Key West Florida, Beautiful Road Trip and Yummy Seafood
If you're making the trip to Miami, you might as well find time to visit Key West, too. Getting there isn't hard, whether you drive yourself, hire a ride, fly or take a boat. And most methods get you there in about three to four hours. Of course, if you drive, lots of other Florida Keys and sightseeing opportunities along the way offer additional memorable experiences.

By Land
The approximately 159-170-mile drive from Miami to Key West is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful in the country. Take your own vehicle or a rental straight down US-1, passing through all the Florida Keys, until the end of the road in Key West. It's a roughly 3 1/2-hour drive. Of course, that assumes you don't have to contend with much traffic; try not to head out of Miami around rush hour. Be careful passing through Big Pine Key, which is a deer refuge.
If you prefer a more hands-off approach to this scenic drive, a number of buses and shuttles run from Miami to Key West.

Duval Street
In the island city of Key West, Duval Street is the hub for sightseeing, attractions, cuisine infused with local flavor, cold libations, and shopping. Teeming with activity, live music, bicyclists, pedicabs, and locals with birds on shoulder, this 1.25-mile stretch is also home to epic people-watching.
Not your average street, Duval Street is one of the few places in the world that touches two bodies of water. At its northern end, which is frequented by tourists and cruise ship passengers, Duval Street meets the warm Gulf of Mexico. At the south end, near the Southernmost Point in the Continental U.S., marked by an oversized buoy that attracts photos around the clock, Duval Street spills into the bright blue waters of the Atlantic Ocean.
The Stoned Crabs

Key West, FL 33040-4118

Sitting right on the water, the open air eatery offers a front row seat to departing kayakers, paddle boarders and boats, while many fish are also in view from tables by the dock. Sea breezes provide the ultimate atmosphere for a restaurant centered around all things ocean.
The Stoned Crab sends out a crew daily to sustainably collect the day’s entrees, and to pluck stone crab claws when in season. Stone crab is the only 100% sustainable meat available, because the crabs release the tasty claw as a defense mechanism, and scamper off into the ocean to regrow the appendage. Connected to the restaurant is also a fresh fish market—talk about a multifunctional place.
Introducing Key West's first restaurant specializing in our favorite local delicacy, stone crab! Fisherman deliver their catches straight to our docks every day, so we have the freshest local seafood the Keys can offer. Stop by for breakfast, lunch, dinner or drinks and see why everyone is calling The Stoned Crab Key West's hottest restaurant! Locals and visitors alike can enjoy The Stoned Crab for freshly caught seafood fare that includes Key West Pinks and Royal Reds Shrimp, conch fritters, fish chowder, stone crab bisque, shrimp scampi, grouper fritters and more.

Key West Downtown Longboard Ride. Get ready for some speed!
I used GoPro on 3 axis gimbal to document my longboard ride in Downtown Key West.
Duval Street (DOO-VAHL) is a famous downtown commercial zoned street in Key West, Florida, running north and south from the Gulf of Mexico to the Atlantic Ocean. From shore to shore, the street is just over a mile in length. It is named for William Pope Duval, the first territorial governor of Florida.
Duval Street was designated a “Great Street” in 2012 by the American Planning Association.American Planning Association, Great Places, 2012 The beautiful Bahamian and Spanish influenced Victorian Mansions of Duval Street have been well preserved through local preservation efforts starting in the 1960s.
On the Atlantic Ocean end of Duval Street there is a mix of early Key West Victorian mansions and bungalows’ dotting the neighborhood. Art galleries, boutiques, inns and Bodega’s line the wide sidewalks. Although this end of Duval is more residential and less filled with tourists, the sidewalks still bustle with activity.
Near the southern terminus of Duval Street is the buoy marker for the southernmost spot in the United States not far from the southernmost House, a striking Victorian architecture mansion built in 1896. A favorite of both Harry Truman and author Ernest Hemingway, the building was restored to its formal beauty and opulence with a $3 million renovation in 1996.
Duval Street well represents the cultural influence of Key West’s proximity and cultural ties to Cuba. Many Cubans immigrated to the area beginning in the late 1860s. At one time, the many cigar stores on Duval gave the city the moniker “Cigar City USA.” There are many pleasant outdoor cafes to enjoy another Cubano influenced product, “Cuban Coffee,” which is espresso made from roasted Cuban Coffee beans with a heavy dose of sugar.
At the north end, tourists from the cruise ships that dock at the Westin harbor complex, Mole pier or Mallory Square are often seen traversing Duval Street's many shops [1] in the afternoon looking for souvenir trinkets and T-shirts. The streets are congested with Pedi cabs, trollies, bikes, mopeds, cars, and the Conch Train all adding to the touristy feel of this heavily visited end of Duval.
Near the northern end of the street is Mallory Square. Historic Mallory Square is the center of Key West’s waterfront. The City of Key West and Duval Street share their beginning along this deep harbor waterfront.
On certain nights, the gulf shores of Duval Street often vibrate with a carnival like atmosphere that lasts until dawn and beyond. In fact, the ritual has a name known to tourists and residents as the “Duval Pub Crawl.” Duval is the location of many famous restaurants and bars, including Sloppy Joe's, Jimmy Buffett's Margaritaville, which is the original, Fogarty's Restaurant, Bar and Bakery, The Flying Monkeys Bar, The Bull and Whistle, Rick's Cafe and Irish Kevin's bar. Tour outlets book the “Duval Pub Crawl” activity and provide knowledgeable guidance for the tourist wishing to visit and imbibe at the famous drinking establishments, for a fee.
A 1967 National Park Service survey of Historic American Buildings designated 18 buildings as historic. A full six blocks were added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1971. Further protection for this historically significant street has been created through the City’s, “Historic Architecture Guidelines,” approved in 2000, which sets standards for construction on Duval Street.
Bottomline at Hemingway House Tour with Larry Harvey in Key West
When I was young I rode my 350 Honda Motorcycle from Warren , Michigan to Key West. My first visit and stop in downtown Miami a bright sunny day at Noon , a Man walked past me carrying the freshly severed head of a woman in one hand and his machette dripping blood still in the other. Walking past a parked car a woman inside had a straight razor to the throat of a man whose lap she was seated in naked. I walked passed them into the restaurant I had stopped to eat in. After leaving the restaurant in Miami I stopped in the Everglades left my bike on the side of the highway to take a whiz, standing in the reeds pants down several Crocidiles hell bent on eating me chased me onto the Highway falling over my bike pants still down around my ankles into highway traffic. I proceeded to the Keys just past the Everglades and a storm hit. a day or so later A Lady Sheriff Ms Strom found me after a hurricane , my bike laying across the key highway. I had climbed underneath the highway and tied myself with my belt to a Steel Girder under the roadway and road the Huricane out between 2 Islands. I made it to Key West that evening. While there in Key West I met Larry Harvey outside the Hemingway home and decided to take his tour of the Hemingway home. the next day Jacques Cousteau had his boat there in the Keys and found a sunken ship with the largest Gold Bullion haul ever found in 5 feet of water right under my feet.the following day I took a swim in the Ocean at noon and my Fellow Detroiters Mr and Mrs Muer disappeared as I was swept out to sea by an Ocean Tide. It took me all day to find Key West and swim back after being swept out . 7 or 8 hours later as the sun was about to set I crawled onto the Beach exhausted and a man walked up to me looked at me with a smile and asked if I was ok. I recognized him,His name was Dick the Bruiser, a wrestler I used to listen to on Friday night Wrestling on Detroit radio in the 50's , he was staying with his mother near Casa Lupita. I am posting this video of my friend Larry Harvey it is the complete last tour he ever gave to me in the Hemingway home when I was a young man Just having turned 30. It was always a good day to be on one of Larry's tours of the Hemingway home. His stories and his songs were always a lot of fun and a lot of history. His singing never ceased to pull a smile from my soul. I was sad to read yesterday the following in a Key West Paper online:
Tour guide and Singer Larry Harvey dead at 91
Harvey, a former educator and world traveler who came to Key West nearly 42 years ago, spent most of his years on the island in various capacities at the Ernest Hemingway House on Whitehead Street, spinning stories of the great writer's life and times, sharing flakes of Papa's life that he had collected during voracious study of everything he could get his hands on.
