Panama Canal (Panama City) Vacation Travel Video Guide
Modern time wonder The Panama Canal in Panama City.
Panama City is the capital of the southern state of Central America’s land bridge. This vibrant, modern city is located in a tropical country at which Panama’s isthmus is only eighty miles wide. The country's name is famous because it contains the most important waterway in the world and the development of both urban and rural areas is due to the presence of the gigantic Panama Canal. This massive and amazingly expensive project of building technology is best understood by travelling along it, a journey that takes around nine hours and changes direction twice a day. Soon we will see the monumental steel bridge of Puenta De Las Américas, the only land connection between North and South America, since the channel cuts through both continents. After travelling twelve kilometres inland the ships must negotiate the first double lock, which takes around forty five minutes. After forty kilometres, the third lock system follows, the Gatún Locks, where the ships are lowered twenty six metres. This impressive process takes an hour in three successive lock chambers, each of which is about three hundred metres long. The dream of a water connection between the Atlantic and the Pacific came true within a period of ten years. A remarkable feat of engineering and water power!

Panama Canal
The Panama Canal is an artificial 77 km (48 mi) waterway in Panama that connects the Atlantic Ocean with the Pacific Ocean. The canal cuts across the Isthmus of Panama and is a conduit for maritime trade. Canal locks are at each end to lift ships up to Gatun Lake, an artificial lake created to reduce the amount of excavation work required for the canal, 26 m (85 ft) above sea level, and then lower the ships at the other end. The original locks are 34 m (110 ft) wide. A third, wider lane of locks was constructed between September 2007 and May 2016. The expanded canal began commercial operation on June 26, 2016. The new locks allow transit of larger, post-Panamax ships, capable of handling more cargo.

Welcome to Panama City, the capital and largest city of Panama!
If you google Panama, one of the first things that will appear in your search will probably be the famous Panama Canal. That is no surprise, as it is the biggest tourist attraction in this Central American country.
Why is this 80-kilometer long canal so amazing you ask? Well, it is a shipping shortcut that connects the Atlantic and Pacific ocean, significantly shortening all water travels.
Even though the idea of such canal dates back to 1513, the construction didn’t start until the late nineteenth century. The project was delegated to French engineers, but it had to be terminated due to skyrocketing costs, harsh conditions and heavy personnel losses caused by tropical diseases.
The project was restarted once Panama gained independence from Colombia and signed a ratified agreement with the USA. On 1 April 1914, the construction was officially completed, but the opening for commercial traffic was postponed for 15 August 1914 due to the outbreak of World War I.
Politically, the Panama Canal remained a part of the US territory of until 1977, when the process of transferring territorial control to Panama officially began. It was finally completed on 31 December 1999.
Today, this technological marvel operates around-the-clock, with some 40 vessels passing through each day. The system consists of three sets of locks, which raise ships from sea level to the same height of the Gatun Lake. The canal allows shippers of commercial goods to save both time and money, which results in lower consumer prices for everyone.

Panama Canal Full Transit in 5-minutes, Cruzando el Canal de Panama en 5 minutos
The Celebrity Infinity was making its way from the Pacific Ocean to the Atlantic Ocean through the Panama Canal. This video was taken from a fixed position on the top deck of the cruise ship for more than 10 hours. It shows the whole route and operations with short explanations. The length of the video was reduced to less than 6 minutes.
President Theodore Roosevelt built Panama Canal and used the Army Corps Engineers to complete the project. The main reason for the canal was to reduce the cost and distance by not having to travel around the tip of South America for another approximately 5,000 miles. The secondary reason is for security of the country, to be above to move the navy ships quickly between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans.

How Does the Panama Canal Work?
The Panama Canal is approximately 80 kilometers long between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. The Canal uses a system of locks that function as water lifts, raising the ships from sea level (the Pacific or the Atlantic) to the level of Gatun Lake (26 meters above sea level); ships then sail the channel through the Continental Divide.

We leave the Jungle Land Panama floating lodge and head to the Miraflores Locks. After a brief stop at the locks, we make our way to the UNESCO World Heritage neighborhood of Casco Viejo in Panama City. We check in to the terrific American Trade Hotel and then explore the area.

A visit to the Panama Canal
Welcome to the Panama Canal. It has been in operation for nearly 100 years and it still is amazing to me. This time around (my 4th visit) I finally got to see the Gatun Locks operation at the Atlantic Ocean end of the Canal, near Colon, Panama. While a smaller visitors center and without the museum and video, the experience is much, much more intimate. You are quite a bit closer to the ships and crowds do not exist. I suppose that's the trade-off for it being a 90 minutes further drive from Panama City.

The Panama Canal is an artificial 82 km (51 mi) waterway in Panama that connects the Atlantic Ocean with the Pacific Ocean
The canal has three sets of double locks: Miraflores and Pedro Miguel on the Pacific side and Gatún on the Atlantic. Between the locks, ships pass through a huge artificial lake.
It takes ships on average 8-10 hours to travel the Panama Canal. It will take 2 weeks if a ship tried to bypass the canal and travel around the entire continent of south America.
Ship are charged a toll based on their weight. The average toll for a ship to travel the canal is $150,000, but it can much more expensive for the largest ship and additional charges.
All toll for the Panama Canal must be paid in cash. The most expensive regular toll was paid by the Norwegian pearl, which paid $375,600 to cross the canal.

The Panama Canal is an 82-kilometre (51 mi) ship canal in Panama that connects the Atlantic Ocean (via the Caribbean Sea) to the Pacific Ocean. The canal cuts across the Isthmus of Panama and is a key conduit for international maritime trade. Work on the canal, which began in 1880, was completed in 1914, making it no longer necessary for ships to sail the lengthy Cape Horn route around the southernmost tip of South America and to navigate the dangerous waters of the Strait of Magellan. One of the largest and most difficult engineering projects ever undertaken, the New Panama Canal expansion shortcut made it possible for ships to travel between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans in half the time previously required. The shorter, faster, safer route to the U.S. West Coast and to nations in and along the Pacific Ocean allowed those places to become more integrated with the world economy.

The Panama Canal expansion project also called the Third Set of Locks Project, doubled the capacity of the Panama Canal by adding a new lane of traffic allowing for a larger number of ships, and increasing the width and depth of the lanes and locks allowing larger ships to pass. The new ships, called New Panamax, are about one and a half times the previous Panamax size and can carry over twice as much cargo. The expanded canal began commercial operation on 26 June 2016.
