The Palazzo del Podestà is a historic building in the city of Bergamo, is part of the network of the Museum of stories in Bergamo managed by the Bergamo Foundation in history. The building, for centuries called Hospitium potestatis , is located in Piazza Vecchia, former Piazza Nuova. The ancient staircase connects it to the great room of the Capriate of the Palazzo della Ragione ; the northernmost part of the façade opens onto Piazza Duomo in front of the Basilica of Sant'Alessandro . The palace includes the bell tower .
The history of the Palazzo del Podestà follows the history of Bergamo. Its position is divided between two squares: Piazza Vecchia, bureaucratic and administrative headquarters with the Palazzo della Ragione , and Piazza Duomo, the clerical seat with the church of San Vincenzo and Sant'Alessandro , the Congregation of Mercy Maggiore , makes it a significant part of the city.
It was built in the twelfth century by the Ghibelline faction family of Suardi, the notarial deeds named it as Palazzo ex Zentilino Suardo and used as a residential building. The bloody struggles between the faction or Guelph or Ghibelline town families, led the Suardi family to lose ownership of the palace that became the Hospitium potestatis , owned by the municipality and residence of the podestà up to the fourteenth century .
The building underwent a first fire in 1360 which required restoration. In a notarial deed of 1442, there was a change of ownership to the Avogadro brothers, who sold a part of it to the Congregation of Greater Mercy. After 1428 with the Venetian rule , it changed the appearance of the city and the destination of the different buildings. The building was enlarged, an entrance to the square was opened and the external staircase connected to the hall of the Capriate of the Palazzo della Ragione. and took the name of the palace of the Jurists , with this name the southern part of the civic tower is still identified .
In 2012, the historic interactive museum of the Venetian age was set up in the halls of the building, part of the Bergamo Foundation in non-profit history. Following a path that is divided into seven rooms, there is a historical period that since 1492 , the year of the discovery of America and its commercial development, leads to the knowledge of the Republic of Venice, its power and its trade.
In the interactive rooms we are transported in the Middle Ages, through a journey that leads from Venice to Bergamo, a visit that helps to interact in the sixteenth century, meeting the places and characters who made the history of Bergamo of those years. The city represented in the sixteenth century , accompanies the visitor to the construction of the Venetian walls and the destruction of churches and monasteries that were an obstacle to their construction, such as the church of Sant'Alessandro in Colonna and the monastery of Santo Stefano reaching up to Porta Sant ' Alexander , with the colors and sounds of the great fair that was outside the walls, and that came up to the walls.

The Palazzo della Ragione is a historic building in the city of Bergamo. The building, known for centuries as Palatium Comunis Pergami , is located in the upper town, that is, in the part enclosed within the Venetian walls . Facing the Palazzo Nuovo , now home to the Angelo Mai Civic Library , and sideways both to the Palazzo del Podestà and the Torre Civica (also known as Campanone ), it borders the south-western side of Piazza Vecchia, which for centuries has been the political center of the orobic city.
The building was built at the end of the twelfth century , between 1183 (the date when the peace of Constance was signed ) and 1198 , when the first municipal realities began to develop within the Holy Roman Empire . Even Bergamo was not far behind, so as to equip itself with this municipal palace mentioned as Palatium Comunis Pergami in documents of 1198 , which in fact make it the oldest Italian municipal palace.
The building maintained the role of political center of the city even at the end of the communal era when, with the arrival of the Republic of Venice in the first half of the15th century , it was used almost exclusively as a place where justice was administered, hence Palazzo della Ragione, while at the opposite end of Piazza Nuova the rooms for the city council assemblies were built. In 1513 the structure was damaged by a fire, being promptly restored. In the years 1538-1554 a more important restoration work was carried out on a project by Pietro Isabello with his son Leonardo.
At the end of the domination of the Serenissima , which took over in 1797 the Napoleonic Republic Cisalpine, the palace lost the prerogatives of the city's political center. The institutional decadence was accentuated from the mid- nineteenth century when neither the Austrian domination nor the newborn Kingdom of Italy guaranteed the structure an important role. Only from the second half of the twentieth century the building was involved in a project of revaluation in tourism, which allowed it to return to its former glory.
Originally the main front of the building was facing the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore, but it was turned towards Piazza Vecchia, then Piazza Nuova, in the years 1462 and 1463 when the Serenissima had the arches open on the ground floor towards the square and the windows gothic, while it was already completed since late summer of 1457 the staircase leading to the entrance through a loggia overpass and which also allows access to the adjoining Palazzo dei giuristi. In 1464, on the new façade facing Piazza Nuova, the first large bas-relief with the lion of St. Mark was placed, gilded on a blue backdrop, in a shrine evaluated by Filarete, who came specially from Milan.
Very similar to other Italian municipal buildings built in medieval times , it has a ground floor open on three sides (originally two) with a portico. This is equipped with a loggia with acute arches and round arches, with perimeter supporting pillars and sixteenth-century columns in the center. The pillars themselves are adorned with capitals with decorative elements in Romanesque style, including animals and zoomorphic elements (lions, birds and monkeys) and anthropomorphic elements. Inside the portico there is a small square that divides Piazza Vecchia, a symbol of political power, from the Piazza del Duomo, a symbol of religious power in which the Cathedral , the Colleoni Chapel and the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore are located.

The Palazzo del Podestà is a civic building in Bologna, northern Italy. The edifice was built around 1200 as the seat of the local podestà, the various functionaries of the commune. It stands on the Piazza Maggiore, near the Palazzo Comunale and facing the Basilica of San Petronio.
Proving insufficient for the massive participation of the people in the city's government, it was in 1245 flanked by the Palazzo Re Enzo, over which stands the Torre dell'Arengo, whose bell was used to call the people during emergencies. The Palazzo del Podestà is a long building, with a large hall on the upper floor. The lower floor is a double open arcade, the so-called Voltone del Podestà, through which pass two lanes of shops.
In 1453 Aristotile Fioravanti replaced the bell and reconstructed the original Gothic façade in the Renaissance style by order of Giovanni II Bentivoglio. In the Voltone, in 1525, were placed the terracotta statues of the city's protectors, Sts. Petronius, Proculus, Dominic and Francis, all by Alfonso Lombardi. In the 16th-18th centuries the Palazzo was used as theatre. In the 20th century it was frescoed by Adolfo de Carolis.

BERGAMO CITY, ITALY: #strolling#dining#shopping#
Bergamo is an Italian city northeast of Milan, in the Lombardy region. Its older upper district, called Città Alta, is characterized by cobblestone streets, encircled by Venetian walls and accessible by funicular. It's home to the Duomo di Bergamo, the city cathedral. Also here are the Romanesque Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore and the grand Cappella Colleoni, a chapel with 18th-century frescoes by Tiepolo.
The majestic Campanone Torre Civica is a bell tower connecting the Palazzo della Ragione and the Palazzo del Podestà. The medieval Viscontea Fortress, surrounded by cypress trees, displays war relics and offers views of Milan’s skyline and the Alps beyond. The modern lower city, or Città Bassa, has shops, buskers and art galleries like the Accademia Carrara. It's also home to the Teatro Donizetti, a theater offering opera, ballet and jazz. It overlooks the Sentierone, a large paved area where locals go to stroll. North of the city, Val Brembana and Val Seriana are valleys dotted with ski resorts.

Places to see in ( Bergamo - Italy ) Campanone o Torre Civica
The Civic Tower, also known as “Campanone”, is located in the main square of the Upper Town, Piazza Vecchia. It was built between XI and XII Century, when the aristocratic families used to vie to erect the highest tower in the city, so much that Bergamo was nicknamed “The City of one hundred Towers” during that time.
There are different ways to appreciate the Tower’s beauty. You can stare at it from Piazza Vecchia, or you can climb up to its top and enjoy the amazing view: in fact, it’s the only point from where it’s possible to see both the squares at the same time, Piazza Vecchia and Piazza del Duomo. Similar to a belfry, the “Torre Civica” connects the Palazzo della Ragione and the Palazzo del Podestà.
Every night at 10, in the last 360 years, the bell has been chiming one hundred times: back in the days, the Campanone used to warn citizens about the closing of the four entrance Town Gates. The Civic Tower, 52 meters high, can be climbed by means of a narrow staircase or by a modern glass elevator.
The highest tower of the city makes Bergamo Alta’s skyline so particular and beautiful. It represents the most famous one of the numerous medieval towers, to the extent that it was also used as the Podestà seat, the most important office of the city. During that time, every noble family in Bergamo used to show its power by building a tower higher than the others.
Once you’ve reached the top, you can admire the biggest historical bell in Lombardy. It was melted in 1656 and was decorated in manneristic style: due to its huge size, Bergamo citizens began to call it “Campanone - the Big Bell”, a name that was later used for Tower itself, too.
