Twin Peaks, also known as Twin Peaks: The Return, is an American mystery horror drama television series created by Mark Frost and David Lynch, and directed by Lynch. It is a continuation of the 1990–91 ABC series of the same name. Developed and written by Lynch and Frost over several years, the limited series consists of 18 episodes and premiered on Showtime on May 21, 2017. An ensemble of returning and new cast members appear, led by original star Kyle MacLachlan.Set 25 years after the events of the original Twin Peaks, the series follows multiple storylines, many of which are associated with FBI Special Agent Dale Cooper and his investigation into the murder of Twin Peaks homecoming queen Laura Palmer decades earlier. It takes place in a variety of settings beyond the fictional Washington State town of Twin Peaks, including Las Vegas, South Dakota, Philadelphia, and New Mexico. Showtime president David Nevins said that the core of [the series] is Agent Cooper's odyssey back to Twin Peaks.The series garnered critical acclaim, with praise centering on its unconventional narrative and structure, visual invention, and performances. Many publications, including Rolling Stone, The Washington Post, and Esquire, named it the best television show of 2017. The film journals Sight & Sound and Cahiers du cinéma named The Return the second-best and best film of the year respectively, sparking discussion about the artistic difference, if any, between theatrical film and TV series in the era of streaming.

The Open Cut Experience

The Peak Hill Gold Mine is located 50 kilometres North of Parkes adjacent to the township of Peak Hill in Central New South Wales.

Gold was discovered at Peak Hill in 1889. The historic gold mine operated between 1893 and 1917, producing about 60,000 ounces from 500,000 tonnes of rock. ‘Alkane’ recommenced operations and excavated for gold on the site between 1996 and 2002, retrieving 145,000 ounces from 4.9 million tonnes.

The 'Open Cut Experience' includes both the historic works and the more recent mines. Self-guided walking trails have been constructed, providing rest areas and viewing platforms to enable visitors the opportunity to see five impressive open cuts and the views from the hilltop are particularly spectacular. A bridge walk over historic mine workings that 'Alkane’ has managed to preserve is also very interesting.

Since the closure of the mine, considerable effort has been made to rehabilitate the landforms across the expansive site, which has substantially been achieved. Infrastructure and wet plant (gold recovery circuit and ponds) and office remain preserved at the site.

The mining leases are to be either renewed or relinquished in 2022.
