Papillon Enterprise in Port-au-Prince, Haiti
Papillon means Butterfly in French. Around the world, people view the butterfly as representing endurance, change, hope, and life. Papillon Marketplace is a fair-trade certified, socially conscious lifestyle brand dedicated to supporting at-risk mothers and fathers with full-time artisan jobs in Haiti. Papillon’s mission of orphan prevention and family preservation through job creation has proven itself to be a viable solution for the current poverty orphan crisis affecting many developing nations. Papillon founder, Shelley Jean was featured in the Netflix documentary, Poverty Inc which showcased the positive impact of Papillon's methodology and approach to economic and social reform in Haiti.
Formed in 2009, this top-notch organization has built a successful artisan's workshop staffed by Haitians who make art out of various recycled materials such as paper, glass bottles, aluminum and steel drums. A tour of the boutique features the jewelry and crafts, but also introduces visitors to hard-working Haitians with compelling stories of how they provide for their children.
The staff are incredibly warm and diligent, and the adorable open-air cafe across the street, which is also part of the project, serves up excellent smoothies and coffee.

A visionary whose company helps change Haitian lives every step of the way
A former aerial performer for Cirque USA traded her high-flying life in Orlando, Florida for Port au Prince, Haiti.
Julie Colombino runs an ethical fashion business training Haitians to make footwear from tires. She is this week’s Game Changer on “Americas Now.”
In 2010, Haiti was devastated by a catastrophic earthquake. With only $7,000 and no plan, Julie wanted to find a way to help.
Eight years later, she is an entrepreneur providing job training to Haitian residents at her ethical footwear company. You could say she is fighting poverty - one step a time.
And Julie’s ambition for change does not stop with the Caribbean nation. After Haiti, she wants to grow her enterprise and create jobs in other vulnerable places around the world.
Check out this interview with the founder of “Rebuild Globally” … Julie Colombino.

2009 Apparent Project Haiti
This is an older promotional video for the Apparent Project. We now no longer host as many feeding programs except when families are in really dire situations. That's because we've given many families employment so they can feed their own kids! View the 2010 promo for more accurate information, or better yet, visit us at apparentproject.org.
