Welcome to Kenai Fjords Glacier Lodge
Welcome to the only lodge within the 700,000 acre Kenai Fjords National Park. From this spectacular setting on the shore of a protected lagoon in full view of Pedersen Glacier, wildlife viewing opportunities abound as do activity choices. The lodge and guest cabins reside within the Native-owned, 1,700-acre Pedersen Lagoon Wildlife Sanctuary. Each comfortably appointed log cabin features a private bath and view of the lagoon. As at all Alaska Wildland Adventure locations wilderness fine dining is a highlight at the lodge.

Kenai Fjords National Park is a United States National Park established in 1980 by the Alaska National Interest Lands Conservation Act. The park covers an area of 669,984 acres (1,046.85 sq mi; 2,711.33 km2)[1] on the Kenai Peninsula in southcentral Alaska, near the town of Seward. The park contains the Harding Icefield, one of the largest ice fields in the United States. The park is named for the numerous fjords carved by glaciers moving down the mountains from the ice field. The field is the source of at least 38 glaciers, the largest of which is Bear Glacier. The park lies just to the west of Seward, a popular port for cruise ships. Exit Glacier is reachable by road and is a popular tour destination. The remainder of the park is primarily accessible by boat. The fjords are glacial valleys that have been submerged below sea level by a combination of rising sea levels and land subsidence.
Kenai Fjords National Monument was initially designated by President Jimmy Carter on December 1, 1978, using the Antiquities Act, pending final legislation to resolve the allotment of public lands in Alaska. Establishment as a national park followed the passage of the Alaska National Interest Lands Conservation Act in 1980. The park protects the icefield, a narrow fringe of forested land between the mountains and the sea, and the deeply indented coastline. The park is home to a variety of terrestrial and marine mammals, including black bears, whales (humpback and killer whales), seals and moose.

Kenai Fjords
Established in 1980 by the Alaska National Interest Lands Conservation Act, Kenai Fjords National Park is a United States National Park on the Kenai Peninsula in southcentral Alaska near the town of Seward. The park contains the Harding Icefield, one of the largest ice fields in the United States. The park covers an area of around 1,760 mi2.
The park can be reached from the town of Seward, 130 miles south of Anchorage. The park receives about 250,000 visitors per year and, although it is one of the quieter National Parks, the visitation is quite high for Alaska.
It is only one of three national parks in Alaska that can be reached by the road, at the Exit Glacier entrance. An easy stroll there leads you to the base of an impressive glacier. The other popular way to visit the Park consists in taking day tour on a boat, starting in Seward. Along the way, you get to see marine wildlife, steep fjords, and tidewater glaciers. Other visitation options require extensive planning and backcountry travel.
Fjords are narrow inlets of the sea situated between cliffs or steep slopes. Fjords exist where glaciers once formed on mountains bordering costal areas.

SUMMARY:
- Pedersen Glacier is an outlet glacier located in Kenai Fjords National Park near Seward. The photo taken in 1917 shows that it was an ordinary massive glacier once. No icebergs are visible anymore.
- The Aral Sea in Kazakhstan almost disappeared by 2014 due to the extensive irrigation of cotton fields.
- Lake Oroville was hit hard by the lack of water while California was suffering from a severe drought.
- The photo taken at the same place almost 100 years later shows that the Carroll glacier still exists, but it has serious problems. The ice cap has melted and has been covered with natural debris.
- Powell Lake is an artificial reservoir located on the Colorado River. It’s easy to notice that its water level has reduced over 15 years.
- The rise in temperature from 1950 to 1990 caused the giant Bear Glacier to retreat by one mile. From 2000 to 2005, it moved another two miles.
- Since the 1960s, Amazon rain forests have been actively cut down. According to current estimates, they now have about 80% left. The state of Rondonia in Brazil lost most of its forests.
- Toboggan Glacier covered a large territory once. Unfortunately, like many other glaciers on our planet, this one keeps melting fast. Comparing the two photos, you can see that there is less snow in 2000.
- Qori Kalis Glacier located in the Andes mountains of Peru. Frankly speaking, it's almost impossible to recognize this place nowadays – the difference is truly shocking.
- Mar Chiquita Lake is the biggest salt lake in South America. As you see, it has become smaller in recent years, but the area still looks lush.

Orcas in Kachemak Bay
From our hotel room at the end of the Spit in Homer, Alaska, we had gorgeous views of the mountains of Kachemak Bay. We were also lucky enough to see a pod of four orcas pass quietly in the morning out of the bay, not far from where we were watching.

These areas include a diverse varieties of areas —National Parks, National Monuments, National Memorials, National Military Parks, National Historic Sites, National Parkways, National Recreation Areas, National Seashores, National Scenic Riverways, National Scenic Trails, and others.
