Palmeral of Elche - UNESCO World Heritage Site
The UNESCO World Heritage site of the Palmeral of Elche is an enormous palm plantation area, near the city of Elche in south-eastern Spain. It's been around for thousands of years, and each of the various groups in Spain have left their mark on the area - the Romans, the Moors, the Phoenicians, and the Christians. It's a very unusual World Heritage site this one, and very beautiful as well. Enjoy!

This is Elche (Elx) in Spain
Elchen kaupungin nimi on valencian kielellä Elx. Kaupunki on vanhaa iberialaista alkuperää.
Elchen kaupungissa on Euroopan laajimmat palmumetsät. Palmumetsä ympäröi kaupunkia kolmelta suunnalta. Metsässä arvioidaan olevan noin 170.000 taatelipalmua. Palmujen istutuksen aloittivat jo karthagolaiset, mutta erityisen hyvin palmumetsiä hoidettiin maurilaisvallan aikana, olivathan palmut heidän afrikkalaisen kotimaansa puita. Elchen kaupungista toimitetaan joka vuosi palmusunnuntaina palmunoksa jokaiseen Espanjan kirkkoon. Ne siunataan ennen lähettämistä paikallisessa Santa Marian basilikakirkossa. Elchen puistoista Kaupunginpuisto on tunnetuin. Puiston ainoalaatuinen erikoisuus on harvinainen palmu nimeltä Palmeral Imperial, jonka runko jakaantuu seitsemään pienempään haaraan.

Places to see in ( Alicante - Spain ) Palmeral of Elche
The Palmeral or Palm Grove of Elche is the generic name used to designate a system of date palm orchards in the city of Elche. Currently, in the urban area of Elche there are a total of 97 different orchards containing about 70,000 date palms, mostly in the east bank of the Vinalopó. This number does not include other large plantations located around the city proper. All together, the number may be close to 200,000 palms.
The Palm Grove covers over 3.5 km2 (1.4 sq mi), including 1.5 km2 (0.58 sq mi) within the city of Elche. Palmeral of Elche is the only palm grove of its type anywhere in Europe, the northernmost of its kind and one of the largest in the world, surpassed in size only by some in Arab countries.
The first date palms in Elche could have been originally planted as early as the 5th century BC by Carthaginians who settled in south-east Spain. The Romans introduced the first elaborated forms of agricultural water management. Under the Moors the city of Elche moved from its Roman location 7 km away to its current location. The moors further developed the irrigation system with the brackish water of the Vinalopó, which is basically the same as the one still in use for the palm orchards. The formal landscape of the palmeral that still exists today was created when the city was under Moorish control between the 7th and 10th century.
A famous palm is the one known as Imperial Palm (Palmera Imperial), with 7 stems in the shape of a candelabra. It was named after Elisabeth, known as Sissi, the Empress consort of Franz Joseph, who visited the plantation in 1894 and to whom it was dedicated. By 2014 the Imperial Palm was estimated to be about 170 years old.

Places to see in ( Elche - Spain )
Elche, or Elx, is a town located in the comarca of Baix Vinalopó, Spain. According to the 2014 census, Elche has a population of some 228,647 inhabitants, ranking as the third most populated city in the Valencian Community (after Valencia and Alicante) and the 20th largest Spanish city. Part of the municipality is coastal but the main city is some 11 km (6.8 mi) from the Mediterranean Sea. A small creek called Vinalopó flows through the city splitting it in two parts.
Elche lost importance during the period of Moorish occupation, when it was moved slightly north to its present location. James II of Aragon took the city from the Moors in the 13th century, during the Reconquista. The city grew throughout the 18th century and became more important during the 19th century with the arrival of the railway and a booming industrial development of what used to be the traditional footwear industry. Many archaeological remains have been found in Elche, with the stone bust of the Lady of Elche (Dama de Elche/Dama d'Elx in Spanish and Valencian (or Catalan), respectively) being the most important. This may date from the Iberian period (4th century BC). The original is in the National Archaeological Museum of Spain.
The economy of Elche is based, in large part, on the footwear industry, with over 1,000 shoe factories, being one of the most important footwear centres in Spain and the rest of Europe with brands like Pura Lopez or Panama Jack. There are other economic activities in Elche: agriculture (dates, olives, cereals and pomegranates), although it has lost importance in recent years; rubber industry; trade, which employs 20% of the workforce; and tourism. Elche has a conference centre (called Ciutat d'Elx), an international airport (Aeropuerto de Alicante) a public University, Universidad Miguel Hernández, and a private University, Universidad CEU Cardenal Herrera.

The Mystery Play of Elx (better known as Misteri d'Elx, in Valencian (or Catalan)) is a sacral-lyrical medieval drama, dated from the 15th century, which was declared a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO in 2002. It is played every year in mid August, in the context of the local holidays dedicated to the Assumption of Virgin Mary. Also as a part of this celebration, on the 13th of August is the date of a celebration in Elche called Nit de l'Albà (Night of the Dawn) in which a city-wide night-long show of fireworks takes place.
