The Mayor of Paris has declared war on electric scooters. Anne Hidalgo wants to limit their speed and cut the number available to rent. There have been increasing complaints from Parisians about the disruption and danger caused by the latest fad in personal transport. Simon McGregor-Wood reports.

With my heals still healing from cracked craters and crooked cobblestones, I hop on a zippy two-wheel Lime scooter to witness the wonders of Paris. 13 years ago, I indulged in my first Nutella banana crepe while walking around the Montmartre area and on my final night I celebrate with a ceremony sweet.

Avenue Montaigne boasts numerous stores specialising in high fashion, such as Louis Vuitton, Dior, Chanel, Fendi, Valentino and Ralph Lauren, as well as jewellers like Bulgari and other upscale establishments such as the Plaza Athénée hotel.
Avenue Montaigne was originally called the allée des Veuves (widows' alley) because women in mourning gathered there, but the street has changed much since those days of the early 18th century. The current name comes from Michel de Montaigne, a writer of the French Renaissance. In the nineteenth century, the street earned some renown for its sparkling and colourful Bal Mabille (Mabille Gardens) on Saturday nights.

Electric standing scooter sharing service launches in Paris
Parisians will be able to rent out electric standing scooters to commute after California-based bicycle sharing service Lime launched their fleet in the French capital on Friday (June 22).
Lime users can find and unlock the scooters with a mobile phone app and leave them anywhere after their ride, which will cost one euro ($1.16) per ride plus 0.15 euros per minute.
Their speed is limited to 24 kilometres (15 miles) per hour and they have a range of 50 kilometres.
All scooters will be picked up every night around 9 p.m. for recharging and repairs, said Lime France director Arthur-Louis Jacquier, who was an executive with Gobee Bike, which earlier this year stopped its European bike sharing operations due to vandalism.
Lime arrives in Paris as the city's own alternative mobility solutions are in deep chaos.
