CYPRUS: Palaipafos archaeological site (Old Paphos) / Kouklia [HD]
Palaipafos (Palaepaphos) was one of the most celebrated places of pilgrimage in the ancient Greek world, and once an ancient city kingdom of Cyprus. Here are the ruins of the Temple of Aphrodite, where the most ancient remains date back to the 12th century BC. The temple was one of the most important places of cult and pilgrimage of the ancient world, until the 3rd–4th centuries AD. The museum, housed in the Lusignan Manor, has many finds from the area.
The Lusignan Manor was built in the 13th century by Lusignan kings, and it has been renovated and restored over the years. One of the wings that dates back to the Ottoman period now hosts the museum.

Fyti village near Paphos in Cyprus - A road trip from Paphos
Fyti village is about 25kms away from Paphos in Cyprus, and worth a visit if you want to see the old Cypriot tradition of weaving. It's one of the most important villages on the island when it comes to weaving, and the weaves which are made in the village are known as Fithkiotika.
They have a variety of patterns and rich colours. In the small museum you can see thousands of examples of traditionally woven products, along with the looms that make them.
I visited the village as part of a recent road trip around Cyprus. Check out my article on things to do in and near Paphos -

CYPRUS WINE MUSEUM CULTURAL PROJECT: 'KINYRAS, KING OF PAFOS'
The Kinyras Project of The Cyprus Wine Museum started in 2009. It is a multi-dimensional project focused on Cyprus Art, Music, Wine & Perfume since the 4th millennium B.C until nowadays.
The project includes Archaeological and Art exhibitions; concerts with music composed by Cypriot composers inspired from the above theme; Publications etc.
During the past years, parts of the project where adapted occasionally for the needs of the Republic of Cyprus (such as the XIII Games of the Small States of Europe, Cyprus Presidency of the council of the EU) and also for the demanding tourist industry of the island.
In the video clip you can see the cultural event that was adapted to the needs of the American Azamara Club Cruises. The event included an oenological experience through all senses into 5500 years of Cyprus Wine History and also a journey where ancient history meets with the aromas and flavours of Cyprus through poetry set to music.

Paphos Travel Guide - Cyprus Magical Moments
Paphos Travel Guide - Cyprus Magical Moments
Paphos is a town at the southwestern tip of Cyprus, between the coast and the Troodos Mountains. Paphos is renowned as the birthplace of Greek goddess Aphrodite and in the ancient times was the capital and main cultural city of the island. Modern-day Paphos is divided in two, with the upper section up the hill being the commercial center, and lower Kato Paphos containing the main archaeological points of interest and tourist services.
The local municipality has made great efforts in recent years to improve the lower Kato Paphos area, which combines hotels, bars and restaurants along a coastal strip a few km long. There is a newly built front/'promenade' leading round to the marina and a long coastal path with amazing views - perfect for a morning or evening stroll.
Paphos is made up of two areas: a) the lower town or 'Kato Paphos', by the harbour and most of the tourist hotels and nightlife and b) the upper town ('Ktima Paphos') which is the main administrative, commercial and modern shopping town for the region of Paphos. The market is in the upper town. Both sections are small enough to navigate on foot, although many people take the bus to travel up the hill from the harbour area. Buses are also available to reach Coral Bay, Polis and other local villages. However, it is easier to use a vehicle (bike/quad/car) to travel further into the Troodos mountains, the Akamas peninsula or go off the beaten track to find small villages in the hills. It gets hot and humid in summer (33 deg C and 90% Humidity) between late June and early September, so air conditioning can be welcome in the car then. The rest of the year is relatively mild but there are sometimes colder spells in January & February.
Paphos offers a wealth of dining choices. There are limitless choices from Chinese to Mexican, Italian to Indian. But the jewel in Paphos' crown is its traditional Cypriot mezze and seafood. Head to the harbour to sample freshly caught fish at one of the many seafood restaurants along the front. Venture into one of the many villages fringing Paphos town for authentic food andgreat atmosphere. Head towards the mountains, or call into Kathikas village where there are a multitude of traditional tavernas.
By the harbour stands Paphos Castle, originally a Byzantine fort built to protect the harbour. It was rebuilt by the Lusignans in the 13th century, dismantled in 1570 by the Venetians who were unable to defend it against the Ottomans, who in their turn restored and strengthened it after capturing the island. Saranta Kolones, Kato Paphos, near the harbour, is a castle built in the first years of Lusignan rule (beginning of the 12th century) maybe on the site of a previous Byzantine castle. It was destroyed in the earthquake of 1222.
UNESCO added the entire town to its World Cultural Heritage List. Among the treasures unearthed are the mosaics in the Houses of Dionysos, Theseus and Aion, well preserved after 16 centuries under the soil. Then there are the mysterious vaults and caves, the Tombs of the Kings, the pillar to which Saint Paul was said to have been tied and whipped and the ancient Odeon Theatre. Other places of interest include the Byzantine Museum and the District Archaeological Museum, with its attractive collection of Cypriot antiquities from the Paphos area, dating from the Neolithic Age up to 1700 AD. Near the Odeon are the remains of the ancient city walls, the Roman Agora and a building dedicated to Asclepius, god of medicine.

Cyprus is a big hitter with beach lovers – it’s got 57 stretches with Blue Flag status. Once you’ve topped up your tan, slip into a wetsuit for a scuba dive around sunken ships, or show off your front crawl with a lap around Aphrodite’s Rock. Away from the shoreline, you can nose around monasteries, vineyards and traditional villages in the Troodos Mountains. More than nine of the churches dotted around the hilltops have UNESCO ticks to their name, too.
One of the island’s most-visited sites is the time-worn Tombs of the Kings, where wealthy aristocrats were buried in the 4th-century BC. Things are brought bang up-to-date in the buzzing coastal cities of Paphos and Limassol, where the streets are awash with cafes, bars and boutique shops.

Agia Marina Church in Agia Marinouda - Paphos, Cyprus
The Agia Marina Church is located in the Agia Marinouda Village in the Paphos district. Agia Marinouda neighbours with Geroskipou to the east and with Koloni to the west. Agia Marinouda has both the elements of mountain and sea as it is built at a height of 150 metres above the sea level with a panoramic view.
The church is dedicated to Agia Marina from who the village received its name. It is said that there used to be an older chapel in the same position which was built in 1920, however that construction was not stable and it collapsed.

Greek mosaics, Paphos, free part of Cyprus. UNESCO, 1965 Excavations of Polish People's Republic
Exhibition on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of Polish archaeological work in Nea Paphos opens in the Cyprus Museum in Nicosia.
It is co-organized by the Polish Centre of Mediterranean Archaeology (PCMA), University of Warsaw and the Department of Antiquities of the Republic of Cyprus. The co-organizers are Institute of Mediterranean and Oriental Cultures, Polish Academy of Sciences, Faculty of Architecture, Wrocław University of Technology and Institute of Archaeology, Jagiellonian University, Kraków. It is organized within the framework of the International Museum Day and the European Night of Museums. Rector of the University of Warsaw has given it his honorary patronage. The exhibition will run from 25 May through 30 November 2015. Afterwards it is planned to find permanent home in the site museum in Paphos.
For the past 50 years, archaeologists from the PCMA excavating the UNESCO World Heritage site of Nea Paphos have uncovered important architectural complexes with well preserved wall paintings and mosaics. These masterpieces of ancient art, as well as the more mundane artifacts, illustrate the richness and diversity of life in the ancient capital of Cyprus. More information about the marketplace of Hellenistic and Roman Paphos was contributed recently by an expedition from the Jagiellonian University in Kraków working there since 2011. Lately, the Warsaw team of archaeologists and restorers has worked together with the Cypriot Department of Antiquities toward opening the district near the ancient harbor as an archaeological park for tourists with reconstructed porticoes and restored mosaic floors.
History of Polish excavations in Paphos
The first days of excavations in 1965 confirmed the importance of the site. A hoard of silver coins of the Alexander the Great type was followed by finds of marble sculpture and finely decorated mosaic floors that signaled the discovery of a late Roman palatial residence. Successive seasons of explorations in the southern wing of this building led to the uncovering in 1969 of a figural mosaic showing the Greek hero Theseus slaying the Minotaur. This became the namesake of the newly discovered structure. After that work concentrated on the official reception area in the southern wing of the Villa of Theseus. More mosaic floors and marble sculptures, including the mosaic of Achilles and a statue of Aphrodite with a sword, were uncovered. The eastern and northern wings were explored in the 1970s and early 1980s, uncovering the mosaic of Poseidon.
The spectacular discovery in 1983 of the mosaic of Aion opened a new stage of the project, which was now devoted to exploration of the residential quarter east of the Villa of Theseus. In the second half of the 1980s, investigations moved to the south of the Villa. Discoveries included more figural and geometric mosaics, places of domestic cult, household equipment buried under earthquake debris. The combined work of archaeologists and restorers led to the reconstruction of one of the porticoes in the main courtyard of the “Hellenistic” House (pictured on the front cover). Research by the University of Warsaw team is being continued in this area.
Life and art in the ancient Cypriot city
Close to 250 artifacts from Polish excavations go on show at the Cyprus Museum in Nicosia. The exhibition presents major themes: history of Paphos, residential and public districts, official and private cults, symbols of authority, the Paphos mint, building decoration — architectural styles, painting and mosaic floors, water in the service of the inhabitants and everyday life.
The display presents marble statuary, reconstructions of decorated architectural complexes, wall painting, artifacts representing all aspects of everyday life from religious worship to mundane activities, as well as commerce and craftsmanship, symbolic evidence of power and authority attested by coin minting. Multimedia presentations of the fine mosaic floors from the site carry the visitor across the island, to the place where they have been found and are on display, and a 3D model shows the changes taking place on the site in the course of almost a thousand years of development.
