Pa. Military History Museum proud to call Boalsburg home
By: WJAC Web Staff
BOALSBURG, Pa. -- It's something that Boalsburg residents hear quite a bit from people who visit their community: That there's a lot of history in the small village.
That statement comes as no surprise to the residents, since Boalsburg is widely believed to be the birthplace of Memorial Day. The town also had a rich military history and is home to the Pennsylvania Military Museum.
The museum started as a military officer's club after World War I. The club gathered artifacts and objects brought in by veterans to be placed on display. The land was later turned over to the Commonwealth and become a museum.
Museum Administrator Chuck Smith said the facility has artifacts spanning more than a century. Some of them the museum is lucky to have.
This tank wouldn't be with us because during World War II it would have been scrapped and used for its metal content, but it was hidden under a haystack, Smith said.
The World War I tank was hidden in a Pennsylvania hayfield. It's that Pennsylvania connection that museum curators look for before accepting anything to the displays.
When we do our collecting, somebody offers something, first thing we ask was, 'Was he a Pennsylvanian,' Smith said.
One of the most unmistakable military vehicles got its start in Pennsylvania, and the museum has many of them.
This is one of the original Jeeps, the Bantam. That was built in Butler, Pennsylvania, and was the prototype for all the Jeeps, Smith said.
The land is also an old spot where military training exercises were staged. Many of the soldiers who trained on the grounds were part of the 28th Infantry Division.
Outside of the museum entrance sit big guns that were once on the USS Pennsylvania. They were salvaged out of scrap yard, and it took years of planning to get them to Boalsburg.
Because of that, now there's guns in Arizona from the USS Arizona, and a couple other places, because I occasionally get calls wanting to know exactly how we did it, Smith said.
The museum has many more artifacts, but no space is available for them currently. Soon museum leaders will be working to set up new exhibits.
We are in the process of redoing our exhibits. We're just beginning planning, and one of the first things we're going to do this fall is we're going to have some focus groups, Smith said. We're going to invite people from the community, and we're going to listen to them to get them to tell us what they'd like to see here.
The museum site includes 6.5 acres, which includes the 28th Infantry Division Shrine.
The museum first opened in 1969 and was refurbished and reopened in 2005.
Presently, due to budget state funding constraints, the museum is looking at cutbacks. The organization will continue to look at other ways to secure funding to continue operations.

Military Museum hosts Vietnam War re-enactors
By: Lauren Hensley
BOALSBURG, Pa. -- Dozens gathered at the Military Museum in Boalsburg on Saturday for a chance to learn more about the Vietnam War. History came to life as visitors got to check out a replica of solider camp grounds.
Re-enactors portrayed combat soldiers of the Vietnam era. Visitors got to check out the soldiers' tents and the soldiers demonstrated a tactical patrol ambush. 6 News spoke with one re-enactor -- who is also a Vietnam veteran about why he participated in this event.
It is surprising how young people don't know about Vietnam or don't know about the Second World War or don't know about history. It is a way to keep the history alive, Vietnam veteran Randy Diehl said.
The event continues into Sunday. Visitors can stop by the Military Museum from 10 a.m. until 6.
