Tolomei Palace, Siena, Tuscany, Italy, Europe
The Palazzo Tolomei is an imposing, Gothic style urban palace, located on Via Banchi di Sopra in the present contrada of Civetta, Terzo di Camollia of the city of Siena, region of Tuscany, Italy. The building is one of the oldest palaces in the city and was erected between 1270 and 1275 by the Tolomei family. It served as the first permanent headquarters of the Sienese commune during the early years of the Guelph era, before the construction of the Palazzo Pubblico in the Piazza del Campo, and it also functioned as a bank and private residence. It stands on the west side of the Piazza Tolomei, across from the church of San Cristoforo. The aristocratic Tolomei family for many years was associated with this parish church. On the Via Banchi di Sopra, it is a few houses south and across the street of the Palazzo Bichi Ruspoli, a few blocks north of the Piazza di Campo. The original palace of this Guelf aristocratic family was mostly destroyed by Ghibelline mobs in 1267 but was rebuilt in its current form shortly after the new Guelph regime came to power. The stone palace, with its tall first floor, mullioned windows with trefoil decoration in upper floors, was restored in the 1960s and is now home to Banca CR Firenze. Among the most notable members of the Tolomei family was Pia Tolomei, who lived in the thirteenth century. In 1295, however, she was supposendly murdered by her Guelph husband from the Maremma, who wished to remarry. Her story was popular in the 19th century as a symbol of faithfulness to principles in the face of treachery and self-interest. Gaetano Donizetti made her the subject of his tragic opera, Pia de' Tolomei. The Tolomei family also bore Saint Bernardo Tolomei and the Blessed Nera Tolomei, memorialized in the facade of the church of San Cristoforo. In front of the palace stands a column crowned with a Roman She-wolf.

Siena, a city in central Italy’s Tuscany region, is distinguished by its medieval brick buildings. The fan-shaped central square, Piazza del Campo, is the site of the Palazzo Pubblico, the Gothic town hall, and Torre del Mangia, a slender 14th-century tower with sweeping views from its distinctive white crown. The city’s 17 historic “contrade” (districts) extend outward from the piazza.
Siena is a city in Tuscany, Italy. Siena is the capital of the province of Siena. The historic centre of Siena has been declared by UNESCO a World Heritage Site. Siena is famous for its cuisine, art, museums, medieval cityscape and the Palio, a horse race held twice a year.

SIENA GUIDES part 3: 5 secrets of Siena you won't find on travel guides | TIPS TO TRAVEL IN ITALY
Hi, I am Ero! Siena is a beautiful italian city in the heart of tuscany, famous for its medieval cityscape, delicious cuisine and principally, the Palio, a horse race held twice a year, every year, in the main square, Piazza del Campo, an ancient tradition that is famous all over Italy and also abroad. Siena has lots of very beautiful places to visit, including the Duomo and Piazza del Campo, which of course you will end up seeing if you follow a common tourist guide as you are visiting the city. However, beside the touristy stuff and places, Siena hides a number of small but very interesting secrets, mostly notorious only to the people that live there. I have lived in Siena for a few years, and in my time here I have learned a lot about lots of these secrets and I made this video (and another one, check out ) to share with you these secrets. I am sure that they will be very useful when you visit Siena, or that they will convince you to come here and visit. Enjoy and let me know if you have any other questions. Also, if you visit Siena I will be happy to guide you through the city to see these secrets.
SECRETS:
00:38 THE WOLF STATUES: Siena is full of wolf statues (for example, in piazza del campo, in piazza della postierla, infront of palazzo tolomei, in the cortile del podesta, the two ones infront of the duomo and the one inside of the duomo, and others), however the wolf is notoriously the symbol of Rome, so why are they here? the legend says that one of the two founders of Rome, Remo, before being killed by his brother Romolo, had two children: Senio and Ascanio. After the death of their father, Senio and Ascanio ran away from Rome riding a black and a white horse that were provided by the gods Apollo and Diana, bringing the wolf that fed their father. They reached a hill and founded there Siena, that took the name of the older brother Senio. So, the wolf and a black and white flag became symbols of Siena. The roman and senese wolves can be distinguished by the fact that the roman one looks left, and the senese one looks forward.
01:45 THE HEADS OF PALAZZO SPANNOCHI: They are a row of heads at the top of a palace in Piazza Salimbeni, Palazzo Spannocchi. These heads were placed here in 1473, when the palace was built by the rich merchant Ambrogio Spannocchi, and represent faces of roman emperors and other illustrious characters, including Dante Alighieri
02:26 THE DAMA IGNUDA: It's a statue of a naked white woman looking outside from the window, in Via dei Rossi 123. This statue is called La Dama Ignuda and was made by the sculptor Pier Luigi Olla in 1995. The florentine commander Giangiacomo medici in 1555 led the Medici army in the conquest of Siena, and this statue represents a young woman that he took from Siena as a prize for himself (the girls is MARTINA VALENTI )
03:07 PIA DE' TOLOMEI'S STONE TAG: This one is definitely my favourite secret! It's a stone tag on the side of Palazzo Tolomei (in Piazza Tolomei), showing a verse of Dante's Divine comedy that says Ricorditi di me, che son la Pia; Siena mi fé, disfecemi Maremma that means remember me, I am Pia; Siena made me, Maremma destroyed me. Dante here is talking about Pia de' Tolomei's story (watch the video to discover it).
04:26 THE CONTRADA FOUNTAINS: They are 17 fountains sparse all over Siena, which represent the symbols of the Contradas. For more details watch my video about the contrada fountains:

Church of St Christopher, Siena, Tuscany, Italy, Europe
Church of St. Christopher is a Roman Catholic church located on Piazza Tolomei in the Northern Terzo di Camollia and contrada of Civetta in the city of Siena, region of Tuscany, Italy. Across the piazza from the church is the Palazzo Tolomei, one of the oldest buildings in the city. The Tolomei for many years were associated with the church. The original Romanesque style church with a Latin Cross layout was initially constructed in the 11th to 12th-century. Traces of Romanesque columns remain in the adjacent small cloister. During the 13th century, the cloister would host the council of the nascent Republic of Siena. It is claimed that at this site in 1260, a meeting took place between the Council of 24 and Florentine ambassadors. The latters demanded that Siena breach its walls, and allow Florentine fortresses in each Terzo. These heavy demands forced the former to decide that war with Florence was inevitable, and they dismissed the ambassadors, and prepared for war. They acknowledged the need to hire German mercenaries from Count Giordano d'Anglano, vicar of King Manfred, but lacked the funds. Upon hearing this, Salimbene Salimbeni, banker and founder of an early branch of the future Monte dei Paschi, merely walked to his nearby home, and returned to this cloister with the wheelbarrow full of 118,000 florins. The mercenaries proved essential to the Sienese victory at the Battle of Montaperti. Also at this church, it is said that in 1376, Saint Catherine of Siena was able to force a reconciliation of a bitter feud between the Maconi and Tolomei/Rimaldini families. With the feudin parties present, she entered into a trance like extasis while in prayer at an altar. The church underwent a number of modifications, most prominently after the earthquake of 1798. In 1800, a brick Neoclassical temple facade was added with four columns and tympanum, designed by Tommaso and Francesco Paccagnini. The niches flanking the entrance hold statues (1802) of Saint Bernardo Tolomei and the Blessed Nera Tolomei, works by Giuseppe Silini. The church has a Madonna and child with St Luke and Romuald (circa 1508) by Girolamo del Pacchia, a fresco of the Pietà and the instruments of the Passion by Martino di Bartolomeo, and a marble sculptural group depicting the Glory of St Christopher (1693) by Giovanni Antonio Mazzuoli. It now houses a Madonna and child by the 15th-century school of Della Robbia, a St George and the Dragon and a St Christopher attributed to either the Master of the Osservanza Triptych felt to be the same person as Sano di Pietro; and a tondo of the Madonna and child by the Master of San Pietro a Ovile.
Salimbeni Palace, Siena, Tuscany, Italy, Europe
Palazzo Salimbeni is a Gothic style urban palace located on the Piazza Salimbeni, just off Via Banchi di Sopra in the Terzo di Camollia of the city of Siena, region of Tuscany, Italy. The building, associated with an ancient mercantile family of Siena, currently houses the main offices of the Banca Monte dei Paschi di Siena, one of the oldest banks in the world. It was built in the 14th century, likely above pre-existing 12th-13th century structures. In the 19th century it was remodeled in neo-Gothic style, with detail including the merlons, the Lombard bands under them, the ogival triple mullioned windows, inspired by Siena's Palazzo Pubblico. It was further renovated by architect Pierluigi Spadolini during the 20th century. It faces a square with a statue of the local religious figure Sallustio Bandini, dating to 1882. Neighboring palaces include the Palazzo Santucci (16th century). Facing Palazzo Salimbeni, to the right stands the Palazzo Spannocchi (1470), designed by Giuliano da Maiano. South along Via Banchi di Sopra are the Palaces Bichi Ruspoli and Tolomei.

Siena walking tour in historic center
The historic center of Siena is an ideal place to take a walk. See more Siena movies in our playlist: Siena is a very livable city. It's built to a human scale covering about a square kilometer which makes it small enough that you can easily walk from one end of town to the other in a single day and see almost all of the sites in between. There's an endless variety of interesting things to see along your way. A small city, but crisscrossed by dozens of little lanes that provide many miles of picturesque strolling opportunities for the ambitious trekker. It's fun to just wander around and get a little bit lost, up and down the back alleys and then find your way back to the main lane and the major landmarks. Siena is divided in three districts corresponding to the three ridges it sits on, North, West and East, with the Campo in the middle, the main piazza. At the north end of the main shopping lane, via Banchi di Sopra, there is a pretty little square, Piazza Salimbeni, with Europe's oldest bank founded in 1472. Facing that is Siena's five-star grand Hotel Continental. It's been here over 100 years, a former palace – nice spot for a break. The next square is Piazza Tolomei, whose palazzo is the oldest private residence in town dating from the early 13th century. The piazza's a popular place for locals to hang out and watch the passing parade. This main shopping street is worth walking from one end to the other, perhaps stopping for a bite at one of the attractive little restaurants along the way. And narrow side alleys will attract you with their charms. This street was once part of Europe's most important medieval route, like an agent superhighway called via Francigena, which united northern Europe with Rome, always busy with pilgrims heading for the sacred city. Via Banchi di Sopra soon ends at the beautiful Loggia Mercanzia. Built in the early 1400s the loggia had been commercial Court of Justice and a money exchange house. This is the central intersection, the heart of downtown were Siena's three main pedestrian streets come together: via Banchi di Sopra comes in from the north, then branches off to the east becoming via Banchi di Sotto, and to the west as via di Citta. The latter two, Citta and Sotto are really one street the changes name, then change again at the fringes of town. They run along tops of the three low hills that divide Siena into its three sections. At this poi nt all three districts are joined. These three streets of the widest and busiest of the pedestrian lanes in the historic center and have many buildings from the 13th through the 15th century – palaces, churches and old civic structures. Of course you will find varying kinds of find shops and restaurants throughout their lengths, which total less than one mile altogether. This is the neighborhood for easy strolling and watching the locals in action, although it does get quite full of tourists during the busy summer season. Escape the crowds by ducking into the side alleys as we will be showing you here. You'll find that when you get off the beaten track these little lanes are a lot more residential, you're not going to see a lot of shops or restaurants but you will notice the beautiful architecture, the old brick, the arches across the alley ways. Simple sites like local out walking her dog can be pretty entertaining when you just stop and take a look and wait for something to happen. Walking on the steep hills can be a challenge for anybody, especially if you have a dog who's pulling you in the opposite direction. If you're walking down you're going to be having to turn around eventually and walk back up a hill, after all this is one of the Tuscan hill towns.

Chigi-Saracini Palace, Siena, Tuscany, Italy, Europe
The Palazzo Chigi-Saracini is a Gothic urban palace on the Via di Città in the Terzo di Città in central Siena, Tuscany, Italy. In 2014 it housed the Accademia Musicale Chigiana. It was built by the Marescotti family in the 12th century. It was the house of Count Galgano Lucarini Saracini and then it became property of Fabio Chigi Lucarini Saracini. The palace is described as a Gothic beauty with a curved facade and back courtyard. In the mid-twelfth century, the aristocratic Marescotti family of Siena, owners of a castle at the site, erected the tower that stands today next to the palace. Their emblem is visible on the trefoil windows of the facade. Subsequent reconstructions led to the Gothic structure visible now. In 1506, the Piccolimini-Mandoli family acquired the building and refurbished the palace interiors, cortile, and loggia in a Renaissance style. In 1770, the owner Marcantonio Saracini undertook a restoration of the building that lasted until 1824, when Galgano, his son, inherited it. Preserving the original Gothic façade, the castle matches the characteristic curvature of this narrow medieval street. The interior was renovated and modernized by Agostino Fantastici, and art collections were added. In 1877, after Galagano Saracini died, the palace was inherited by Fabio Saracini, who died in a hunting accident, passing the castle on to his nephew Guido. Count Guido Chigi Saracini, the castle’s last owner, restored the building’s exterior and interior with the help of architect Arturo Viligiardi. In 1932, he founded the Chigiana music academy, to which he bequeathed the building after his death in 1965.
