After the last election, every media story about small town America seemed to focus on the same stuff – Trump, opioids, that factory that would never reopen… But what if you went to a small town, and didn’t ask about those things… What if you went simply to ask people about their lives, without connecting their answers to those bigger media narratives… What if you didn’t ask them what they thought about some national politician or global corporation, and instead tried to find out about their future – and their past…
You go to Moundsville, West Virginia, because it teeters on the edge between prosperity and ghost town, and because it has a storybook past. It had factories that made everything under the sun – shoes, toys, glass, whips, even airplanes. It could be Flint, Youngstown or Birmingham.
You also go to Moundsville because it’s a place where people know that the ghosts of America are not only the ones that make us nostalgic for the roaring twenties, the Baby Boom and the moon landing. Thousands of years before the age of Trump and Obama, while Julius Caesar conquered Europe, Moundsville, not far from the oldest human settlement on the continent, was a commercial hub of a prehistoric trading empire.
Every day you spend in Moundsville, you reckon with evidence that empires fall and rise, that America was great two thousand years ago, and will, in different ways, be great two thousand years from now, and that maybe only the ghosts know the truth about how we got here, and where we’re going.
