Amman to Petra || Petra Walk Through || Wadi Musa
I wanted to explore PETRA by myself, so I began my journey from Amman, the capital city of Jordan to this ancient intriguing and once flourishing rocky red city. A bus ride from the capital is all it takes to reach Petra in only 4 hours.
I had never imagined the Middle East like this; I was always under the impression that it is a place where no vegetation grows and a place where life is difficult. What I was seeing was totally unique to me. I was in love!
What I was witnessing was a lush green place, a place with modern buildings and wide roads. The locals were polite and welcoming. What else does anyone need as a traveler? That’s much more than enough, really!
After 2 hours of journey, the bus stopped at this place that had aesthetic artefacts that had a glimpse of the cultural richness of Jordanians. I loved the fact that such places have been built on the way to PETRA to attract tourists.
After a couple of more hours, I was entering Wadi Musa, the closest place to PETRA. The image I had portrayed in my head was quite similar to what I was experiencing.
Soon enough, I was ready to explore PETRA. Petra lies on the slope of Jabal Al-Madbah in a basin among the mountains forming the eastern flank of the Arabah valley. Petra was possibly established in the 4th century BC as the capital of the Nabataean (a Bedouin tribe) Kingdom. During the Eastern Roman Empire, many churches were constructed; however, the city continuously declined leaving a handful of nomads there. The city remained unknown to the world until 1812 when it was rediscovered by a Swiss traveler (Johann Ludwig Burckhardt).
The city is accessible through a 1.2 km long gorge called Siq. The Nabataeans were skillful in harvesting rainwater, agriculture and stone carving. In the 1st century the famous structure, Al Khazneh was built. It was growing and prosperous city then, an estimated 20000 inhabitants were living here. It was the time when the kingdom became the client of the Roman Empire and later lost its independence to the Romans in 106 AD. After 363 earthquake destroyed many of Petra’s structures and new sea routes emerged, Petra lost its prominence. It has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1985. Petra is a symbol of Jordan.
There are many trails to take while hiking in PETRA, one of them is The High Place of Sacrifice Trail. The others are
• The Main Trail.
• The Treasury Viewpoint Trail.
• The Wadi Farasa Trail.
• The Monastery Trail. And
• Taking the Main Trail Back

Petra - Exploring the Amazing Rock City of Jordan
Petra, also known as the Lost City or the Red Rock City, is an ancient Nabatean holy city, carved into the rocks in southern Jordan. It’s an amazing place to see in the world and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Check out my Amman travel guide:
On Day 6 of our trip to Jordan, we woke up in the morning, had breakfast at our hotel, and continued on to the gates of Petra. The entrance ticket price of visiting Petra is 50 JD ($70.23), which is on the pricey side, but well worth it to visit this incredible city. Before going into the gates, I stopped on the outside and purchased a keffiyeh (4 JD ($5.62), the traditional Middle Eastern checkered cloth headdress. After that, I was ready to go and explore Petra!
When you see pictures of Petra, at least in my case, you can’t really tell how big it is, or the scale of it - it’s not just one building on tomb, but it’s an entire city, spread out through the red rocks of Petra, through canyons and valley and rock mountains. So it’s a huge site that can take a full day, or even many days (if you had the time) to explore. So rather than just going to see a single attractions, Petra is like walking into a historical amusement city, full of surprises, mountains to climb, and ancient tombs to explore. Just for a bit of history, Petra was built by the ancient Nabateans, likely somewhere around the 300 BC date range. The Nabateans were a nomadic Arabian tribe who were specialist in trade, especially across the Arabian desert. They would run camel caravans and trade to lands across the desert, and due to their incredible desert and sky skills, they could navigate the desert and not only survive, but thrive. They made a fortune trading frankincense and myrrh, and doing so, they made a fortune. Similar to the ancient Egyptians, when the Nabateans became very wealthy, they started to think more about their after-life, and so they decided to build tombs within the rocks of Petra. At first I was thinking that the sites of Petra were temples or houses, but the majority, especially the fancy ornate rock carving at Petra are all tombs. The city of Petra eventually became deserted, and it was hidden for about a thousand years, before being rediscovered by Swiss explorer Johann Ludwig Burckhardt in 1812.
After entering the Rock City, you first walk through a slot canyon, which was the main roadway leading directly into the center of Petra. You can either walk, or they also have horse chariots if you want to ride. One of the most famous tombs at Petra is known as the The Treasury (Al Khazneh), which was named so because some people believed there was treasure hidden high in the rock above it. The Treasury, also a tomb, is one of the best preserved and most incredible things to see when you visit Petra. The tombs are carved directly out of the side of the red rock mountains, and what’s really interesting is that the Nabateans were influenced by many different civilizations, as one can tell from the construction. The Treasury has lots of Greek influence, along with Arab and local Middle Eastern details as well. We continued hiking, and visiting many more of the tombs around Petra. Another famous place to see in the city is The Monastery (Ad Deir), which requires a hike that took about 45 minutes. The Monastery looks remarkably similar to the Treasury, but it’s just three times the size. There are some incredible views, and from The Monastery, you can do some more small hikes to get some wonderful views of the rugged mountain rocks.
For dinner we headed to a restaurant in town called Al Qantarah - a nice restaurant housed in a rock building. Along with some fantastic fresh fish, that the owner of the restaurant had caught himself, we also had a main dish of lamb and rice cooked in a claypot. The lamb was amazingly tender and the rice was fragrant. Dinner was the best way to end an incredible day tour exploring the fascinating city of Petra.

Stunning Stone Monuments of Petra | National Geographic
The “Rose City” is a honeycomb of hand-hewn caves, temples, and tombs carved from blushing pink sandstone in the high desert of Jordan some 2,000 years ago. Hidden by time and shifting sand, Petra tells of a lost civilization. Little is known about the Nabateans—a nomadic desert people whose kingdom rose up from these cliffs and peaks, and whose incredible wealth grew from the lucrative incense trade.

Petra Documentary: Lost City Of Stone - Documentary HD
Petra is a historical and archaeological city in the southern Jordanian governorate of Ma'an that is famous for its rock-cut architecture and water conduit system. Another name for Petra is the Rose City due to the color of the stone out of which it is carved.
Established possibly as early as 312 BCE as the capital city of the Nabataeans, it is a symbol of Jordan, as well as Jordan's most-visited tourist attraction. It lies on the slope of Jebel al-Madhbah (identified by some as the biblical Mount Hor in a basin among the mountains which form the eastern flank of Arabah (Wadi Araba), the large valley running from the Dead Sea to the Gulf of Aqaba. Petra has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1985.
The site remained unknown to the Western world until 1812, when it was introduced by Swiss explorer Johann Ludwig Burckhardt. It was described as a rose-red city half as old as time in a Newdigate Prize-winning poem by John William Burgon. UNESCO has described it as one of the most precious cultural properties of man's cultural heritage. Petra was named amongst the New7Wonders of the World in 2007 and was also chosen by the Smithsonian Magazine as one of the 28 Places to See Before You Die.
Some of the earliest recorded farmers settled in Beidha, a pre-pottery settlement just north of Petra, by 7000 BCE. Petra is listed in Egyptian campaign accounts and the Amarna letters as Pel, Sela or Seir. Stations 19 through 26 of the stations list of Exodus are places associated with Petra.
Josephus (Antiquities of the Jews iv. 7, 1 ~ 4, 7), Eusebius and Jerome (Onom. sacr. 286, 71. 145, 9; 228, 55. 287, 94) assert that Rekem was the native name, and this name appears in the Dead Sea Scrolls [15] as a prominent Edomite site most closely describing Petra, and associated with Mount Seir. In the Aramaic versions, Rekem is the name of Kadesh, implying that Josephus may have confused the two places. The Semitic name of the city, if not Sela, remains unknown. The passage in Diodorus Siculus which describes the expeditions which Antigonus sent against the Nabataeans in 312 BCE is understood to throw some light upon the history of Petra, but the petra referred to as a natural fortress and place of refuge can not be a proper name and the description implies that the town was not yet in existence.
The Rekem Inscription before it was buried by the bridge abutments.

WADI RUM & PETRA ● Jordan | 4k Ultra HD????

Wadi Rum & Petra | Jordan | 4k Ultra HD
Wadi Rum (Valley of the Moon) lies in the far south of Jordan, set on a high plateau at the western edge of the Arabian desert. Gargantuan rock formations, rippled sand dunes, and clear night skies create an almost fairy-tale setting across an unpopulated area the size of New York City. This is truly the “reddest” part of Jordan, colored by iron oxide, and by far the most dramatic in terms of landscape.
DEEP WITHIN JORDAN’S desolate desert canyons and rugged mountains lies an ancient treasure, the stone city of Petra. A UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the new seven wonders of the world, Petra is a giant metropolis of tombs, monuments, and other elaborate religious structures directly carved into sandstone cliffs. Believed to have been settled as early as 9000 B.C., Petra developed into the thriving capital of the Nabataean kingdom.

Petra
Inhabited since prehistoric times, this Nabataean caravan-city, situated between the Red Sea and the Dead Sea, was an important crossroads between Arabia, Egypt and Syria-Phoenicia. Petra is half-built, half-carved into the rock, and is surrounded by mountains riddled with passages and gorges. It is one of the world's most famous archaeological sites, where ancient Eastern traditions blend with Hellenistic architecture. More info:

Exploring The Lost City of PETRA - Lost Ancient Civilizations | Wadi Musa Jordan
It was great to visit one of the seven wonders of the world! a UNESCO World Heritage site....
The siq opens up onto Petra’s most magnificent façade; the Treasury, or Al Khazna. It is almost 40 meters high and intricately decorated with Corinthian capitals, friezes, figures and more. The Treasury is crowned by a funerary urn, which according to local legend conceals a pharaoh’s treasure. Although the original function is still a mystery, The Treasury was probably constructed in the 1st century BC, However, in reality the urn represented a memorial for royalty. The Treasury consists of two floors with a width of 25.30 meters and a height of 39.1 meters.
The purpose of the Treasury is unclear: some archaeologists believed it to be a temple, while others thought it was a place to store documents. However, the most recent excavation here has unearthed a graveyard beneath the Treasury.
The Treasury comprises three chambers, a middle chamber with one on either side, the elaborately carved facade represents the nabataean engineering genius
If you get tired, you can take a donkey or camel ride, but please take into account the animals welfare as they are treated as work animals and live roughly. The entrance fee to the park is 50 JD or roughly 70 USD. The top guide was an additional 50 JD. I opted for the guide. There are bathrooms in the main part of the park but no bathrooms once you start hiking up to the top of the mountains

Petra, the desert city of Jordan
Petra is an ancient city entirely carved in stone some 2300 years ago in Jordan. Petra has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1985 and in 2007 it was voted one of the New Seven Wonders of the World. Named “the rose red city” Petra is mainly about some great temples and tombs: The Treasury, The Siq, The Monastery, The Roman Theater.
We walked 40 km in 2 daysbut managed to see all the beautiful and well preserved monuments. This place is truly amazing and would recommend it to any traveler out there. Don’t miss your chance of adding it to your Bucket List.

Little Petra World Heritage site in Jordan is less well known than Petra but is well worth visiting.
Little Petra archaeological site in Jordan is less well known than Petra. It's smaller and less elaborate. There are fewer tourists, is quieter and you can therefore gain a better feeling of what life might have been like when the Nabataean's built it in the first century.
