Kendog Heart of Mary Pilgrimage 5-15-19
My pilgrimage starts today by our group taking the bus from Avila, Spain and going to Salamanca, Spain or about 68 miles northwest. The countryside showed many energy-saving devices as well as the white storks that are now familiar to all. Arriving in Salamanca, we walked the path to the Alba de Tormes, Barefoot Carmelite Mothers Convent. Here is where St. Teresa of Avila founded her eighth convent of seventeen. The plaza where we waited before entering showed many storks on building steeples with their giant nests perched high. Going into the building, I was surprised by long narrow, but elegant Church of the Annunciation and took time to reflect on my pilgrimage before immersing myself to the religious artifacts embodied to the walls. At the time, I didn’t know that her uncorrupted body parts were up above the tabernacle until we had a tour behind the altar and moved on to the museum.
The museum showed many painting of Santa Teresa and religious articles that is in surprisingly good shape for her starting this convent in the year 1571. It was sad to see that many of the painting depict her with health problems, but then she is the patron saint for headaches and other sicknesses. She finally succumbs to TB or tuberculous. The holy relics at this Church are the heart and left arm that is placed an in unique ostensorium vessel. After our tour of the convent, we had Mass at the church across from where we entered the convent in the plaza named Church of Saint John of the Cross and had a friendly chat with the Carmelite priest after mass. We were next bused a little closer to the hub of the city where the Cathedral of Salamanca and school children overran the narrow cobbled streets. Salamanca is a premier university city of Spain with a rich history of noted scholars from the twelfth century.
As for the Cathedral, there is an old and a new that is connected, and I could only tell from the outside because of the plain structure compared to the more modern cathedral, but both are very old and huge inside that towers over the city. The astronaut in the façade was an exciting touch by the renovation artist done in 1992 to symbolize our modern era and fun to look for it as it blends in so well. When we speak of the Cathedral of Salamanca, in fact, we are referring to two churches joined together. First, there is the old cathedral dating from the 12th-13th centuries; and then the new one from the 16th century. The Old Cathedral is in the Romanesque style with the outstanding Gallo Tower. Inside this temple, the construction of which began at the end of the 12th century is the San Martín or Oil Chapel. The main reredos, which dated from the 15th century and was created by several painters with Dello Delli at the head, is also worthy of note. The mural painting which covers the vault is the work of Nicolás Florentino. In this tremendous pictorial work, it is possible to see the image of Christ at the Last Judgement. The Old Cathedral attracts the eye of the visitor due to the beautiful tombs of the bishops' and members of the nobility to be found inside.
The New Cathedral, built in the 16th century and completed in the 18th century by Churriguera, houses the image of the Virgin of the Assumption, carved in 1626 by the sculptor Esteban Rueda. The temple's Baroque retrochoir is very beautiful and contains Renaissance images such as that of The Virgin of Loreto and those of Saint John the Baptist. As we continued walking the city streets, our local guide pointed out 16th-century graffiti by students as a result of their test scores. Our local guide next took us to the Casa de las Conchas, where the outside wall has approximately 300 shells displayed. The shells on the front of the house allude to an order since the scallop shell is traditionally associated with St. James--Santiago. Other than historical purpose, there wasn’t that much to see. We had some free time, and I relaxed in the Plaza Mayor with ice cream and some coffee as well as helping at McDonald’s with the machines to order some coffee but gave up as it took too long to get the order. Old fashion waiter works for me. Returning o Avila our bus stopped at the Los Cuatro Postes monument and I enjoyed a daytime view of the “Humiliator” and the Walled City of Avila before calling it a day.

November 22, 2019 | Religion remains central to life in Mexico and Mexican America. Religious understandings and goals inform and energize politics, community lives, gender relations, migration, and more. Yet there is no singular Mexican religion; rather, a universe of visions and understandings shape the changing communities of Mexico and Mexican America. The powerful and the populace, rural peoples and the growing numbers streaming into cities across greater North America live in worlds defined and at times contested by religious commitments.
This event engaged with diverse analysts to discuss religion in Mexico and Mexican America during decades of change—from the debates of the 1920s to the challenges of our times.
This event was co-sponsored by the Mexican Cultural Institute of Washington DC, Catholic University of America, and Georgetown University's Americas Initiative, Center for Latin American Studies, and its Berkley Center for Religion, Peace, and World Affairs.

Sustainability and ecovillage - Anthropology of the Dutch
Rascha Wisse (46) is involved in the Ecovillage in Bergen, where she takes care of an edible forest. She also works in a natural shop and is an environmentalist. In this episode of Anthropology of the Dutch about the sustainable, Rascha can be seen in the Ecovillage and she is interviewed.
The Pigeonhole man about this episode:
Almost everyone is sustainable nowadays, but there is still a group that considers itself the pioneers: the changemakers, they also say. Like Wouter van Dieren; he literally calls himself the pope of the environmental movement. It is the group that says: if we do not do something now, then in 2045 we will be screwed, people. And that year keeps on changing - it used to be 1975. That is of course interesting, this doom thinking. We also like to have one group each season that resembles the left-wing, VPRO-like persons. It is safer than to always portray communities that are far away from you.
