Palace of Priors, Perugia, Umbria, Italy, Europe
The Palazzo dei Priori is a historical building in Perugia, Umbria, central Italy. As in other Italian medieval communes, it was the seat of the priori. This magistrature was established in Perugia in 1303: the palazzo had been called the Palazzo Nuovo del Popolo to that point. During intractable civic quarrels, a podestà might be established, housed in a separate structure, the Palazzo del Podestà, of which only the Loggia added by Braccio da Montone flanking the Cathedral of San Lorenzo e San Ercolano remains. When the palazzo of this rival to the power of the Priori burned in 1534, significantly, it was not replaced, but fragments from it were incorporated into the archbishop's palace, also fronting the main piazza. The Magistratura dei Priori that was housed in the structure consisted of ten representatives of each of Perugia's main guilds from among the forty-four that existed, permitted a tenure of only two months. The money-changers, who were housed in their own adjoining quarters in the fifteenth century, had the privilege of always being represented among the Priori, and the merchants' guild was represented by two members instead of one. After the Salt War of 1540 with Pope Paul III, the Priori were renamed “Conservatori dell’Ecclesiastica Obbedienza” and, the Palazzo del Podestà having been destroyed, the Palazzo dei Priori became the seat of the Papal Legate, the new governor of Perugia. When Pope Julius III restored the Priori, the grateful Perugini commemorated him with the bronze statue next to the Cathedral. The structure commands the corner where the main artery of medieval Perugia, Corso Vannucci, enters the city's main square; a first section was constructed in 1293-97, at first as the Palatium Novum Populi, the new Palace of the People, with ten bays along the Corso and three facing the piazza. Two more bays and a grand entrance portal were added to the piazza façade in 1333-37, together with the arcaded loggia, where decrees were publicly read. Later in the fourteenth century the palazzo was extended along the Corso, with six bays and a richly carved entrance doorway worthy of a cathedral. Rising above, a tower surmounts and controls the arched access to Via dei Priori, the ancient way that descends to the Etruscan gateway, the Roman Porta Trasimena, which was Christianized as the Arca di S. Luca. A further section down the Corso was built in 1429-43, still keeping to the Gothic tripartite fenestration, to house the Collegio del Cambio, the money exchange that was the financial center of Perugia. The perimeter of the roof was originally crenellated all around, less for actual defensive purposes than as a symbol of Perugia's independence. Significantly, the crenellations were removed in 1610, when Perugia had submitted at last to papal armies. When Perugia was joined to a united Italy, the crenellations were triumphantly restored. The grand portal in the Piazza is surmounted by the city's symbols, the griffin of Perugia and the Imperial Guelf lion, in bronze; the originals were probably cast in the Arsenal of Venice, in 1274, the first European bronze castings in the round achieved since Antiquity. Above the door, strung on a bar hanging from chains the keys to the gates of Siena were triumphantly displayed, following the victory of Perugia at the battle of Torrita, 1358. The portal leads to an austere vaulted undercroft with the stairs leading to the vaulted frescoed Sala of the former council chamber of the Priori on the piano nobile; the Sala was allocated to the notaries guild in 1582, as the Sala dei Notari, when their former quarters, the Palazzetto dei Notari, on the opposite side of the Corso were partially demolished in a street widening. On the left is the entrance to the Galleria Nazionale dell'Umbria one of the most outstanding provincial Italian collections of art.

Places to see in ( Assisi - Italy ) Piazza del Comune
The Piazza del Comune , in Assisi , was the secular site of the city, surrounded by its most significant buildings, where the entire socio-political and cultural life took place: it is considered one of the most representative Umbrian medieval urban realizations. Located in the place where stood the ancient Roman Forum , dominated by the imposing Rocca Maggiore , the rectangular square begins at the end of Corso Mazzini that connects it to the Basilica of Santa Chiara . Immediately to the right you can admire the sixteenth-century fountain of the three lions, revisited in 1762 by Giovanni Martinucci .
Opened in the center of gravity of medieval Assisi, at the meeting of the arteries coming from the city gates (Cappuccini, Moiano, Nuova, Perlici, San Francesco, San Giacomo, San Pietro), we have documented its news from the beginning of the of privileged seat of popular gatherings ( platea markets or populi ). Still lacking in public buildings, the evocative towers-houses of the feudal aristocracy rose up, then replaced, with the anti-imperial struggles, by the mercantile bourgeoisie.
The site will be ennobled in 1212 , when the consuls succeeded in obtaining from the monks of san Benedetto del Monte Subasio the authorization to fix the municipal seat in the temple of Minerva , then called casalino di san Donato , giving rise, with this choice, to a symbolic continuity between the Roman city and the municipal one.
In 1228 the square was widened to the east assuming the current surface and entitled eloquently platea nova or magna comunis . Between 1282 and 1305 the Roman temple was flanked by the Torre del Popolo and the Palazzo del Capitano: on the southern side, the erection of the Palazzo dei Priori began, still home to the Assisano municipality. In the north-western side, in the twenties of the twentieth century, we proceeded to the construction of the post office building.
In the so-called pint vault of the Palazzo dei Priori, frescoed in grotesque style , it was accessed, through a small door, to the public house of Assisi pleasure , from 1500 used as a place for the bargaining of cereals. Still in the municipal building, later also home to a picture gallery, was born on March 1, 1838 the future St. Gabriel of the Addolorata , son of Sante Possenti, papal governor of the city: he received the baptism in the Cathedral of San Rufino , as St. Francis and Frederick II of Swabia .
In addition to the important monuments mentioned, mention must be made of the Zubboli bookstore (present since 1870 ) and the historic Bar Minerva, dear to all the inhabitants of Assisi who, every year, celebrate the Calendimaggio with events and parades of medieval costumes, evoking the ancient controversies between the Rivers and Nepis families.

Places to see in ( Perugia - Italy ) Piazza IV Novembre
Piazza IV Novembre is located in the historic center of Perugia , and as Serafino Siepi wrote , it is the most beautiful and most ancient square in the city, central to it. The asymmetric square opens up to the convergence of the five road axes that structure the medieval city and for its scenography has represented in every age the privileged place of urban functions: here was placed the ancient forum and there are preserved monuments connected to the plant urban planning of the Etruscan-Roman city.
Formerly the site of the ancient Roman Forum , it became the converging fulcrum in the High Middle Ages and the starting point for the five main city streets, the Gifts Streets. In the tenth century the Episcopal see was transferred to the new temple of San Lorenzo, and the square has qualified as a representative space for political and religious power, a role confirmed later by the establishment of the municipal government buildings.
The current structure is that defined with the restructuring of the Platea Comunis or Magna (space between the cathedral and today's Piazza della Repubblica ), commissioned by the municipality and implemented between the thirteenth and fifteenth centuries, according to a specific urban project aimed at redevelop the city acropolis, the fulcrum of the collective life of the municipal society. The intervention focused on the enlargement of the Cathedral of San Lorenzo and on the construction of the Palazzo dei Priori . The square changed its appearance in 1591 when the papal legate Domenico Pinellithere opened a new and wider access road (the current Via Calderini). The urban scene is characterized by the natural slopes of the land and on the square overlook the major city monuments.
At the center of the square is the Fontana Maggiore , the urban and visual center of the square. Work of the second half of the '200 by Nicola and Giovanni Pisano for the design and decoration, with the technical and architectural collaboration of Fra Bevignate and, for the hydraulic part, of Boninsegna Veneziano . The decorations evoke, in the complex iconological message, the political and cultural program of the Perugian Commune.
On the square, high on a flight of steps, you can admire the side of the cathedral of San Lorenzo showing off the precious pink marbles. The travertine portal is by Ippolito Scalza, designed by Galeazzo Alessi . The above- mentioned aedicule houses a crucifix by Polidoro Ciburri placed in 1540, emblem of the resistance of Perugia in the Salt War against Pope Paul III . On the left of the portal there is a bronze statue of Pope Julius III created by Vincenzo Danti , while on the right side stands a precious fifteenth-century pulpit, known as San Bernardino da Siena, from which the holy man preached many times in 1425 and 1427.
On the opposite side stands the Palazzo dei Priori , an impressive example of Gothic architecture. The articulation of the volumes, the asymmetries and the irregularity of the system, highlight the long construction phase, which lasted from 1293-97 to 1443, and the use of pre-existing building structures. The building is home to the Municipality of Perugia and the National Gallery of Umbria . The fan steps go up to a large portal that gives access to the Sala dei Notari . At the top, resting on shelves, they place the copies of the griffin griffin and the Guelph lion, the two symbols of the city, whose originals are inside the building. The Palazzo dei Priori, extends along Corso Vannucci , and on the ground floor there is the hall of theCollegio della Mercanzia and the Collegio del Cambio .
