This is Penang, Malaysia ???????? Not what we expected ???? Amazing Street Art + Colonial Tour
We spent the day exploring the colonial city of Georgetown, Penang, Malaysia and found some great things to do while visiting the city.
Penang is an island (and a state in Malaysia) situated on the north west of the country and Georgetown is the historic capital of Penang.
Georgetown is well known for its amazing street art so we started out by going on a hunt for it. A lot of the art is interactive which makes it especially unique.
Penang is also well known for its coffee culture and abundance of coffee shops, so we headed to a really cute coffee shop called Coffee Affairs to have a latte and cappuccino.
After that we headed out to explore the old historic, colonial area of Georgetown where we found the Queen Victoria Memorial Clock Tower, City Hall, and St. George’s Anglican Church, which happens to be the oldest Anglican church in Southeast Asia.
Once we were done there we explored the very busy Little India area of Georgetown where we came across a beautiful Hindu temple called Sri Mahamariamman Temple which happens to be the oldest Hindu Temple in Penang.
We finished our day by visiting the oldest mosque in Penang called Kapitan Keling Mosque.
Penang
Penang – a world renowned exotic holiday destination – was known, once upon a time, as Pulau Pinang or the “Isle of the Betel Nut”. Listed as a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site in 2008, this virgin paradise has no shortage of cultural sights and natural scenery. Nicknamed the Pearl of the Orient, Penang is famous for its soft sandy beaches and is fondly regarded as the food capital of Malaysia. Some of the most interesting sites of Penang include the sandy beaches of Tanjung Bungah, the landscape from the summit of Penang Hill and the vipers in the Snake Temple. The quaint nooks and crannies of Georgetown and the Tropical Spice Garden – the only spice garden in South East Asia – as well as Penang’s many flea markets, pasar malams’, KOMTAR and modern shopping malls also merit a visit.
Places featured:
The Jubilee Clock Tower, in George Town, Penang, Malaysia, is a Moorish-style Jubilee clocktower at the junction of Light Street and Beach Street. Built to commemorate Queen Victoria's 1897 Diamond Jubilee, the tower is sixty feet tall, one foot for each year of Victoria's reign.
Georgetown City Hall The City Hall is the local government headquarters in the city of George Town in Penang, Malaysia. Built by the British, it now serves as the seat of the Penang Island City Council and was previously the seat of the George Town City Council.
Originally completed in 1903 as the Municipal Offices, the building was erected at a cost of 100,000 to relieve the demand for office space at the adjacent Town Hall. The name City Hall dates back to the grant of city status to George Town in 1957.
St. George's Church is a 19th-century Anglican church in the city of George Town in Penang, Malaysia. It is the oldest purpose built Anglican church in Southeast Asia. The church lies within the jurisdiction of the Upper North Archedeaconry of the Anglican Diocese of West Malaysia.
Little India is an enclave within the inner quarters of George Town, Penang. As with other Little Indias elsewhere, the Little India of George Town is lined with shops managed by the Indian Community. It's a place to enjoy a kaleidoscope of colours and sounds, with goods from India spilling to the sidewalks, the smell of various spices in the air and Indian music blaring from loud speakers.
The Kapitan Keling Mosque is a mosque built in the 19th century by Indian Muslim traders in George Town, Penang, Malaysia. It is situated on the corner of Buckingham Street and Pitt Street.

We are arriving at Penang Airport in Malaysia. The Penang Airport code is PEN. This arriving at Penang Airport video will also be useful for those of you who have a Penang Airport Departure as we show both the Arrivals Area and upstairs Departure Area where the Check-in Desks are located.
This Penang Airport Arrival video begins at our plane where we are disembarking our Qatar Airways flight which we have just arrived on from Doha. From this point we make our way through Penang International Airport where we pass through Immigration / Passport Control (not shown as filming is not allowed), we collect our luggage at the Baggage Reclaim, pass through Customs and then through to the Penang Airport Arrivals Area. In the Arrivals Area we show viewers where the Penang Airport Taxi Desk is located, where one can buy 4G Prepaid Cards, the Tourism Malaysia Desk (Malaysia Tourist Board), ATM Bank Machines and where the Currency Exchange Agencies are located.

The oldest portion of the city centre has been designated by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site since 2008.

After a hectic few weeks in the city, Andrew and I headed to Penang Malaysia to get some much needed R&R.
It was such a change of pace from Seoul and we were so happy to have a few days to explore and relax there.
If this city isn't on your travel bucketlist yet, it absolutely should be!

NO ART? Explore George Town + Heritage Festival 2019 (WeWillNomad)
If you are lucky enough to spend a few weeks on the island of Penang one can take your time and explore some sights that usually will just be glanced over on shorter visits.
If you're looking for some inspiration on what to see and do in Penang Island see:
Our visit coincides with the 2019 George Town Heritage Festival which marks the 11th anniversary of George Town’s inscription as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
A few of the historical highlights are the City Hall & Town Hall, The Esplanade (Padang Kota Lama), Fort Cornwallis, The Queen Victoria Memorial Clock Tower, Tanjong City Marina / Church Street Pier and don’t forget to walk just a little further to also see the Clan Jetties. Of all these sights mentioned, only Fort Cornwallis has an entrance fee, although you are free to walk around the outside of the fort which, in our opinion, is more than good enough!
