Inter-Korean peace park's fate in the balance
A proposed peace park, straddling the border between North and South Korea, is under threat. The park would be inside the Demilitarised Zone and, if completed, would be a big step in building trust between the two sides, which are still technically at war. However, lack of agreement between the two sides has put the project's fate in the balance.
Al Jazeera's Harry Fawcett reports from Paju on the North-South Korean border.

STORYLINE
South Korean religious leaders departed Seoul on a peace mission to North Korea on Wednesday.
The leaders, from seven different religious groups, are visiting the North in an effort to resume non-governmental cooperation between the two Koreas.
The 24-member delegation from Korea''s seven largest religions, including Roman Catholics, Protestants and Buddhists, will first fly to Shenyang in China before continuing on to Pyongyang later in the day.
Before their departure, Kim Hee-joong, Archbishop of Gwangju Hyginus, and head of Korea Conference of Religion for Peace, said that the religious leaders believed that North Korea''s was food situation was in a critical condition.
We also hope to contribute somewhat in both Koreas becoming one mind for unification and in opening a new history of reconciliation, exchanges and cooperation, he added.
During their four-day trip, members of the delegation are expected to meet their North Korean counterparts for joint prayer meetings calling for peace in the Korean peninsula.
They are also planning to fly to Mount Paektu in the northern part of North Korea, considered a sacred mountain, and the highest peak on the Korean peninsula.
It is the first time leaders from seven different religions have travelled to North Korea together.
The South Korean Unification Ministry gave rare permission for this trip to take place, in spite of heightened tension between the two Koreas.
Last year, North Korea shelled a South Korean front-line island, killing four, and allegedly torpedoed a South Korean warship, killing 46.

S. Korea celebrates 4.27 inter-Korean summit anniversary at Panmunjeom on Saturday
To mark the one-year anniversary of South and North Korea's Panmunjeom Declaration,... Seoul held a commemorative event at the border village yesterday.
In attendance were foreign diplomats to South Korea, local residents... and artists from South Korea, the U.S., Japan and China.
Our Oh Jung-hee has this report.
South Korea held a special event on Saturday at the Southern side of the inter-Korean border village of Panmunjeom,... to celebrate the one-year anniversary of the Panmunjeom summit on April 27th.
Titled The Long Road, the event aimed to remind people,... that even though we still stand far from peace, the road to peace has to be taken.
This is the road to peace that's been taken by both South and North Korea together. As years go by, we will be able to experience irreversible peace and co-prosperity on the Korean Peninsula.
Special stages were set up at several locations around Panmunjeom where Moon and Kim had met.
Artists from South Korea, the U.S., Japan and China put on art and music performances.
It was impressive to see the world's most renowned artists here at the Joint Security Area. Inter-Korean relations are now at an impasse, but I hope we could create another atmosphere where South and North Korea can freely interact with each other, as they did last year.
However, Saturday's event was not a joint one with North Korea,... and the North had not been part of the planning efforts.
Seoul notified Pyeongyang on Monday that a commemorative event was taking place,... but Pyeongyang did not respond.
Seoul says it would have been better if the two Koreas had held a joint event,... but there were situational reasons why they couldn't.

President Park honors fallen, calls for national unity in Memorial Day address
Marking the 61st Memorial Day,... a national ceremony was held this morning to remember the fallen heroes.
President Park Geun-hye, who just came home from her trip to Africa and France, was there to give an address.
Song Ji-sun starts us off... with the president's message.
President Park paid tribute to the nation's fallen heroes during her speech on Memorial Day at the Seoul National Cemetery on Monday.
She expressed the nation's gratitude to those who fought in the Korean War... and those who fought for Korea's independence against Japan's colonization.
She also expressed regret for the divided Korean peninsula, saying that North Korea's pursuit of nuclear weapons is the biggest obstacle standing in the way of a unified Korea,... posing a threat to regional and global peace.
Pointing to North Korea's recent claim of being a nuclear state, made at its Workers' Party congress last month, President Park warned once again that the regime's nuclear and missile development will only lead to further isolation... and stronger pressure... from the outside world.
In close cooperation with the international community, the South Korean government will continue to press and sanction North Korea until it chooses the path of denuclearization and returns to dialogue.
The president pledged to firmly respond to any provocation from the North and vowed to further strengthen the country's defense readiness in alliance with the United States.
With representatives from the country's rival political parties present at the ceremony,... President Park also issued a call for unity.
There cannot be opposition parties, regions or generations in national security. We must unite as one to close the chapter of division and open the path to peace and unification on the Korean peninsula.
In her first public appearance since returning from a twelve-day trip to Africa and France,... President Park also pledged to expand benefits for war veterans and secure quality jobs for retired soldiers.

S. Korea helping bring peace and prosperity to war-afflicted ASEAN regions
South Korea and ASEAN countries along the Mekong River have many similarities including their war-torn past in the second half of the 20th Century. Korea's official aid agency is aiming to ramp up efforts to bring peace and prosperity to ASEAN countries with greater development cooperation.
Oh Soo-young reports.
Removing the remnants of war along the Mekong River,... South Korea is aiming to restore the land for generations to come.
Korea's official aid agency KOICA has been helping clear landmines from countries that were affected by the Indochina Wars.
More than two-hundred-and-twenty thousand people have been injured or killed by the explosives since the 1960s,... across Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam and Myanmar in particular.
In those countries, KOICA is supporting locals affected by war, replacing the former conflict zones with peace villages.
This initiative encompasses 3 P values: People, Peace and Prosperity and it's receiving great attention and expectations from the government and people of the partner countries in the Mekong region.
The country's official aid agency KOICA on Monday signed MOUs with Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, the Philippines and Vietnam to strengthen cooperation in areas.
ASEAN countries are included in KOICA's high priority partner countries. Following the government's New Southern Policy, KOICA plans to double the ODA volume to those countries in the next five years. We also aim to enhance the effectiveness of development cooperation by focusing on 5 areas of : digital partnership, higher education, rural development, smart cities and transportation.
Korea's Official Development Assistance to the five countries and Indonesia has grown from 86-point-7 million U.S. dollars in 2011 to 115-point-8 million dollars in 2017.
Its flagship projects include rural development, ICT training and infrastructure, education, women's empowerment and leadership as well as public policy.
Since 1991,... KOICA has expanded its operations to 44 offices around the globe, implementing diverse development projects, training, and overseas volunteering programs.
South Korea soon celebrates its 10 year anniversary of its transition from a recipient of international aid to an official donor country in 2009.

[Peace & Prosperity] Ep.19 - Korean Peninsula embroiled in a web of disputes
▶ Korean Peninsula embroiled in a web of disputes ▶
Chinese and Russian military aircraft entered South Korea's air defense identification zone, or KADIZ, without authorization, with one of the Russian planes violating South Korean airspace. Why are China and Russia strengthening ties including on the military front, and what is behind Russia’s intrusion of South Korea’s airspace? Will the Abe administration change its policy towards Seoul now that Japan’s House of Councilors election is over? Meanwhile, North Korea fired two short-range ballistic missiles on July 31st. How should Seoul respond to the quickly changing dynamics in the region? We are joined by Park Won-gon, Professor of International Studies at Handong Global University, to take a closer look at the latest developments. We also connect with Harry J. Kazianis, Senior Director for Korea studies at the Center for the National Interest, David Maxwell, Senior Fellow at the Foundation for Defense of Democracies, and Jung Dae-jin, Professor at the Ajou Institute of Unification, to broaden the perspective.

[Arirang Special] The 21st Century Iron Silk Road (EP.3) - The Road to Peace
The 21st Century Iron Silk Road (EP.3) - The Road to Peace 21
The Silk Road, where exchange of the Eastern and Western civilizations took place 2,000 years ago. The road is now a railway! Arirang TV is launching a special documentary series on the 21st Iron Silk Road, filmed in 13 cities of South Korea, China and North Korea. Ep.3 'The Road to Peace' focuses on the Iron Silk Road, which used to be tainted with the greed of the imperialistic powers, and the history of Korean and Chinese struggles dating back to a century ago.
A group of people singing together at Lu Xun Park, Shanghai. It is the anthem of the People's Liberation Army of China, the song every Chinese learns in school and is proud of. Interestingly, the composer is not Chinese—he is a Korean named Jeong Yul-seong, the godfather of Chinese revolutionary music and one of the three best revolutionary musicians in China. Why did he go to China? In the early 20th century, many young Koreans left to China to participate in the independence movement and escape the suppression. Jeong, who lived in Gwangju, Jeollanam-do Province, Korea, was one of them. He headed for China in 1933 to participate in the anti-Japanese movement and composed many famous pieces.
Independence activists in China established the provisional government in Shanghai, one of the concession areas of foreign powers. Here, an event that enhanced the government's prestige occurred—the patriotic death of Yun Bong-gil. Yun threw a bomb disguised as a water canteen in the middle of the celebration of a victory day and birthday of the Japanese emperor held at Lu Xun Park. The resulting explosion killed and injured 7 high-rank officers of the Japanese army. The Chinese press at the time widely reported the incident to inform the international society of the atrocities of Japan and appeal for support for Korea.
The early 20th century, when the invasions of foreign powers were growing in intensity for territorial expansion. The railway served as a means of exploitation and invasion but also as the road of struggle for peace. The patriotic death of An Jung-geun at Harbin Station also greatly inspired the Chinese people. In celebrating the 100th anniversary of the establishment of the Korean provisional government, let's look back on the past 100 years and into the future 100 years of the Iron Silk Road.

Students from Korea, Japan and China gather in Gwangju for youth exchange
Korea, Japan and China have rather complicated relationships with one another, affected by centuries of historical conflicts and disputes.
But student representatives from the three countries are trying to look beyond the differences
Our Park Ji-won reports.
These teenagers from three different countries, Korea, China and Japan, are laughing as they play games together.
They may not understand one another because of the language barrier, but that isn't stopping them from enjoying themselves.
History shows us numerous conflicts between our countries, but actually meeting these people gave me fresh ideas about friendship.
Neither English nor Japanese work here, but it's great that we can have so much fun beyond the language barrier.
The events are fun and the people here are very kind. I hope this can be an opportunity to promote mutual friendship and erase prejudices we might have against one another.
This program is part of an annual education tourism forum organized by the governments of the three countries.
It was launched in 2006 to nurture a global mindset in the hearts of the young.
Over the past few decades,... Germany and France have organized exchanges of about seven million students. They've turned once hostile memories of war into a new cooperative relationship. I believe Korea, Japan and China can make a new road into the peaceful future through the active engagement of student exchanges.
Organizers hope the opportunity provides participating students a chance to develop a global perspective and builds mutual understanding. Park Ji-won, Arirang News, Gwangju.

Vienna Boys Choir come to S. Korea
The Vienna Boys Choir are here in South Korea for their first tour of the year.
The twenty-five members hail from various corners of the globe... but one of them is feeling right at home.
Kan Hyeong-woo has the full story.
The angelic voices of the Vienna Boys Choir sound off positive energy for listeners.
The world's most well-known boys choir has come to South Korea for their first tour of 2020.
Their repertoire includes Gregorian chant, Astro Piazzolla's Libertango and popular songs from musicals and films.
The message we are trying to deliver is peace. Music should play the role of communicator among people.
Established in 1498,... the Vienna Boys Choir is one of the most enduring symbols of Austria.
It's divided into four sub-choirs which are named after famous Austrian composers associated with the choir's history Bruckner, Haydn, Mozart and Schubert.
The Bruckner choir, and its 25 boys, is the one that's visiting Korea.
Aged eight to fourteen,... the boys are from all around the world, but one of them has found a special meaning this time Korean soprano Park Si-yu.
Just the fact that I can sing in front of people is a great joy to me.
Since last Saturday, the boys have performed in Changwon, Gwangju and Gangneung.
They will wrap up their tour to South Korea this weekend with two more shows at the Lotte Concert Hall in Seoul.

Less than 3 months to go until South Korea hosts one of the world's top-five major sporting events, the World Aquatics Championships.
The official uniforms and medals are revealed.
Won Jung-hwan takes us to the unveiling ceremony.
The official uniform for this year's World Aquatics Championships has been shown to the public for the first time.
The organizing committee of the 2019 FINA World Championships held an official uniform fashion show on Wednesday in Seoul,… to reveal what referees, volunteers and safety guards will wear during the 17-day global sporting event, which starts on July 12th.
The semi-formal uniforms in bright colors, inspired by the host city,… were showcased for the first time to the public, letting the global fans know that Gwangju is a metropolitan city full of vitality and excitement.
As many people will know, Gwangju is a city of peace and human rights. So we have tried to show the image of freedom and equal human rights in the uniforms.
Famous figures including actor Sung Hoon, one of the honorary ambassadors of the Summer sports event, had a chance to try on one of the uniforms,… expressing their delight with the fitting and style.
Along with the uniforms, the medals that swimmers will be competing for were also revealed for the first time.

Sneak peek at FINA World Championships Gwangju 2019
Time now for our Life & Info segment,... where we focus on information useful for your everyday life.
Today we are going to talk about the upcoming World Swimming Championships that will take place in Korea's southwestern city of Gwangju.
We have our Kan Hyeong-woo in the studio to tell us more.
Hyeong-woo, it's always exciting when a big international sporting event comes to Korea, give us some of the details.
Well Mark, the world's biggest biennial swimming competition is set to take place in Gwangju as you just said.
The FINA World Championships will officially begin next Friday, July 12th and run until the 28th.
It's the first time South Korea is hosting the global swimming competition.
and Gwangju is setting records for the most number of participating athletes and countries.
Almost three-thousand athletes from about two-hundred countries will compete at the FINA World Championships.
So over the course of seventeen days,... the athletes will compete in swimming, diving, high diving, artistic swimming, open water swimming and water polo at five different venues in Gwangju and Yeosu.
Just in case artistic swimming sounds unfamiliar to you, it used to be called synchronized swimming.
In the meantime,... the organizing committee says it's still waiting on North Korean athletes to participate in the competition and it's going to wait until the very last minute before the opening ceremony next Friday.
But if they show up,... won't it affect the match schedule and the seedings?
The committee says it shouldn't be that big of a problem, as North Korea usually takes part in diving and artistic swimming... both of which aren't schedule-sensitive.
So we'll have to wait and see whether they decide to come to Gwangju.
But as far as the competition itself,... does South Korea have any medal hopefuls?
Unfortunately, South Korea's biggest swimming star Park Tae-hwan,... who won a gold medal in the 400-metre freestyle at the 2008 Beijing Olympics,... is not participating in this year's swimming championships.
But hopes remain alive with Kim Seo-yeong.
She won gold in the women's 200-meter individual medley at the 2018 Jakarta-Palembang Asian Games,... setting a new Korean and Asian Games record time,... and also took the silver medal in the 400-meter individual medley.
We actually got to meet with her last month at the Donga Swimming Competition,... where the 25-year-old said her goal in Gwangju is to challenge for the world record.
I was preparing for this upcoming championship since the Asian Games last year. Whether the time remaining is short or long,… I will get my fitness up step-by-step to get a good result in the end.
Well Hyeong-woo, let's hope to hear some good news from Gwangju soon.
Now,... as the world's biggest swimming competition,... it's sure to draw many spectators from around the world.
And I hear, there are many events being held to keep the participants and visitors entertained.... aside from what's happening in the pool.
Yes, indeed. From traditional Korean music to a multicultural street festival,... many events and performances have been prepared for visitors to Gwangju... on the sidelines of the swimming competition.
According to the organizers,... a 'market street' will be operated at Nambu University - the main venue of the FINA championships - from opening day,... featuring many different performances and also food trucks.
Traditional art groups in Gwangju will collaborate to offer fushion style performances.
Originally performing on Saturdays at the city's main arts center,... they will be putting on a show every day except for Monday during the competition.
The Gwangju Fringe Festival will be bigger than normal,... hosting multicultural street parades and mime shows.
Well Hyeong-woo, I guess that will do it for now. Thank you for coming in today.
Always a pleasure. Thank you.
Now let's take a quick look at some other events that are taking place across South Korea.

today, June sixth, marks Korea's 58th Memorial Day, a national holiday in commemoration of the fallen heroes who sacrificed their lives while serving the country.
President Park Geun-hye attended a memorial ceremony this morning and vowed to do her best to lay down the foundation to create a peaceful Korean peninsula.
Our presidential correspondent Eoh Jin-joo reports. President Park pledged to open a new era of peace and hope on the Korean peninsula,. and called on Pyongyang to join in on her efforts to do so.

STORYLINE:
Myanmar's opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi met on Tuesday in Seoul with Park Geun-hye, who takes office next month as South Korea's first female president.
The two expressed hopes that their nations would cooperate to spread peace and prosperity in the region.
The meeting between two of the most prominent women in Asia highlighted a tragic coincidence in their family history: Suu Kyi's father, the independence hero General Aung San, was killed by assassins in 1947 while Park's, President Park Chung-hee, was assassinated by his intelligence chief in 1979.
Both women have benefited from their late fathers' reputations, but have also lived under the weight of their political legacy.
I know what it is like to live putting nation before family, Park told Suu Kyi.
Suu Kyi's trajectory has been one of a dissident, while Park has built a political career as a ruling party lawmaker owing much to her father, a dictator who took power in a 1961 coup and ruled South Korea with an iron fist until he was killed 18 years later.
Democracy has firmly taken root in South Korea since the death of Park's father and a peaceful transfer of power more than a decade later.
In Myanmar, however, democracy is fragile, with a reformist government in place but the military still in the background.
The meeting between Suu Kyi and Park is the latest in a series of high-profile exchanges between their countries, including reciprocal visits last year by South Korean President Lee Myung-bak and Myanmar's President Thein Sein, both heading delegations keen on bolstering economic cooperation.
Thein Sein also promised Lee in May that his country would no longer purchase arms from North Korea, a foreign policy shift welcomed by Seoul.
During her five-day trip, Suu Kyi is scheduled to attend the opening of the Special Olympics, a biennial global event that South Korea is hosting in the alpine town of Pyeongchang for the first time, organisers of her trip say.
The 1991 Nobel Peace Prize laureate will then receive a human rights award in the city of Gwangju, where a 1980 uprising was crushed with deadly force by the then-military government.

Cultural events in Gwangju on sidelines of 2019 World Aquatics Championships
We are nearly a week in to the world aquatic championships in Korea's southwestern city of Gwangju.
The city's under the global spotlight, and with so many people in town for it, there's a big variety of cultural events to enjoy on the sidelines.
Lee Min-sun in Gwangju with more.
At Gwangju's Nambu University, the main venue for the 2019 World Aquatics Championships, promotional booths have been set up with various cultural programs for visitors to experience and learn more about Korean culture.
Gwangju and its surrounding Jeolla provinces are well known in South Korea for their local delicacies.
For international visitors to get a unique taste of Korea,... a local traditional food organization has prepared an exhibition displaying ceremonial table settings for various rites of passage.
Since Gwangju is hosting an international sporting event, we prepared traditional ritual tables for everything from birth celebrations to wedding ceremonies so we can promote Korea's food culture. Locally-prepared food and seven dishes that represent Gwangju were selected. I hope visitors taste all of them.
The booths are not for eyes only, visitors can also enjoy some hands-on experiences.
Athletes here for the championships can get a unique glimpse of Korean culture, scoop up some souvenirs and more importantly: take home some unforgettable memories.
We are from germany and we are water divers. We had chance to look around maybe have a view of the culture and what it’s different to Germany our home country. It’s very interesting to have look to the other culture you have here.
Between the competitions we have little bit of time to go out in front of the pool and can see lot of things what they do here and we got some gifts from Korea. I really like it to go around the pool.
Visitors can also chill at an outdoor beer festival and enjoy Korean street food from food trucks at a nearby convention center.
The beer festival will run throughout this weekend and for another week in August.
Dance and music performances are also lined up at the athletes' village and at other main venues during the weekends.
Local artists have also put together an art exhibition to celebrate the 2019 World Aquatics Championships being held in their part of the world.
An exhibition called Dive Into You displays around 40 paintings and art pieces by 13 emerging artists from the area to celebrate the international event.
Young artists channel their imagination and artistic flare to give international visitors a clearer idea about what Gwangju and its people are all about.
This art exhibition will run until July 28th at Eunam Art Center and is open to all visitors, free of charge.

President Park calls for dialogue with North Korea, while keeping security postu
President Park Geun-hye has called for South Korea to re-open dialogue with North Korea, while maintaining a firm security posture amid threats from the North.
At a ceremony to appoint new members of the National Unification Advisory Council, she said Seoul is ready to discuss anything, and that it′s time the leadership in Pyongyang come to the negotiating table to find the best ways for the two Koreas to co-exist.
While urging the North to give up its nuclear development program, President Park said South Korea is prepared to assist the regime if it does forgo its nuclear arms.
Let′s listen to what she said.
″If North Korea decides to give up its nuclear arms, it will be able to secure peace, regime stability and economic development. South Korea is seeking various economic projects the two Koreas can cooperate on during the North′s disarmament process.″
Stressing that South Korea will need to end 70 years of division in order to further its position in the world, the president asked the council to lead her government′s efforts to prepare for a peaceful unification.
S. Korean swimming hopefuls fine-tune their form ahead of World Championship
A local swimming competition rich in history kicked off today in Gwangju.
It's made all the more meaningful as the city of lights will also play host to the 2019 World Aquatics Championship.
Our Won Jung-hwan is there to meet up with the stars set to shine bright.
Since its establishment in 1929, the Donga Swimming Competition has been producing top Korean swimmers like Jo O-ryeon, Choi Yun-hui, and Park Tae-hwan.
And for the fourth year in a row, the competition is being held at the country's swimming Mecca, Gwangju.
Here at Nambu University International Swimming Pool, one of world-class venues which will be used for the 2019 Gwangju World Aquatics Championships,... 1-thousand-400 athletes will compete in racing, diving, water polo, and artistic swimming events.
The World Aquatics Championship is just less than 40 days away, and the organizers are using this competition as a dress rehearsal.
Korea's swimmers are doing the same,… fine-tuning their form ahead of the global event.
The venues were under construction up until just a few days ago,... and I participated in today's competition because I wanted to see how the pool has changed,... and I wanted to test the water as much as possible before the Gwangju championship.
Kim Seo-yeong is one of Korea's best hopes for a medal. At last year's Asian Games, she won gold in the women's 200-meter individual medley, setting a new Korean and Asian Games record time. She also won silver in the 400-meter individual medley.
The 25-year-old said her goal in Gwangju is to break her own national record and even go for the world record.
I was preparing for this upcoming championship since the Asian Games last year. Whether you see the time remaining is short or long,… I will get my fitness up step by step to get a good result in the end.
And Kim isn't the only swimmer who is dreaming of getting their name in the hall of fame.
Im Da-sol swam a personal best in the women's 100-meters back in April's national team draft competition. Her time of 1-minute-zero-seconds-44 was also a Korean record, and she says if she is at peak fitness, she will be aiming for a podium finish at the World Championship.
As the championship is held right here in Gwangju, my goal is to quickly get used to the water. I still feel I lack many things but if I can strengthen my weaknesses through these practices, I think I can reach the medal range at the championship.
With the World Championship just around the corner,… fans here at the Donga Swimming Competition may just be getting a first look at some future world champions.
