls. Learn about the intriguing history of the palace, which was commissioned by the bishop of Strasbourg in 1731. Since then, the mansion has hosted many famous residents and guests, most notably Marie Antoinette in 1770.
The basement of the building houses the Archeological Museum. See items from the collection of 18th-century historian Johann Daniel Schöpflin and inspect objects from the Paleolithic Era, the Bronze Age and Roman times.
On the ground floor is the Museum of Decorative Arts. Peruse its lavish Baroque and Rococo chambers and admire exquisite porcelain, gold and silver pieces from the Alsace region. The floor above has the Museum of Fine Arts, which includes paintings attributed to master artists such as Botticelli, Giotto and Piero di Cosimo.
A side wing of the palace houses the Robert Heitz Gallery where temporary exhibitions are often held. Check ahead to see if anything is showing here during your visit.
Each museum has an admission fee and closes on Tuesdays.
Rohan Palace is located to the north of the River Ill in the center of the city. Some of Strasbourg’s famous landmarks, including Strasbourg Cathedral and several other important churches, are nearby. To get reach the palace, ride the tram to the Langstross Grand Rue or Broglie stations. Both are less than 10 minutes’ walk away.

Châteaux of the Loire Valley
The Châteaux of the Loire Valley are part of the architectural heritage of the historic towns of Amboise, Angers, Blois, Chinon, Montsoreau, Nantes, Orléans, Saumur, and Tours along the Loire River in France. They illustrate Renaissance ideals of design in France.
By the middle of the 16th century, King François I had shifted the center of power in France from the Loire back to the ancient capital of Paris. With him went the great architects, but the Loire Valley continued to be the place where most of the French royalty preferred to spend the bulk of their time. The ascension to the throne of King Louis XIV in the middle of the 17th century made Paris the permanent site for great royal châteaux when he built the Palace of Versailles. Nonetheless, those who gained the king's favour and the wealthy bourgeoisie continued to renovate existing châteaux or build lavish new ones as their summer residence in the Loire.
The French Revolution saw a number of the great French châteaux destroyed and many ransacked, their treasures stolen. The overnight impoverishment of many of the deposed nobility, usually after one of its members lost his or her head to the guillotine, saw many châteaux demolished. During World War I and World War II, some chateaux were commandeered as military headquarters. Some of these continued to be used this way after the end of World War II.
Today, these privately owned châteaux serve as homes, a few open their doors to tourist visits, while others are operated as hotels or bed and breakfasts. Many have been taken over by a local government authority, or the giant structures like those at Chambord are owned and operated by the national government and are major tourist sites, attracting hundreds of thousands of visitors each year.
