La Fiesta de los Patios de Cordoba - Spain 4K Travel Channel
A Patio is the inner courtyard of a city house, that is typically paved. You enter the Patio through an inconspicuous passageway from the street. Immediately you feel in another world, an oasis of peace, away from the bustle of the city. Most of the Patios have a small fountain and are decorated with a stunning diversity of plants.
A competition between the owner of the patios of Cordoba for the most beautiful courtyard takes place once a year, during the second and third week of May.
The Festival of Patios of Cordoba is an element of the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, appreciated by UNESCO since 2012.
The Patios of Cordoba are distributed over six different neighborhoods of the old town. Approximately 65 Patios are presented to the jury in 2015. Interested people can visit the houses and are warmly welcomed. Unfortunately, since we had only a short stay in Cordoba, we cannot see all of them.
We visit two patios in Juderia-San Francisco and three in Santa Marina-San Augustin.
We go to Judios 6 in Juderia-San Francisco. The more than 300 years old house has a little fountain in the middle of the inner courtyard. Besides innumerable plants that decorate the walls you can see an old sewing machine and various agricultural equipment. A small turtle is looking for a quite place. We were allowed to film the sympathetic owner and her daughter.
Not far away is Judios 21, the former Casa de las Bulas, which is the Zoco (bazar) today. A fountain decorates the spacious inner courtyard which is lined by broad arcades. It is below a staircase to the upper floor. Here you will find the shops of artisan workshops specializing in silverware, jewelry, ceramics and leather ware.
Geraniums, different ferns, an orange tree and a cypress decorate the yard.
Through many narrow lanes full of corners which offer permanently new perspectives as well as shade, we go back to the hotel. On our way we pass the university.
The next day, we turn to the northeast old town and start our walk in the park of the Plaza de Colón. Coincidentally, we encounter our friend and fellow blogger Jeff from New York, who is also visiting various patios. We briefly exchange ideas and then go separate ways, since we are a little slower because of filming.

Das Fest der Patios von Cordoba
Als Patios bezeichnet man, die in der Regel gepflasterten, Innenhöfe der Häuser. Man betritt sie durch einen unscheinbaren Durchgang von der Straße. Sofort fühlt man sich in eine andere Welt versetzt, in eine Oase der Ruhe, fernab von der Hektik der Stadt. Meist besitzen die Patios einen kleinen Springbrunnen und sind mit einer atemberaubenden Pflanzenvielfalt dekoriert.
Einmal im Jahr, während der zweiten und dritten Maiwoche, treten die Besitzer der Patios von Cordoba in einen Wettstreit um den schönsten Innenhof an.
Seit 2012 ist das Fest der Patios von Cordoba ein von der UNESCO anerkanntes Element der Repräsentativen Liste des immateriellen Kulturerbes der Menschheit.
Die Patios von Cordoba sind über sechs verschiedene Teile der Altstadt verteilt. 2015 stellen sich ungefähr 65 Innenhöfe einer Jury. Unabhängig davon können Interessierte die Häuser besuchen und werden freundlich empfangen. Da wir nur einen kurzen Aufenthalt in Cordoba hatten, können wir leider nicht alle besichtigen.
Wir besichtigen zwei Patios in Juderia–San Francisco und in drei in Santa Marina–San Augustin.
In Juderia – San Francisco besuchten wir Judios 6. Das über 300 Jahre alte Haus verfügt über einen kleinen Springbrunnen in der Mitte des Innenhofes. Neben den unzähligen Pflanzen, die die Wände schmücken kann man eine alte Nähmaschine und verschiedene landwirtschaftliche Geräte besichtigen. Neben einer kleinen Schildkröte durften wir auch die sympathische Besitzerin und ihre Tochter filmen.
Nicht weit entfernt ist Judios 21. Das ehemalige Casa de las Bulas ist heute der Zoco, ein Bazar. Auch hier ziert den geräumigen Innenhof, der von breiten Arkaden eingesäumt ist, ein Springbrunnen. Er liegt unterhalb eines Treppenaufgangs ins Obergeschoss. Hier findet man die Geschäfte der handwerklichen Werkstätten, spezialisiert auf Silberwaren, Schmuck, Keramik- und Lederwaren.
Geranien, verschieden Farne, ein Orangenbaum und eine Zypresse zieren den Hof.
Wir gehen erst einmal zurück zum Hotel, durch viele enge, verwinkelte Gassen, die nicht nur ständig neue Perspektiven, sondern auch Schatten bieten. Dabei passieren wir auch die Universität.
Am nächsten Tag wenden wir uns der nordöstlichen Altstadt zu und beginnen unseren Rundgang im Park des Plaza de Colón. Zufällig begegnen wir hier unserm Freund und Blogger-Kollegen Jeff aus New York, der ebenfalls gerade verschiedene Patios besucht. Wir tauschen uns kurz aus und gehen dann getrennte Wege, da wir des Filmens wegen immer etwas langsamer sind.

We began our 1st tour of the annual Cordoba Patio Festival, in Cordoba, Spain, by visiting the tribute sculpture by local artist José Manuel Belmonte. It was installed on the Puerta del Rincón.
The first tour was an unusual one compared to most of the many others we saw: I believe it was a prime example of the housing referred to as Solariega Houses where a housing unit is comprised of several smaller houses united as one, similar to bungalow-type of housing. Most other places we toured consisted of one large home, it seemed.

The Cordoba Patios Festival is a historic custom of the Andalusian city of Cordoba. “Patios” translates to courtyards in English and refers to the private courtyards which are hidden behind the walls and gates of the homes in the city. There are few things so typically Spanish as patios. They are the perfect place to relax during the warm summer months and to enjoy a bit of nature right in the city.
Every year in May, Cordoba opens up its beautiful patios to the public and reveals carpets of flowers, handmade Islamic mosaics, striking water features and some of the most beautiful patios in existence. Patios that are normally hidden away behind heavy iron gates for most of the year are suddenly thrust into the public light releasing an exotic scent of jasmine, geraniums, carnations and orange blossom into the air. The Fiesta de los Patios is an event that should not be missed.
