Fairbanks Riverboat Discovery Tour
If you're in Fairbanks, Alaska then I'd highly recommend the Discovery Riverboat Tour. This attraction on an authentic sternwheeler riverboat stops off at a Chena Indian village where you see a few demonstrations and then can walk the grounds. The tour also has a bush pilot demonstration where a float plane takes off and lands right by the boat, which was pretty dramatic. The boat stops in front of the late 4 time Iditarod champion Susan Butcher's kennels and you are seen a dog sled team training exercise. All during the Riverboat cruise the guide informs you about the area including geographical, cultural and historical points of interest. If you like this Fairbanks Riverboat Discovery Tour video then make sure to give it a thumbs up!
Dog Mushing Experience at the Ice Park
New at the Ice Park this year is the Dog Mushing experience. You can ride in a sled pulled by a world class dog team owned by Dave Munson of the famous Trail Breaker Kennels. The loop is only a mile long and takes about 15 minutes but it is an experience you won't want to miss. As you can see in the video the dogs are friendly and anxious to go. Musher on our trip, Laura Allaway, ran and completed The Northern Lights 300, The Copper Basin 300 and the Tustumena 200 Races in Alaska. She is now qualified to run the Iditarod in 2014. Laura now lives in Fairbanks and works at Trail Breaker Kennels, which is own by David Munson, whose wife, Susan Butcher was the only woman to win the Iditarod four times.
To make this video we put Yelena in the sled and I drove a snowmobile in front with Brian our cameraman riding behind me backwards holding the camera. Look closely and you can see us out in front of the team.

Surviving Alone in Alaska
Heimo Korth is the last man standing in 19 million acres of Alaskan wilderness. His neighbors are polar bears and caribous. Say good bye to civilization and see how they do it in the arctic circle on the last frontier in America.
In 1980, Jimmy Carter established the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge in the Alaskan Interior, cutting off 19 million acres of prime boreal wilderness from the mitts of fur trappers, oil tycoons, and would-be lodge owners alike. Only six families of white settlers were grandfathered in and allowed to keep cabins in the refuge—of them, only one still stays there year-round living off the land. His name is Heimo Korth, and he is basically the Omega Man of Americas Final Frontier.

Seeing Alaska in the Winter
There's nothing like Alaska in the winter. If you've never been, it's a completely different state in than in the summer and not to be missed. Here's a quick look at what you'll see on the slopes of Alyeska with my 7 year old. ;-)

The Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race begins this weekend in Alaska.
The nearly 1,000 mile trek will take competitors from Anchorage to Nome, which is on the state's western coast.
One musher competing is Scott Janssen, who owns several funeral homes in Alaska, earning him the nickname the Mushing Mortician.
Janssen has been mushing since 2007 and finished his first Iditarod in 2011.
While training, he showed off some of the gear he'll use on the course.
The important thing is the gear you need going down the trail to keep yourself as comfortable and safe as possible, because the dogs will take care of you but you need to take care of the dogs, said Janssen.
And taking care of the dogs means bringing along snacks.
Typically pieces of meat that are cut up, and they're cut small enough so the dogs can be able to use the leverage of their jaws to chew it up, and to eat it quickly along the trail, said Janssen.
And the dogs will need the fuel, Janssen says the average weight of his sled alone at the beginning of the race is close to 120 pounds.

Yukon Husky Adventure Wilderness Camp
There is an air of serenity about getting ready to hit the trail after an overnight stay at a wall-tent camp in the Yukon wildernesss. Dog sledding is not only about the trip itself, but also about the wisdom gained while journeying with huskies -- and our companions who may have come all the way from Australia, New Zealand, the United KIngdom, Germany, Austria, Switzerland or from elsewhere in Canada.
Travellers experience a sense of getting back to the basics here, in an environment with conditions that may differ from what participants might experience where they usually live. Nature and its rythms rule here. In the winter, daylight is certainly more scarce around mid-December than in other more southerly parts of the world. The dogs... they just want to play with us, with the knowledge that they are well looked after even in the wilderness. They are well-fed, their paws are groomed, the huskies are kept healthy because they need to be kept happy if the trip is to be enjoyed by all.
So... on we go...to the next destination for the day!

About Life Below Zero:
Life Below Zero follows six people as they battle for the most basic necessities in the state with the lowest population density in the United States. Living at the ends of the world's loneliest roads and subsisting off the rugged Alaskan bush, they battle whiteout snow storms, man-eating carnivores, questionable frozen terrain, and limited resources through a long and bitter winter. Some of them are lone wolves; others have their families beside them. All must overcome despairing odds to brave the wild and survive through to the spring. And when spring arrives in Alaska, rising temperatures bring mounting challenges as they work to prepare for yet another winter.

Frozen Alaskan river turns into human bowling lane!
What do you do if you&r're a kid at a festival on the frozen Chena River in Alaska? You participate in Moose Turd Bowling, of course! What is this madness you say? It's one of the very unique ways Alaskans (and their kids) enjoy the winter months.

There is a carnival-like atmosphere every year as these events are held in downtown Fairbanks, in the interior part of the state. Temperatures on this day dipped down to -20 and -30 below zero. That never stops hearty Alaskans from getting out and enjoying the fun. One of the favorites is Moose Turd Bowling. Alaskans have an odd relationship with our friends the moose, as well as their strange, pellet shaped turds left in piles around the state. And to celebrate that, an inner tube, a giant rubber band, and 10 inflatable plastic bowling-pin-sized turds (plus a little grownup help) are all you need for a little fun on the ice!

Alaska-Riverboat Discovery III
One of the most popular things to do in Fairbanks is take a cruise on the Chena River aboard the Riverboat Discovery 3. One of the highest rated attractions of any kind in the country, it's been owned and operated by generations of the Binkley Family. On the tour you see great river scenes, a float plane take off and landing, Susan Butcher family sled dogs and a recreation of a Native Alaskan Village.
