Beyond Image and Dreams: Gatot Pujiarto Solo Exhibition in Pearl Lam Galleries - Shanghai
Gatot Pujiarto was born in 1970 in Malang, East Java, Indonesia. He graduated from the Department of
Fine Art and Design at IKIP Malang in 1995. Currently, the artist lives and works in Malang.
Pujiarto’s works explore abnormalities, weirdness, and tragedy. They are inspired by uncommon events
or occurrences in everyday life, including stories heard from friends, TV shows, and the news. His works
amuse and provoke audiences to reinterpret daily stories as a new reality, to enjoy them through evoking
new emotions. The visual sensation in his works is combined with the unique textures that are created
by pasting, patching, layering, tearing, binding, and by making fabric patterns.
Pujiarto’s work has been widely exhibited throughout Indonesia and internationally. Selected exhibitions
include Stitching Stories (2016), Pearl Lam Galleries, Hong Kong SOHO; Masquerade of Life (2015),
Pearl Lam Galleries, Singapore; Shout—Indonesian Contemporary Art (2014), Museo d’Arte
Contemporanea Roma, Rome, Italy; Jatim Art Now (2012), National Gallery of Indonesia, Jakarta,
Indonesia; and Indonesian Contemporary Fiber Art (2012), ArtOne New Museum, Jakarta, Indonesia.
Exhibition: 7 September–1 November 2019 Monday–Sunday, 10:30am–7pm at Venue Pearl Lam Galleries, 181 Middle Jiangxi Road, G/F, Shanghai, China 200002

Fall Into Oblivion: YANG YONGLIANG solo exhibition Presented by Pearl Lam Galleries Singapore
Fall Into Oblivion: YANG YONGLIANG solo exhibition
2 April - 2 May, 2016
Opening Reception on 2 April 2016, 5-7pm.
Yang Yongliang’s multi-disciplinary practice examines cultural and personal memory by highlighting moments of alignment—and discord—between the two. Central to the exhibition is the film of the same name, making its debut in Southeast Asia. Dressed in Kendo armour, the protagonist chases after the tripedal raven’s guide, taking the audience on a journey through a timeless dreamscape. Through his photography and video, the artist exploits a connection between the traditional and contemporary world, implementing ancient classical literati aesthetics with digital language and techniques. The exhibition also sees the artist¹s return to painting, alongside a selection of past works.

[Recap] YANG YONGLIANG: Fall into Oblivion - Opening Talk: Transforming Urban Image and Identity
In conjunction with the exhibition opening of “Fall Into Oblivion”, this talk aims to examine the changing landscape of cites and how urbanisation is challenging the identity of a city. Featuring speakers from diverse backgrounds, Yang Yongliang, Randy Chan and Mark Goh each have their own approach to understanding the phenomena of urbanisation. Artist Yang Yongliang deeply roots his practice in concerns relating to a city’s identity, while Randy Chan and Mark Goh are masterminds of major public projects and are well recognised in both the fields of architecture and contemporary art. This talk weaves a cross-cultural narrative to explore the global tendencies of urban living. The conversation will be moderated by Josef Ng, the exhibition curator.
Speakers:
Yang Yongliang
Artist
Based in Shanghai, the artist is best known for the intricate landscapes he creates by integrating layers upon layers of urban and natural images together. Drawing from his formal education in the art of traditional Chinese shan shui (山水) painting, Yang’s work exudes a strong sense of traditional aesthetics, although he continually engages with the modern through his choice of media and content. Poetic and quaint as they appear from a distance, his landscapes unfold themselves as a fable of the development of modern civilisation upon closer views.
Randy Chan
Director/Principal, Zarch Collectivities
Randy takes a multidisciplinary architectural approach to his projects and specialises in the convergence between art and architecture. He has won numerous awards for his commercial projects and is also actively involved in art projects. His personal works have been exhibited at the Singapore Art Museum and Palais de Tokyo, Paris. He was the Creative Director of Singapore: Inside Out, a travelling showcase which was exhibited in Beijing, London, New York and Singapore in celebration of SG50. He also curated iLight Singapore 2016, which ensembled more than 20 light installations from local and international artists.
Mark Goh
Urban Planner and Art Collector
Mark received his architecture training at Cornell and Columbia University and has been involved in urban planning and development in Singapore for over 15 years. Mark is also a passionate collector with his partner; together, they have built up the MaGMA Collection, which consists of more than 400 works by contemporary artists from China and Southeast Asia. Selected works from the collection have been exhibited in Singapore in 2010 and in Paris in 2014.

YANG YONGLIANG: Fall into Oblivion
Pearl Lam Galleries is pleased to present a solo exhibition by Chinese artist Yang Yongliang, opening on 2 April, 2016. The exhibition is a blend of moving image, photography, and painting, which showcases the expansive size and scope of Yang’s artistic practice. Through his works, the artist examines cultural and personal memory, highlighting moments of alignment—and discord—between the two.
The main highlight, Yang’s full-length film Fall into Oblivion, will make its Southeast Asian debut at the exhibition. Dressed in kendo armour and chasing after a tripedal raven guide, the protagonist in Yang’s film takes the audience on a journey through a timeless dreamscape. The film’s narrative is influenced by Yang’s reading of Tao Yuanming’s “Peach Blossom Spring”, in which the protagonist chances upon a utopian society detached from the urbane world. The armoured kendo warrior is anonymous and stands as a solitary figure amidst a busy metropolis. Though dignified in his armour, his mind is selfenclosed. He is alone and detached from the chaos of urban civilisation. The film also engages with what has been referred to as Zhuangzi’s great dream, where the melding of his lucid dreams as a butterfly with his waking life as a human being leads him to question the existence of any sort of reality.

Exhibition Dates: 2 April–2 May, 2016 Tuesday–Saturday, 11am–7pm; Sunday, 12–6pm
Venue: Pearl Lam Galleries, 9 Lock Road, #03-22, Gillman Barracks, Singapore 108937
Su Dong Ping: 'Landscapes of the Heart'
Su Dong Ping’s (b.1958 Shenyang, China) ‘action paintings’, full of rich contradictions and feelings, consist of thick impasto layered with raw images and a combination of compact and expansive brushwork. His masterful use of black in conjunction with an array of contrasting colours produces strong works that radiate energy. In fact, Su believes that the quality of an artwork should solely be determined by the amount of energy the artist expends in its creation. Although Su’s works share similarities with expressionist traditions, his process is very much rooted in traditional Chinese philosophies and calligraphy.
Tension is at the heart of Su Dong Ping’s works; for him, the act of painting is an emotional and psychological necessity.

In that context, this exhibition aims particularly at lovers of contemporary art. Galleries most active in the contemporary art scene will display a unique, impressive and powerful show.
Those who gathered in this 海上荟 Shanghai Gallery Selection have in common their international involvement, curation capacities, and their readiness to experiment, and to always stand on the forefront, together with artists of their time.
This exhibition has no special theme. However, by bringing together artists and pieces proudly endorsed by the top galleries in Shanghai, it promises to be the place to feel most vibrantly the liveliness of Shanghai's contemporary art scene.

Perfection by Chance — A Yi Pai Series Exhibition
Featuring works by Qin Yufen, Su Xiaobai, Su Xinping, Tan Ping, Yang Zhilin and Zhu Jinshi, curated by the distinguished Professor Gao Minglu.
The theory of ‘Yi Pai’ provides a unique angle to look at Chinese abstract art. Chinese Abstract is a synthesis of traditional and contemporary art. It is not a concept that has directly transplanted and formed from traditional Chinese concepts and it is not a completely abstract concept, but rather a form of abstraction where the abstract, conceptual and reality overlap each other. The exhibiting ‘Yi Pai’ artists have all consciously integrated the Oriental tradition of meditation, essential for maintaining an equilibrium between narration and imagery, and devoted themselves to this philosophy of ‘perfection by chance’, much like the symbiotic relationship in ancient China between poetry, calligraphy.

Choi Jeong Hwa - Peninsula Chicago & Pearl Lam Galleries Art Installation - Unravel Travel TV
The Peninsula Chicago And Pearl Lam Galleries Announce Art Installation With Renowned Korean Artist Choi Jeong Hwa In Conjunction With EXPO CHICAGO. To commemorate the opening of EXPO CHICAGO 2015, the International Exposition of Contemporary & Modern Art, The Peninsula Chicago on the 18th September 2015 unveiled Alchemy, a significant art installation by renowned Korean artist Choi Jeong Hwa and curated by Pearl Lam Galleries. A celebration of Chicago's place at the heart of the global contemporary art scene, the installation will be displayed in The Lobby at The Peninsula Chicago through March 20, 2016, as a part of The Peninsula Hotels' global art and Breast Cancer awareness initiative, The Art of Pink.
Renowned for his colorful installations using materials often sourced in Korean street markets, Mr. Choi has exhibited at the Korean Pavilion at the Venice Biennale, the Hayward Gallery in London and in solo shows at museums worldwide. Alchemy, his site-specific light installation for The Peninsula Chicago, consists of found LED lights, plastic bowls and steel in 24 totem pole pillars. Mr. Choi personally oversaw the installation of the work in the Peninsula's main lobby, the heart and social center of the hotel.
Additionally, in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Mr. Choi has donated one of the pillars from Alchemy for the hotel to auction to raise funds for Chicago's Lynn Sage Cancer Research Foundation.
The partnership with Pearl Lam Galleries is the latest representation of The Peninsula Hotels' ongoing support of innovative public art around the world. The group has collaborated with museums, galleries and private collectors on pioneering works by established masters and emerging artists at Peninsula's 10 hotels in the United States, Asia and Europe. Programs include The Peninsula Hong Kong's partnership with the UK's Royal Academy of Arts to a residency program for emerging contemporary artists at The Peninsula Beijing, to a rotating collection of significant contemporary works on display at The Peninsula New York and art-related Peninsula Academy programs in each hotel.
We hope that this collaboration will contribute to Chicago's position in the international arts community, and the growing recognition of our city as an arts hub, said Maria Razumich-Zec, Regional Vice President and General Manager of The Peninsula Chicago. Ultimately, we would like to realize a dream, which is to showcase pioneering public art that excites, challenges and spurs dialogue.
Pearl Lam, founder of Pearl Lam Galleries said, We are excited to exhibit the dynamic work of Choi Jeong Hwa at The Peninsula Chicago, as it continues the Galleries' mission of encouraging cross-cultural exchange and discussion between the East and West. The aesthetics of Choi's work make it easily accessible to the public, yet there is a great depth beyond the surface. Mr. Choi added: Your heart is my art. Your shopping is my art. Plastic is … immortal.
Promoting Breast Cancer Awareness and Research Through Art
About Choi Jeong Hwa: An artist, architect and designer of furniture and furnishings, Choi Jeong Hwa creates art from the most humble of materials, finding inspiration in soda bottles, shopping bags and colorful plastic dishes. Inspired by the harmony and chaos of the urban environment, he often undermines the hierarchy of the museum by installing his pieces on their exteriors. He created a 10-story installation from 1,000 discarded doors and decorated Seoul's Olympic Stadium with garlands made from 2 million pieces of trash, transforming the building's surface into a glittering jewel. In other pieces, he explores ideas of artificiality and permanence through the use of plastic food and flowers. He declines to categorize his work, leaving the audience to define his pieces on a personal level. As his motto states: My art is your heart.
