Parvati Temple - Khajuraho, Madhya Pradesh
The Khajuraho Group of Monuments in Khajuraho, a town in the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh, located in Chhatarpur District, about 620 kilometres (385 mi) southeast of New Delhi, is one of the most popular tourist destinations in India. Khajuraho has the largest group of medieval Hindu and Jain temples, famous for their erotic sculptures.
Between 950 and 1150, the Chandela monarchs built these temples when the Tantric tradition may have been accepted. In the days before the Mughal conquests, when boys lived in hermitages, following brahmacharya until they became men, they could learn about the world and prepare themselves to become householders through examining these sculptures and the worldly desires they depicted.
Locals living in the Khajuraho village always knew about and kept up the temples as best as they could. They were pointed out to the English in the late 19th century when the jungles had taken a toll on the monuments. In the 19th century, British engineer T.S. Burt arrived in the area, followed by General Alexander Cunningham. Cunningham put Khajuraho on the world map when he explored the site on behalf of the Archaeological Survey of India and described what he found in glowing terms. The Khajuraho Group of Monuments has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and is considered to be one of the seven wonders of India.

Parvati temple in the Khajuraho complex, Madhya Pradesh
Parvati Temple is located on the south west side of Vishwanath Temple; this temple enshrines goddess Parvati as the consort of Lord Shiva. Parvati temple is also known for its architecture and sculptures. While some legends claim that this temple was originally dedicated to Lord Vishnu, it was changed into the temple of Goddess Parvati so that it can be associated with the Temple of Lord Shiva. Built with fine sculptures and painted in white this temple stands for its exemplary looks. Situated just besides the grandeur of Vishwanath temple this temple is decorated with the fine sculptures of Lord Shiva and his wedding with Goddess Parvati. The idols of Lord Shiva and Parvati reflect the typical Indo- Aryan sculptures that demarcate the specialty of Khajuraho Temples. This temple belongs to the Western Group of Temple Complex in Khajuraho
Parvati temple unlike other Khajuraho temples is hardly enamoured by elaborations. With its single dome and special curvatures this temple marks the heritage of khajuraho. This temple also has the deity of Goddess Ganga, the celestial river, who stands on a crocodile. The temple has heavily restored small sanctum. The porch is lost and of the sanctum only the plinth has survived.
The arch that is above sanctum door depicts sculptures of Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva. There are also erotic sculptures of couples can be seen on the front wall. However the side and back walls do not have any sculptures. The doorway belongs to a Vaishnava shrine as is indicated by an image of Vishnu on the middle of the lintel. The image in the sanctum represents Gauri with the godha as her vehicle.

India . Famous temples Khajuraho . Part 2 . ( Erotic Sculptures )
The Hindu Temples of Khajuraho, Indian State of Madhya Pradesh, represent the most impressive achievement of the medieval Indian architecture. They were built during the Chandela dynasty (the 10th and 14th centuries) when it was overthrown by Muslim invaders.
Even today, the reason why the Indian temple was adorned with hundreds of erotic scenes is a mystery for the specialists. Some of them claim that the statues symbolize the wedding of the two gods, Shiva and Parvati, an idea argued by the many frescoes that represent them. The locals claim that the images symbolize the intimate union between two diametrically opposed symbols - Shiva (conscience and the principle of masculinity) and Parvati (the energy and principle of femininity). Another probable explanation is one that sees in erotic sculptures symbols of fertility, abundance and luck. UNESCO World Heritage Centre

Vishwanatha Temple...Khajuraho series (12)
Vishwanath Temple at Khajuraho ( Dedicated to Shiva) is one of the architectural marvels of the Khajuraho Temple Complex - a UNESCO World Heritage Site and was built by the Chandella king Dhanga in 1002. It was a panchayatana shrine however of the four subsidiary shrines only two in the northeast and southwest corners have survived. Infront temple the six feet high image of nandi is one of the major attractions of the temple. This is the only temple at Khajuraho that has its Nandi-mandapa. The temple is erected on a high platform, comprises an entrance porch (Ardhamandapa), sanctum (Garbhagriha), maha-mandapa and Vestibule (Antarala). This temple has an exquisite marble Shivalinga (it originally housed an emerald lingam) as the main deity. The temple depicts more than 600 rock-images like musician, dancers, deities & erotic couples. The exterior of temple walls are with Apsaras writing letters, playing music and a lovely one plucking a thorn from her foot, women are seen to caress a baby.
Visvanatha Temple in the Khajuraho complex
The Vishvanatha Temple is a Hindu temple in Madhya Pradesh, India. It is located among the western group of Khajuraho Monuments, a UNESCO World Heritage site. The temple is dedicated to Shiva, who is also known as Vishvanatha meaning Lord of the Universe.
The temple is believed to have been commissioned by the Chandela king Dhanga, and was probably completed in 999 CE or 1002 CE. Its architectural style is similar to that of the older Lakshmana Temple and the newer Kandariya Mahadeva Temple. It features several sculptures of various deities, surasundaris (celestial maidens), couples making love, and mythical creatures.
The Vishvanatha site was designed as a panchayatana complex, which comprises one main shrine surrounded by four smaller subsidiary shrines.
The base of the temple has several niches with sculptures of the Saptamatrikas (seven goddesses), Shiva's consort Parvati and a dancing Ganesha.
Fred Kleiner, a professor of art and architecture at Columbia University, believes these sculptures symbolise fertility and propagation of life and serve as auspicious protectors of the sacred temple
