The Mafia And A Nigerian Gang Are Targeting Refugees In Sicily (HBO)
They’ve fled violence, poverty, and terrorism – and made the often perilous journey across the Mediterranean from Africa and the Middle East. But for the more than 100,000 migrants who’ve arrived in Italy so far this year, the life that awaits them can be almost as dangerous as the one they left behind.
This is particularly true for economic migrants, who don’t have the same legal status as refugees, and aren’t given the same work permits or financial aid to help them survive. Barred from the legal workforce, and with few financial options, many are targeted by criminal gangs — supported by the Italian mafia — and thrust into a life of sex slavery and drug trafficking.
That’s what VICE News discovered after visiting Ballarò, a small market area, and traditional mafia stronghold near Palermo, Sicily, where the infamous Cosa Nostra mafia syndicate continues to wield power.
VICE News went to Sicily, to hear from migrants who’ve been caught in the crosshairs.

The Mafia Is Trashing Italy... Literally (Part 1)
In the city of Naples, Italy, the Mafia has controlled the waste-management industry for decades -- dumping and burning trash across its rolling hills and vineyards. In 1994, the European Union declared the situation an official environmental emergency, and things have only gotten worse since then. When we investigated the situation we found mutated sheep, poisoned mozzarella, alarming rates of cancer, and pissed off farmers ready to push back against the Camorra, Italy's most powerful and dangerous criminal organization (and the government that enables it).

Police in Italy tackle new kind of mafia: The Black Axe
Palermo, Sicily — Police in the birthplace of the traditional Mafia moved against a new organized crime threat: “The Black Axe,” a Nigerian crime syndicate that has spread internationally.
Leonardo Agueci, deputy anti-Mafia prosecutor in Palermo, said: “Cosa Nostra tolerates the Nigerian mafia in Palermo. Cosa Nostra allowed the Nigerians to organize a subordinate structure they were tolerated as long as they didn’t come outside their perimeter.”
Police in several cities fanned out in the night with arrest warrants for 27 people. At least 17 were apprehended, authorities said, including the alleged head of the organization and the so-called Defence Minister who is accused of issuing the orders for brutal punishment. Authorities named Festus Pedro Erhonmosele and Kenneth Osahon Aghaku among its alleged leaders. Authorities say the suspects ran, directly or indirectly, the management and control of illegal economic activities in certain areas: including debt collection, prostitution and drug trafficking.
The inside operations and its structure were revealed by an informant who was charged this summer and during his plea bargaining revealed his knowledge of the secretive criminal network, including the names of its senior members, authorities said. The Black Axe are reported to be a splinter group of Nigeria’s “Neo-Black Movement of Africa.”

Gennaro viene scoperto e ritenuto responsabile dell'omicidio e rinchiuso a Poggioreale.

A Short History of Norman Sicily ????????
■ SICILY, ITALY: The Italian island of Sicily have shifted hands many times over the millennia. Of the many groups of people who've conquered and ruled the island I find the tale of how a band of Viking mercenaries in the service of the Roman Emperor in Constantinople came to rule not just Sicily but all of Southern Italy the most intriguing. These Vikings became known to history as the Normans (Northman i.e. Man of the North).
They originally came from Norway and Denmark but carved out a Kingdom for themselves in Normandie France. So How did they end up as rulers of Southern Italy?
That and more in this from Erice, a tiny mountain village west of Palermo.
